Hot Wheels – Hirohata Merc

Metal body painted in metallic green, with printed details including the distinctive Buick side trim and "Barris Kustom" crests on the fenders. Dark green plastic base, ingeniously prolonged on the sides, simulating part of the lower body. Appleton spotlights summarily represented in "chrome" plastic. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with molded details. Interior details in "chrome" plastic. Plastic wheels with white printed details (5SP/WWB5SP). No suspension. The nominal scale is 1:64 and the overall length is approximately 3.1 in. About 1.1 oz. This model represents an automobile in the "custom" style ("led sled"), the Bob Hirohata Custom Coupe (or Hirohata Merc), built in 1952–1953 by Barris Kustom and based on a 1951 Mercury Eight Club Coupe. The original Mercury engine is replaced by a Cadillac 331 engine in 1953.
There are cars that are born like that – perfect. For several years I have been following the story of the iconic Hirohata Merc, commissioned by Robert Hirohata from Barris Kustom in 1952 – and I have always wanted to have it in my garage. In 1:64 scale, of course. It is true that in 1997 Hot Wheels launched an excellent quality miniseries, the "Hot Wheels Legends", reproducing four Barris Kustom creations, including the Hirohata Merc. But this miniseries had to be mail-ordered, and the $119.96 price tag was, shall we say, demanding. So when in 2024 Hot Wheels released a less elaborate version of the Hirohata Merc in the "2024 Rod Squad" miniseries, my wish finally came true. The proportions are good, as is the casting, even if in my example it is betrayed by some manufacturing imperfections. The paint is well applied, even if the chosen green seems different to the original, more blueish. The idea of forming the dark green part of the body with the lateral extension of the base is, in my opinion, brilliant. The solution to reproduce the Appleton spotlights is acceptable, but requires some imagination. The interior is reasonably detailed, although the choice of "chrome" plastic reminds us that we are in the presence of a toy – I would have preferred it in the same color as the base, in dark green. Given what's available, the wheels seem like an adequate choice to me, and as you'd expect from a Hot Wheels, they roll well. The wheels of my model immediately took it to a prominent place in my garage where I never tire of admiring it. In 1953, when it was born, the Hiroata Merc was not a revival at all – quite the opposite. George and Sam Barris, assisted by Frank Sonzogni and a remarkable team, took a contemporary car, a 1951 Mercury Eight, and launched it into the future as a functional work of art – visionary and timeless. Today, the Hiroata Merc is considered the quintessence of the "custom" movement. After being lovingly maintained over sixty years by Jim McNiel, the Hirohata Merc changed hands in 2022 for around $2 million and continues to inspire enthusiasts around the world. Há automóveis que nascem assim – perfeitos. Desde há vários anos que sigo a história do icónico Hirohata Merc, encomendado por Robert Hirohata à Barris Kustom em 1952 – e sempre o quis ter na minha garagem. Na escala 1:64, bem entendido. É certo que em 1997 a Hot Wheels lançou uma mini-série de excelente qualidade, a "Hot Wheels Legends", reproduzindo quatro criações da Barris Kustom, incluindo o Hirohata Merc. Mas esta mini-série tinha de ser encomendada pelo correio e o preço de 119,96 USD era, digamos, exigente. Assim, quando em 2024 a Hot Wheels lançou uma versão menos elaborada do Hirohata Merc na mini-série "2024 Rod Squad", o meu desejo tornou-se por fim realidade. As proporções são boas, assim como o molde, ainda que no meu exemplar seja traído por algumas imperfeições no fabrico. A pintura é bem aplicada, ainda que o verde escolhido me pareça diferente do original, mais azulado. A ideia de formar a parte verde-escura da carroçaria com o prolongamento lateral da base é, a meu ver, brilhante. A solução para reproduzir os focos Appleton é aceitável, mas requer alguma imaginação. O interior vem razoavelmente detalhado, ainda que a escolha de plástico "cromado" nos relembre que estamos na presença de um brinquedo – preferi-lo-ia na mesma cor da base, em verde-escuro. Dentro do que há disponível, as rodas parecem-me uma escolha adequada e, como se espera num Hot Wheels, rolam bem. As rodas do meu exemplar conduziram-no de imediato para um local de destaque na minha garagem onde não me canso de o admirar. Em 1953, quando nasceu, o Hiroata Merc nada tinha de revivalismos – pelo contrário. George e Sam Barris, assistidos por Frank Sonzogni e por uma equipa notável, pegaram num carro contemporâneo, um Mercury Eight de 1951, e projectaram-no para o futuro como obra de arte funcional – visionária e intemporal. Hoje, o Hirohata Merc é considerado a quintessência do movimento "custom". Depois de ter sido carinhosamente mantido ao longo de sessenta anos por Jim McNiel, o Hirohata Merc trocou de mãos em 2022 por cerca de 2 milhões de dólares e continua a inspirar entusiastas por todo o mundo. How much?
Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case and in Portugal, I will pay up to €3 for a Hirohata Merc by Hot Wheels, loose and in good condition, or up to €5 if boxed and in perfect condition.
