Yatming – '64 Chevy Impala SS

Scale model of an automobile in the "hot rod" style, the '64 Chevy Impala SS, made by Yatming. This example is reference 1070, included in the "Road Tough – Modern Classics" series. It is made in Hong Kong, possibly in the 1980s. Metal body painted in black, with golden stripping printed over the hood, top and trunk lid. Metal base, unpainted. Glazing represented in blue tinted transparent plastic. Interior details in cream plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. Opening doors. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:70 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.4 oz. This model represents an automobile in the "hot rod" style (maybe a "lowrider") based on the 1964 Chevrolet Impala 2-door Hardtop Coupe with the SS (Super Sport) option, possibly equipped with 409 cu in (6.7 L), 425 hp  (317 kW) Chevrolet Turbo-Fire 409 "V8".

There are cars like that – they’re not pretty, but they have an unexpected charm. Like this 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS, still huge, over five meters long, but with a restrained appearance and far from the stylistic flourishes of previous generations. In this model, Yatming shows ambition – the doors open, the proportions are good and some of the details such as the expressive side moldings, the characteristic rear lights and even the peculiar, subtly broken roof line, are adequately reproduced. But the finish is poor and the paint job does little to disguise it. Of the ambitious details printed in gold, only two or three lines escape blurring and in the cream plastic interior unusual salmon-colored nuances emerge. But the "chrome" front is well shaped, the model has a robust metal base and the "road behavior" does not disappoint. Finally, I accept that, like the car it seeks to replicate, this model is not pretty, but it has an unexpected charm. And I like to imagine that under the hood is the powerful Chevrolet Turbo-Fire "V8" engine with 425 horsespower waiting to wake up and that at the exact moment I turn on the radio I will hear – «She's real fine, my 409, my 4–0–9». Perfect. ●

Este modelo representa um automóvel em estilo "hot rod" (talvez um "lowrider") baseado no Chevrolet Impala 2-door Hardtop Coupe de 1964 com a opção SS (Super Sport), possivelmente equipado com o motor Chevrolet Turbo-Fire 409 "V8" de 409 cu in (6.7 L) e 425 hp (317 kW). 

Há automóveis assim – não são bonitos, mas têm um encanto inesperado. Como este Chevrolet Impala SS de 1964, ainda enorme, acima dos cinco metros de comprimento, mas de aspecto comedido e longe dos floreados estilísticos das gerações anteriores. Neste modelo, a Yatming mostra ambição – as portas abrem, as proporções são boas e alguns dos detalhes como os expressivos frisos laterais, as características luzes traseiras e até a peculiar linha do tejadilho, subtilmente quebrada, estão adequadamente reproduzidas. Mas o acabamento é sofrível e a pintura pouco ajuda a disfarçar. Dos ambiciosos detalhes impressos a dourado, apenas duas ou três linhas escapam ao esborratamento e no interior em plástico creme surgem insólitas nuances em cor de salmão. Mas a frente "cromada" está bem moldada, o modelo tem uma robusta base em metal e o "comportamento de estrada" não desilude. Por fim, aceito que, tal como o automóvel que procura reproduzir, este modelo não é bonito, mas tem um encanto inesperado. E gosto de imaginar que por baixo do capot se encontra o poderoso motor Chevrolet Turbo-Fire "V8" com 425 cavalos à espera de acordar e que no preciso momento em que ligar o rádio vou ouvir – «She's real fine, my 409, my 4-0-9». Perfeito. ●
