Hot Wheels – '62 Chevy
Scale model of an automobile in the "hot rod" style, the '62 Chevy (also, '62 Chevy "409" Bubble Top), made by Hot Wheels. This example is reference 36, included in the "2008 All Stars" series. It is made in Malaysia. Metal body painted in metallic dark green, with white longitudinal stripe on the sides. "Chrome" plastic base. Glazing represented in black tinted transparent plastic. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (PR5). No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:64 and the overall length is approximately 3.3 in. About 1.5 oz. This model, the '62 Chevy, represents an automobile in the "hot rod" style based on the 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe possibly equipped with the Chevrolet Turbo-Fire 409 cu in (6.7 L) "V8" engine, developing around 305 kW (409 hp).
Even though I appreciate hot rods with amazing flaming decorations, I prefer the more discreet, almost inconspicuous ones, the ones that some enthusiasts call "sleepers". Peaceful, well-behaved creatures, until they feel the visceral appeal of a deserted road tearing through the plain – at dusk, preferably. I therefore like this '62 Chevy. The casting is of good quality and well finished, the proportions seem appropriate and the distinctive arches of the pillars, duly harmonized with the windows, are well achieved. The aggressive front and rear with the characteristic well-defined lights are highlighted by the massive "chrome" bumpers. The metallic paint is well applied and makes me forget the slight imperfections of the long wedge-shaped side stripes. Finally, as I place this little car on the table to photograph it, I admire its stance, wait for it to turn on the lights, and can almost hear the raspy, burbling voice of the ferocious 409-horsepower engine under the hood. Mission accomplished, Hot Wheels. ●

Este modelo, o '62 Chevy, representa um automóvel em estilo "hot rod" baseado no Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe coupe de 1962, possivelmente equipado com o motor Chevrolet "V8" Turbo-Fire de 409 cu in (6.7 L), produzindo cerca de 305 kW (409 hp).
Ainda que aprecie "hot rods" com espantosas decorações flamejantes, prefiro aqueles mais discretos, quase insuspeitos, aqueles a que alguns entusiastas apelidam de "sleepers". Criaturas pacatas e bem comportadas, até sentirem o apelo visceral de uma estrada deserta a rasgar a planície – ao anoitecer, de preferência. Gosto, pois, deste '62 Chevy. O molde é de boa qualidade e bem acabado, as proporções parecem adequadas e as distintivas arqueações dos pilares, devidamente harmonizadas com os vidros, estão bem conseguidas. A frente agressiva e a traseira com as características luzes bem definidas, são sublinhadas pelos massivos pára-choques "cromados". A pintura metalizada é bem aplicada e faz-me esquecer as ligeiras imperfeiçoes das longas listas laterais em cunha. Por fim, ao colocar este carrinho sobre a mesa para o fotografar, admiro-lhe a postura, aguardo que acenda as luzes e quase que consigo ouvir a voz rouca e borbulhante do feroz motor de 409 cavalos sob o capot. Missão cumprida, Hot Wheels. ●

How much?
Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case and in Portugal, I will pay up to €3 for a '62 Chevy by Hot Wheels, loose and in good condition, or up to €5 if boxed and in perfect condition.
