Hot Wheels – '70 Pontiac GTO Judge

Scale model of an automobile, the '70 Pontiac GTO Judge, made by Hot Wheels. This example is reference 11, included in the "2011 New Models" series. It is made in Malaysia. Metal body painted in metallic orangey yellow, with printed details including the distinctive stripes over the wheel wells and "The Judge" and "Ram Air IV" signatures. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in black tinted transparent plastic. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (5SP). No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:65 and the overall length is approximately 3.1 in. About 1.3 oz. This model represents an automobile, the 1970 Pontiac GTO 2-door Hardtop Coupe with "Ram Air IV" and "The Judge" options, possibly equipped with the 400 cu in (6.6 L), 370 hp (276 kW) Pontiac "V8". "The Judge" was an options package available for Pontiac GTO models in 1969–1971. As a note of interest, the title "The Judge" was appropriated from a comedic sketch, "Here Comes the Judge", in Rowan & Martin's "Laugh-In" American tv show, that ran from 1968 to 1973 on the NBC television network.

The idea that in 1969 Pontiac decided to call its exuberant "muscle car", "The Judge", may seem surprising. But after a year earlier Plymouth called one of the most spartan and aggressive representatives of the breed, the "Road Runner", after a popular cartoon character and with a horn to match ("beep, beep!"), anything seemed possible. The late sixties were indeed a special period. In this model, Hot Wheels wins us over from the start by evoking one of the original paint schemes (Pontiac "Orbit Orange" with blue, pink and orange side stripes) and applying perfectly legible "Ram Air IV" and "The Judge" signatures. Properly accented door handles are an unexpected treat – it's a shame that the headlights and rear bumpers don't receive the same attention, as they do on the GTO convertible version. The casting is good quality and reasonably finished and the proportions seem correct. The front is well defined, as is the (remarkably robust) wing to the rear. The tinted windows contrast with the paintwork and finally, in the black plastic interior, there’s even the "stick on the floor". On the hood, perhaps the peculiar external tachometer is missing – optional, of course – but when I look at this model on the palm of my hand, I want to enlarge it and get inside, turn on the engine and the radio and head to the beach listening to "Surfin' Safari", on a glorious and endless summer day. ●

Como nota de interesse, o título "The Judge" foi apropriado de um sketch cómico, "Here Comes the Judge", no programa televisivo americano "Laugh-In", de Rowan & Martin, transmitido de 1968 a 1973 na cadeia de televisão NBC.

A ideia de em 1969 a Pontiac decidir chamar a este seu exuberante "muscle car", "The Judge", "O Juíz", pode parecer surpreendente. Mas depois de um ano antes a Plymouth chamar a um dos mais espartanos e agressivos representantes da estirpe, o "Road Runner", a partir de um popular personagem de desenhos animados ("Bip Bip" em Portugal) e com uma buzina a condizer ("beep, beep!"), tudo parecia possível. O final dos anos sessenta foi de facto um período especial. Neste modelo, a Hot Wheels conquista-nos à partida ao evocar um dos esquemas originais de pintura (Pontiac "Orbit Orange" com faixas laterais em azul, rosa e laranja) e aplicando as assinaturas "Ram Air IV" e "The Judge" perfeitamente legíveis. Os puxadores das portas devidamente realçados são um mimo inesperado – pena os faróis e os pára-choques traseiros não receberem a mesma atenção, como acontece na versão GTO descapotável. O molde é de boa qualidade e razoavelmente acabado e as proporções parecem correctas. A frente é bem definida, assim como a (notavelmente robusta) asa à retaguarda. Os vidros fumados contrastam com a pintura e por fim, no interior em plástico preto, não falta sequer a alavanca de mudanças na consola. Sobre o capot, falta talvez o peculiar tacómetro externo – opcional, bem entendido – mas ao apreciar este modelo sobre a palma da minha mão tenho vontade de o ampliar e entrar nele e ligar o motor e o rádio e rumar à praia a ouvir "Surfin' Safari", num glorioso e interminável dia de Verão. ●

How much? 

Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described.
