Poliguri – Mercedes Unimog
Scale model of an off-road vehicle, the Mercedes Unimog, made by Poliguri. This example is reference 701, included in the "Guri Car" series. It is made in Portugal, possibly between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s. Metal cab and cargo bed painted in green. Metal base painted in black. Glazing represented in transparent plastic, with details such as the windshield wipers and the rear-view mirror molded on the windshield. Two rotating beacons in transparent plastic. Interior details in white plastic. Plastic wheels (R16T) with printed details in white suggesting the rims, white line printed on the tire wall cut twice by the word "Guri". No suspension. Tow hitch. The nominal scale is 1:55 and the overall length is approximately 2.9 in. About 2.4 oz. This model represents an off-road vehicle, possibly based on the 1963 Unimog 406 (U65 ¹, "65" denoting the power output in PS), with a gross weight of 2650 kg (5840 lb) and equipped with the 4580 cm³, 48 kW (65 hp) Mercedes-Benz OM 312.954 engine. It could reach a top speed of around 40 mph.
This Mercedes Unimog, made by Poliguri, based in Cacém, near Lisboa, is a very appealing model. It comes with a fairly detailed chassis and robust axles. The quality of the paint job depends on the color used and the finish varies between satin, in the yellow examples, and glossy, in the green ones. Yellow paint is sometimes thinly applied. This model ages well, but on played examples, sometimes, the rearview mirrors and "snorkel" are either broken or missing. I have seen some transformations of this model for military or fire-fighting functions. Some of these transformations carried out by enthusiasts are quite elaborate and of excellent quality, but their value is, in my opinion, very subjective. The Mercedes Unimog has a tow hitch that allows it to specifically tow the high coupler trailer. In the "Guri Kit" series, the Mercedes Unimog is shown in the catalog as part of references 700 G and 700 O. As part of reference 700 O, it comes with a trailer. ●

É feito em Portugal, possivelmente entre o final dos anos oitenta e meados dos anos noventa. Cabina e caixa de carga em metal pintadas em verde. Base em metal pintada em preto. Vidros representados em plástico transparente com detalhes como os limpa pára-brisas e o espelho retrovisor moldados no pára-brisas. Dois rotativos em plástico transparente. Detalhes interiores em plástico branco. Rodas em plástico (R16T) com detalhes impressos em branco a sugerir as jantes, linha branca impressa na parede do pneu cortada duas vezes pela palavra "Guri". Sem suspensão. A escala nominal é 1:55 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 74 mm. Cerca de 67 g. Este modelo representa um veículo todo-o-terreno, possivelmente baseado no Unimog 406 (U65 ¹, "65" a denotar a potencia em PS) de 1963, com um peso bruto 2650 kg (5840 lb) e equipado com o motor Mercedes-Benz OM 312.954 de 4580 cm³, 48 kW (65 hp). Podia atingir uma velocidade máxima de cerca de 65 km/h.
Este Mercedes Unimog, feito pela Poliguri, baseada no Cacém, perto de Lisboa, é um modelo bastante apelativo. Vem com um chassis razoavelmente detalhado e com eixos robustos. A qualidade da pintura depende da cor utilizada e o acabamento varia entre o acetinado, nos exemplares em amarelo, e o brilhante, nos exemplares em verde. A tinta amarela é por vezes aplicada com pouca espessura. Este modelo envelhece bem, mas em exemplares brincados, por vezes, os espelhos retrovisores e o "snorkel" estão ou partidos ou em falta. Tenho visto algumas transformações deste modelo para funções militares ou de combate a incêndios. Algumas dessas transformações realizadas por entusiastas são bastante elaboradas e de excelente qualidade, mas o seu valor é, em minha opinião, muito subjectivo. O Mercedes Unimog possui um dispositivo de reboque que lhe permite rebocar especificamente o atrelado de engate alto. Na série "Guri Kit", o Mercedes Unimog é mostrado no catálogo como parte das referências 700 G e 700 O. Como parte da referência 700 O, vem com um atrelado. ●

Versions and color variants
Color variants that I know are yellow and green. A few yellow examples exhibit an orangey shade and some collectors consider these the "orange" variant. I have seen reference 701 only with white interiors. Always fitted with R16T wheels. Necessary corrections or additions to the above are welcome. ●

