Tomica – London Bus
Scale model of a double-deck bus, the London Bus, made by Tomica. This example is reference F15, included in the "Tomica Foreign" series. It is made in Japan, introduced in 1977. Metal body painted in red, with paper stickers placed on the sides, including the inscription "£ 1/2 million VERNONS". Red plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in white plastic on the lower floor and transparent plastic on the upper floor. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (1H). With suspension. The nominal scale is 1:130 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 2 oz. This model represents a double-deck bus used in urban services, a Daimler Fleetline, introduced in 1960. Although identified as a London bus, some aspects of its configuration remind me of versions bodied by Metal Sections, intended for the Asian market—but I might be completely mistaken.
When I saw this model arrive at the toy store, I was thrilled—finally a bus that looked like the ones I knew! It's true that it came in red and had the doors and steering wheel on the wrong side, but that hardly mattered. In this London Bus, released by Tomica in 1977 and presumably based on the Daimler Fleetline, the proportions and stance are adequate. The casting is excellent and shows all the main details, including the finely reproduced double and four-leaf doors, as well as the ventilators and sections in the roof. The paintwork, perhaps a little thick, is well applied, and the decorative paper labels are of good quality. The plastic base reveals some details. At the front, the flap that fits into the body is used to simulate the license plate; at the rear, the base ingeniously extends to form the engine compartment (including the bumper and tail lights), as well as the rear windows (without "glazing"). The interior is reasonably detailed, despite the transparent seats upstairs. The good quality suspension and the well-molded and detailed wheels roll flawlessly. In this model, there are compromises, but all reasonable, and the end result is a quite attractive model. As with almost all buses in the "3-inches" world, there are no parts that open—the play value resided mainly in the children's imagination. In my case, it allowed me to do some public service on the streets of Lisbon, duly imagined on the carpet. Fortunately, I resisted the temptation to paint this charming London Bus in the Carris color schemes! ●

Quando vi chegar este modelo à loja de brinquedos, fiquei entusiasmado—finalmente um autocarro parecido com aqueles que eu conhecia! É certo que vinha em vermelho e tinha as portas e o volante do lado errado, mas isso pouco importava. Neste London Bus, lançado pela Tomica em 1977 e presumivelmente baseado no Daimler Fleetline, as proporções e a postura são adequadas. O molde é excelente e mostra os todos os principais detalhes, incluindo as portas de duas e quatro folhas, finamente reproduzidas, assim como os ventiladores e secções no tejadilho. A pintura, é talvez algo espessa, mas bem aplicada, e as etiquetas decorativas de papel são de boa qualidade. A base em plástico mostra alguns detalhes. Na frente, a aba que encaixa na carroçaria é aproveitada para simular a matrícula; na retaguarda, a base prolonga-se engenhosamente para formar o compartimento do motor (incluindo o pára-choques e as luzes), assim como as janelas traseiras (sem "vidros"). O interior é razoavelmente detalhado, apesar dos assentos transparentes no piso superior. A suspensão de boa qualidade e as rodas, bem moldadas e detalhadas, rolam impecavelmente. Neste modelo, existem compromissos, mas todos razoáveis e o resultado final é um modelo bastante apelativo. Como em quase todos os autocarros no mundo dos "3-polegadas", não existem peças de abrir—o valor lúdico residia sobretudo na imaginação das crianças. No meu caso, permitiu-me efectuar alguns serviços públicos nas ruas de Lisboa, devidamente imaginadas sobre a carpete. Felizmente, resisti à tentação de pintar este encantador London Bus nos esquemas de cores da Carris! ●
