Rajá – Colecção Espacial

Miniatures of human and alien figures constituting the series "Colecção Espacial". This series of 16 miniatures appears in 1970 associated with the Rajá ice cream brand, which offers a figurine on each ice cream purchased. Monochrome plastic, various colors. Although the figurines themselves do not have movable or removable parts, two of them, offered separately, can be fitted together – the Capitão Roskoff and his Disco Volante. The height of the figurines varies between approximately 0.9 and 1.4 in. About 0.1 to 0.2 oz. These miniatures depict a group of astronauts, aliens and a smiling robot. A small flying vehicle used by one of the astronauts is also included. Two characters of the series are also available in larger sized figures. These figures are hollow, made in plastic ("ultratene", ultrathene) and with painted details. Kids need to find an ice cream stick showing the word "Brinde" (gift or premium) and then trade it at the vendor for one of these colorful figures. 

A space station in which to accommodate the monochrome figurines is also available. I was a child then and I don’t precisely remember how we could get it. This doughnut-shaped object is made of two parts, the lower part in colored plastic and the upper part or dome in transparent plastic. The two parts fit together using small pins – which are, as you would expect, easily broken. The crew can be placed inside the space station also using small pins – hence the correspondent hole in the base of each miniature. As far as I can remember, this was not a very popular toy and as soon as it got scratched or damaged beyond repair it was peacefully tucked away and forgotten. My space station was destroyed after a collision and fatal crash on the planet Kitchen, known for its hard and unforgiving surface. Hostile territory. The crew ejected – all over the place – and survived, being eventually rescued by a robust spaceship made of Lego bricks. 

Under the base or feet or on the back of the monochrome figurines, we find the character's name in capital letters and the Rajá logo. As a note of interest, 10 of these figurines reappear in 1975, in Peru, constituting the series "Los Galáxicos" associated with the chocolate powder brand Nescao. Apparently, the 16 figurines from the original series reappear in the early 1980s in Brazil, associated with the snack food brand Elma Chips, but so far I do not have any documents, especially contemporary advertisements, to confirm this. In 1983, 7 figurines appear in the United States, associated with the popcorn brand Screaming Yellow Zonkers. These figurines are about 26% larger than the originals and now have a base – in the Rajá series only six have this feature. The Screaming Yellow Zonkers "Space Creatures" series brings together the original Pisca Pisca, Yopy, Bip Bip, Poty Poty, Dr. Brown, Zuka and Paf Paf, and a new alien figurine, half turtle, half lobster. This series is complemented by an original plastic cup in the shape of a spaceship, the "Creature Shuttle SYZ", used by the extraterrestrials. There are indications of more reissues in other countries.

These figurines, of excellent quality at various levels and in perfect harmony with their time, do not appear to be associated with any comics or tv cartoons – all the clues indicate that they are characters with strictly promotional purposes created within Rajá itself in the late 1960s. Their authorship is apparently unknown, but several clues from the ongoing investigation seem to converge to a name – to be confirmed. As for the manufacture of these plastic figurines, it is attributed to Tito, from Tito Basto, a name later associated in Spain with the manufacture of numerous promotional items for brands such as Dunkin, Walt Disney or Coca-Cola. Necessary corrections or additions to the above are welcome. Esta série de 16 miniaturas aparece em 1970 associada à marca de gelados Rajá, que oferece uma figurinha em cada gelado comprado. Plástico monocromático, diversas cores. Ainda que as figurinhas propriamente ditas não possuam peças móveis ou amovíveis, duas delas, oferecidas em separado, podem ser encaixadas entre si – o Capitão Roskoff e o seu Disco Volante. A altura das figurinhas varia entre aproximadamente 22 e 36 mm. Cerca de 2 a 6 g. Estas miniaturas de figuras humanas e alienígenas constituindo a série "Colecção Espacial" representam um grupo de astronautas, alienígenas e um robot sorridente. Um pequeno veículo voador usado por um dos astronautas também está incluído. Dois personagens da série também estão disponíveis em figuras de tamanho maior. Estas figuras são ocas, feitas em plástico ("ultratene", ultrateno) com detalhes pintados. As crianças precisam de encontrar um pauzinho de gelado mostrando a palavra "Brinde" e trocá-lo no vendedor por uma destas figuras coloridas.

