Tomica – Greyhound Bus MC-8
Scale model of a bus, the Greyhound Bus MC-8, made by Tomica. This example is reference F49, included in the "Tomica Foreign" series. It is made in Japan, introduced in 1979. Metal body painted in metallic gray, with paper stickers on the sides, decorated in blue, white and red, including the inscriptions "AMERICRUISER" and "GREYHOUND®", as well as the traditional figure of a running greyhound; white plastic roof, with a plastic sticker, harmonizing with the decoration on the sides. Base in black plastic. Glazing represented in green tinted transparent plastic with molded details. Interior details are formed as part of the window molding, in transparent plastic with a green tint; at the ends, they are formed as part of the body molding, in metal. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (1H). No suspension. License plate "GB49". The nominal scale is 1:156 and the overall length is approximately 3.1 in. About 1.5 oz. This model represents a long-distance bus (or coach), operated by Greyhound Lines on intercity services across the United States, the Motor Coach Industries MC-8, introduced in 1973, equipped with the 9.3 L, 285 hp (212,5 kW) Detroit Diesel 8V71 "V8" engine.
By the late seventies, I already had several model buses and toys representing American buses in my garage. My favorites were the GM PD-4501 Scenicruiser and the New Look "Fishbowl". So, when I saw this appealing MCI M-C8 Americruiser arrive at the toy store, I almost immediately asked for it to be "added to the fleet," as usual in exchange for the guarantee of good grades at school. And this Greyhound Bus MC-8, introduced by Tomica in 1979, did not disappoint. The casting is of excellent quality and very well finished. Of course, it shows compromises—the 40 ft length is properly reduced to the 1:156 scale, but Tomica's "huge" 1H standard wheels force the bus's belly to shrink, even losing two luggage compartment lids. Still, the proportions are harmonious and the stance is almost unscathed. For all intents and purposes, the casting skillfully reproduces the stainless steel ribbed panels, punctuated by interesting details such as the various trim pieces or the safety lights on the sides. Another compromise is the skillful representation of the windshield, windows, and pillars in a single element of greenish-smoked plastic, which also provides some of the interior details. At the extremities, the interior details are molded into the metal element that forms the body. The white plastic roof is well molded and attached to the body by means of two pillars, concealed by the tinted windows. The paint is well applied and durable. In my example, the well-printed paper and plastic stickers withstood long hours of play. The plastic base, with some details, covers the three axles. Even without suspension, the wheels roll well. As with other bus models, here too the play value depended essentially on the children's imagination and their ability to create interesting services. In my case, I used to imagine this Greyhound bus, like in the movies, plying the long American roads, with the passengers almost asleep at the end of the day, lulled by the sound of the diesel engine. So close, after all, to reality. ●

Este modelo representa um autocarro de longo curso, operado pela Greyhound Lines em serviços intercidades pelos Estados Unidos, o Motor Coach Industries MC-8, equipado com o motor Detroit Diesel 8V71 "V8" de 9.3 L e 285 hp (212,5 kW).
No final dos anos setenta, já tinha na minha garagem diversos modelos e brinquedos representando autocarros americanos. Os meus favoritos eram os GM PD-4501 Scenicruiser e New Look "Fishbowl". Por isso, quando vi chegar à loja de brinquedos este apelativo MCI M-C8 Americruiser, pedi quase de imediato a sua "incorporação na frota", como habitualmente a troco da garantia de boas notas na escola. E este Greyhound Bus MC-8, introduzido pela Tomica em 1979, não me desiludiu. O molde é de excelente qualidade e muito bem acabado. Claro que evidencia compromissos—o comprimento de 12,19 m é devidamente reduzido à escala de 1:156, mas as "enormes" rodas padrão da Tomica obrigam a encolher a barriga do autocarro, perdendo mesmo duas tampas da bagageira. Ainda assim, as proporções resultam harmoniosas e a postura escapa quase ilesa. Para todos os efeitos, o molde reproduz habilmente os painéis canelados em aço inox, pontuados por interessantes detalhes, como os diversos frisos ou as luzes de segurança nas laterais. Outro compromisso é a hábil representação do pára-brisas, janelas e pilares num único elemento em plástico fumado esverdeado, que também assegura parte dos detalhes interiores. Nos extremos, os detalhes interiores são moldados no elemento em metal que forma a carroçaria. O tejadilho em plástico branco é bem moldado e fixado à carroçaria por meio de dois pilares, dissimulados pelos vidros fumados. A pintura é bem aplicada e resistente. No meu exemplar, os autocolantes em papel e plástico, bem impressos, resistiram a longas horas de brincadeira. A base em plástico, com alguns detalhes, cobre os três eixos. Mesmo sem suspensão, as rodas rolam bem. Tal como noutros modelos de autocarros, também aqui o valor lúdico dependia essencialmente da imaginação dos miúdos e da sua capacidade para criarem interessantes serviços. No meu caso, costumava imaginar este autocarro da Greyhound, tal como nos filmes, a percorrer as longas estradas americanas, com os passageiros quase a adormecer ao fim do dia, embalados pela voz do motor diesel. Tão perto, afinal, da realidade. ●
