Toddy – Topo Gigio

Miniatures of the character Topo Gigio, an anthropomorphic mouse star of the children's television show with his name, constituting the series "Topo Gigio". This series of 10 miniatures appears in 1981 ¹ associated with the chocolate powder brand Toddy, which offers two figurines on each 70.5 oz can ². White monochrome plastic, intended to be painted by children, thus expanding the play value of the figurines. No movable or removable parts. The height of the figurines is around 2.6 in. About 0.3–0.4 oz. These miniatures represent the Topo Gigio ³ in a number of human-like situations or activities. All the figurines show the legal marks "Maria Perego", "Rep. [Representado por] Rui Guedes – R.T.P." and "Disvenda". Maria Perego is the creator of the "Topo Gigio" universe. In Portugal, the show was aired in 1981–1982, presented by pianist Rui Guedes. Topo Gigio was voiced by actor Artur Semedo. ●

Cleaning these little things

Soap, warm water and a toothbrush is all that I need to clean these plastic figurines. If necessary, toothpaste can help remove some ink marks, especially those left by felt-tip pens. Most of these plastic figurines are now fifty years old and I do not advise the use of aggressive cleaning solutions, such as bleach. Exceptionally, and in the case of these figurines, if we find them painted and wish to restore them to their original condition, the patient and careful application of nail polish softener (alcohol, amyl acetate, ricinus communis oil) with cotton swabs is reasonably effective. This procedure should strictly be performed by adults, with appropriate protective gear and in a well-ventilated area. Finally, wash the figurine thoroughly with water and all-purpose household detergent. ● Sabão, água morna e uma escova de dentes é tudo o que preciso para limpar estas figurinhas de plástico. Se necessário, a pasta dentífrica pode ajudar a remover algumas marcas de tinta, sobretudo as deixadas por canetas de feltro. A maioria destas figurinhas de plástico tem agora cinquenta anos e não aconselho o uso de soluções de limpeza agressivas, como a lixívia. Excepcionalmente e no caso destas figurinhas, caso as encontremos pintadas e as pretendamos reverter para a sua condição original, a paciente e cuidadosa aplicação de amolecedor de esmalte de unhas (álcool, acetato de amila, óleo de rícino) com cotonetes é razoavelmente eficaz. Procedimento estritamente realizado por adultos, com devidas protecções e em ambiente arejado ou ventilado. No final, lavar bem a figurinha com água e detergente doméstico lava-tudo.

The fun started here!

It all started with a 70.5 oz can of Toddy chocolate powder, containing two Topo Gigio figurines. For a while, every occasion was a good one to drink huge (I mean, huge) glasses of chocolate milk...