How much?
Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case, I will pay up to €12 for a Mercedes Unimog by Poliguri, loose and in good condition, or up to €20 if boxed and in perfect condition. ●

Born to enchant and endure—"Mog" from Poliguri!
Despite the obvious liberties taken with proportions and details, Poliguri's robust "Mog" exemplarily preserves the "character" of the nearly indestructible Unimog 406. ●

Broken Heart
A few years ago, in North Africa, I spotted a Unimog in a desert area, clearly abandoned. I approached and observed it for a long time. Suddenly, I felt the air grow cold around me, a chill that shook my whole body. I literally felt a tightness in my heart, a deep sadness. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me. The next day, I returned to the same spot—but the Unimog had disappeared. There weren't even any tracks or other traces that any vehicle had ever been there. Strange. Back in the village where I was staying, I told the locals what had happened, but no one wanted to comment. A few days later, one of the residents broke the silence and agreed to tell me the story, on the promise that I wouldn't share it with anyone else. As I listened to the story, I understood the profound sadness I had felt. Later, back in Portugal, I found a miniature Unimog that unusually replicated the state of the one I had seen. True to my promise not to share the story with anyone else, I decided to at least reproduce in miniature the scene I witnessed. I therefore leave it to your imagination to find a suitable story in this image. As for me, all has remained calm. It seems the spirits understood and accepted my audacity. ●
Il y a quelques années, en Afrique du Nord, j'ai aperçu un Unimog dans une zone désertique, manifestement abandonné. Je m'en suis approché et l'ai observé longuement. Soudain, j'ai senti l'air se refroidir autour de moi, un frisson me parcourant tout le corps. J'ai littéralement ressenti un serrement au cœur, une profonde tristesse. Malheureusement, je n'avais pas mon appareil photo sur moi. Le lendemain, je suis retourné au même endroit, mais l'Unimog avait disparu. Il n'y avait ni traces de pneus ni aucune autre marque indiquant qu'un véhicule s'était trouvé là. Étrange. De retour au village où je séjournais, j'ai raconté ce qui s'était passé aux habitants, mais personne n'a voulu faire de commentaire. Quelques jours plus tard, l'un des résidents a rompu le silence et a accepté de me raconter l'histoire, à condition que je ne la partage avec personne d'autre. En écoutant ce récit, j'ai compris la profonde tristesse que j'avais ressentie. Plus tard, de retour au Portugal, j'ai trouvé une miniature d'Unimog qui reproduisait fidèlement, et de manière assez singulière, l'état de celui que j'avais vu. Fidèle à ma promesse de ne raconter cette histoire à personne, j'ai décidé de reproduire au moins en miniature la scène dont j'avais été témoin. Je laisse donc libre cours à votre imagination pour inventer une histoire adaptée à cette image. Quant à moi, tout est resté calme. Il semble que les esprits aient compris et accepté mon audace. ●
Há alguns anos, no Norte de África, avistei numa zona desértica um Unimog, decerto abandonado. Aproximei-me e observei-o demoradamente. Subitamente, senti o ar arrefecer à minha volta, um calafrio que estremeceu todo o meu corpo. Senti literalmente um aperto no coração, uma tristeza profunda. Infelizmente, não trazia comigo a máquina fotográfica. No dia seguinte, voltei ao mesmo local—mas o Unimog havia desaparecido. Não havia sequer rastos ou quaisquer outros vestígios de que alguma vez ali tivesse estado um veículo. Estranho. De regresso à povoação onde me encontrava falei aos locais do sucedido, mas ninguém quis comentar o assunto. Uns dias depois, um dos locais quebrou o silêncio e aceitou contar-me a história, sob promessa de eu não a partilhar com mais ninguém. Enquanto ouvia a história, compreendi a profunda tristeza que havia sentido. Mais tarde, já em Portugal, encontrei um Unimog em miniatura que insolitamente reproduzia o estado daquele que eu havia visto. Fiel à minha promessa de não partilhar a história com mais ninguém, decidi pelo menos reproduzir em miniatura a cena que testemunhei. Deixo, pois, que a vossa imaginação encontre nesta imagem uma história adequada. Quanto a mim, tudo tem permanecido tranquilo. Parece que os espíritos compreenderam e aceitaram a minha ousadia. ●
