Tomica – Morgan Plus 8

Metal body painted in red, including fenders and running boards. Rear-mounted spare tire. Metal base, unpainted. Windshield represented entirely in transparent plastic. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (1H). With suspension. License plate "TF 26". The nominal scale is 1:57 and the overall length is approximately 2.7 in. About 1.2 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1968 Morgan Plus 8 roadster, equipped with the 215.5 cu in (3532 cm³), 168 hp (125 kW) Rover "V8" engine (derived from the Buick Fireball 215). Top speed around 131 mph.
Even as a kid I knew the almost legendary aura of Morgans, especially the 4/4 and Plus 8, handcrafted sports cars whose customers, after ordering them, had to resign themselves to several years on the waiting list. So when I saw a Morgan Plus 8 in the window of a toy store in downtown Lisboa, I didn’t hesitate – within minutes I was the proud owner of a beautiful red example. At that time, I already had a fair number of British classics in my garage – tiny ones, naturally – and this icon was a key addition. The proportions and casting are excellent, as is the glossy red paint job. The interior is well detailed and even reproduces the characteristic dashboard. The suspension is excellent – and way softer than that of the original car. As a kid, I came across a few Morgans and even had the opportunity to ride in two of them (as a passenger, of course) and at home, on the carpet, I tried to recreate those moments of stimulating escape and freedom. I was already beginning to understand that certain cars do not win us over with their appearance or comfort, but with their performance and visceral complicity, even with their defects. With their glorious defects. Good times. ●

Já em miúdo conhecia a aura quase lendária dos Morgan, em particular dos 4/4 e Plus 8, automóveis desportivos fabricados artesanalmente e cujos clientes, depois de os encomendarem, tinham de se resignar a vários anos em lista de espera. Assim, quando vi um Morgan Plus 8 na montra de uma loja de brinquedos na baixa de Lisboa, não hesitei – em poucos minutos era o orgulhoso proprietário de um belíssimo exemplar em vermelho. Nessa altura, tinha já um bom número de clássicos britânicos na minha garagem – pequeninos, naturalmente – e este ícone era uma adição fundamental. As proporções e o molde são excelentes, assim como a pintura em vermelho brilhante. O interior é bem detalhado e reproduz até o característico tablier. A suspensão é excelente – e bem mais suave que a do carro original. Em miúdo, cruzei-me com alguns Morgan e tive até a oportunidade de andar em dois deles (à boleia, evidentemente) e em casa, sobre o tapete, procurava reproduzir esses momentos de estimulante evasão e liberdade. Já aí começava a compreender que certos carros não nos conquistam pela aparência ou pelo conforto, mas sim pelo desempenho e pela visceral cumplicidade, até pelos seus defeitos. Pelos seus gloriosos defeitos. Bons momentos. ●