Uma estação espacial para acomodar as figurinhas monocromáticas também está disponível. Nessa altura era criança e não me lembro exactamente de como a podíamos conseguir. Este objecto em forma de doughnut é feito de duas partes, a parte inferior em plástico colorido e a parte superior ou cúpula em plástico transparente. As duas partes encaixam-se por meio de pequenos pinos – que são, como seria de esperar, facilmente partidos. A tripulação pode ser colocada dentro da estação espacial também por meio de pequenos pinos, daí o orifício correspondente na base de cada miniatura. Tanto quanto me lembro, este não era um brinquedo muito popular e assim que ficava riscado ou danificado sem possibilidade de reparação era pacificamente guardado e esquecido. A minha estação espacial foi destruída após uma colisão e despenhamento fatal no planeta Cozinha, conhecido pela sua superfície dura e inclemente. Um território hostil. A tripulação ejectou-se – por todo o lado – e sobreviveu, sendo eventualmente resgatada por uma robusta nave espacial feita de peças de Lego. 

Sob a base ou pés ou nas costas das figurinhas monocromáticas encontramos o nome do personagem em letras maiúsculas e o logótipo da Rajá. Como nota de interesse, 10 destas figurinhas reaparecem em 1975, no Perú, constituindo a série "Los Galáxicos" associada à marca de chocolate em pó Nescao. Aparentemente, as 16 figurinhas da série original reaparecem no início dos anos 80 no Brasil associadas à marca de aperitivos Elma Chips, mas até ao momento não possuo quaisquer documentos, sobretudo anúncios contemporâneos, que o confirmem. Em 1983, surgem nos Estados Unidos 7 figurinhas, associadas à marca de pipocas Screaming Yellow Zonkers. Estas figurinhas são cerca de 26% maiores do que as originais e passam a dispor de uma base – na série da Rajá apenas seis possuem esta característica. A série Screaming Yellow Zonkers "Space Creatures" reúne as figurinhas originais Pisca Pisca, Yopy, Bip Bip, Poty Poty, Dr. Brown, Zuka e Paf Paf, e uma nova figurinha alienígena, meia tartaruga, meia lagosta. Esta série é complementada por uma original chávena de plástico em forma de nave espacial, a "Creature Shuttle SYZ", utilizada pelos extraterrestres. Existem indícios de mais reedições em outros países.

Estas figurinhas, de excelente qualidade a vários níveis e em perfeita sintonia com a sua época, não parecem estar associadas a nenhuma banda desenhada ou a desenhos animados – todas as pistas indicam que são personagens com fins estritamente promocionais criados no seio da própria Rajá no final dos anos sessenta. A autoria é aparentemente desconhecida, mas diversas pistas da investigação em curso parecem convergir para um nome – a confirmar. Quanto ao fabrico das figurinhas em plástico, é atribuído à Tito, de Tito Basto, nome posteriormente associado em Espanha ao fabrico de numerosos artigos promocionais para marcas como a Dunkin, a Walt Disney ou a Coca-Cola. Devidas correcções ou adições ao acima descrito são bem-vindas. Screaming Yellow Zonkers "Space Creatures" series

Released in 1983 and associated with the Screaming Yellow Zonkers brand, the series "Space Creatures" comprises 8 figurines in monochrome plastic. I don't know if the original names are kept in this American series. ● Lançada em 1983 e associada à marca Screaming Yellow Zonkers, a série "Space Creatures" compreende 8 figurinhas em plástico monocromático. Cleaning these little things

Soap, warm water and a toothbrush is all that I need to clean these plastic figurines. If necessary, toothpaste can help remove some ink marks, especially those left by felt-tip pens. Most of these plastic figurines are now fifty years old and I do not advise the use of aggressive cleaning solutions, such as bleach. ● Sabão, água morna e uma escova de dentes é tudo o que preciso para limpar estas figurinhas de plástico. Se necessário, a pasta dentífrica pode ajudar a remover algumas marcas de tinta, sobretudo as deixadas por canetas de feltro. A maioria destas figurinhas de plástico tem agora cinquenta anos e não aconselho o uso de soluções de limpeza agressivas, como a lixívia.
