Matchbox – Wild Life Truck
Scale model of a pickup truck, the Wild Life Truck, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 57, included in the "1–75 Superfast" series. It is made in England, between 1973 and 1980. Metal body painted in yellow, decorated with a sticker on the hood, orange background, showing an elephant's head and the inscription "RANGER". Metal base, unpainted. Cab windows represented in transparent red tinted plastic; cargo bed cover (canopy) in black tinted plastic. No interior details in the cab. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. Thanks to the "Rola-matics" system ¹, the vehicle's forward or backward movement transmits a circular motion to the lion figure on the cargo bed. Removable cargo bed cover. License plate "KB-896". The nominal scale seems to be 1:65 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 1.6 oz. This model represents a pickup truck, the 1967 Ford F-100 Styleside Shortbed, possibly equipped with the 240 cu in (3929 cm³), 150 hp (112 kW) Ford 240 "L6" engine ².
I believe that even in the seventies, the idea of carrying a nervous lion in a small pickup truck, inside a transparent canopy, would have been considered delusional. However, this Wild Life Truck captivated children's imaginations for almost a decade, remaining in the catalog between 1973 and 1980, with a final variant in 1981. Based on a Ford pickup truck, presumably the F-100 Styleside Shortbed, the miniature offered by Matchbox is quite appealing. The casting is of good quality, robust, well-proportioned and detailed—the lack of the "FORD" inscription on the hood is compensated by its expressive and accurate representation on the tailgate. The unpainted metal base extends forward to form the bumper, grille, headlights and turn signals. The application of the yellow paint is reasonable (yellow is always demanding) and displays a pleasant glossy finish. As was sometimes the case with various manufacturers, especially in pickup trucks and trucks, there are no details in the interior of the cab, a fact usually disguised by tinted windows, in this case with a dense red tint. The wheels are robust and roll well. In terms of play value, the "Rola-matics" system, where the vehicle's forward or backward movement transmits a circular motion to the lion figure in the cargo bed, must have been extremely captivating for children. Furthermore, they could remove the canopy and see the fierce lion up close! As a kid, I played with this Wild Life Truck and I can assure you that its missions were sometimes risky, but always worthwhile—in fact, the lion was always taken to the clinic for the necessary examinations and treatments, and later returned to the African savanna. ●

Creio que mesmo nos anos setenta, a ideia de transportar um leão nervoso numa pequena camioneta, dentro de uma redoma transparente, seria tida como delirante. Todavia, este Wild Life Truck cativou a imaginação das crianças ao longo de quase uma década, permanecendo no catálogo entre 1973 e 1980, com uma derradeira variante em 1981. Baseada numa camioneta Ford, presumivelmente a F-100 Styleside Shortbed, a miniatura proposta pela Matchbox é bastante apelativa. O molde é de boa qualidade, robusto, bem proporcionado e detalhado—a falta da inscrição "FORD" no capot é compensada pela sua expressiva e correcta representação na porta da caixa de carga. A base em metal, sem pintura, prolonga-se para a frente para formar o pára-choques, a grelha, os faróis e piscas. A aplicação da pintura amarela é razoável (o amarelo é sempre exigente) e exibe um agradável acabamento brilhante. Como acontecia por vezes com diversos fabricantes, sobretudo nas camionetas e camiões, não há detalhes no interior da cabina, facto normalmente dissimulado por vidros fumados, neste caso com densa tonalidade vermelha. As rodas são robustas e rodam bem. Em termos de valor lúdico, o sistema "Rola-matics", onde o avanço ou recuo do veículo transmite à figura do leão na caixa de carga um movimento circular, deve ter sido extremante cativante para as crianças. Para mais, podiam remover a redoma e ver o feroz leão de perto! Em miúdo, brinquei com esta Wild Life Truck e posso garantir que as suas missões eram por vezes arriscadas, mas sempre meritórias—de facto, o leão era sempre encaminhado para a clínica, para os devidos exames e tratamentos, e posteriormente devolvido à savana africana. ●
¹ The "Rola-matics" system is activated by a small pin (or hemispherical tab) molded into the left rear wheel. Perhaps to make better use of this mold, the front right wheel also has a pin, although without interaction with the mechanism. ● O sistema "Rola-matics" é accionado por um pequeno pino (ou patilha semiesférica) moldada na roda traseira do lado esquerdo.
