Welly – Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Scale model of an automobile, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray ¹, made by Welly. This example is reference 101B ², included in the "Racers" series. It is made in Hong Kong, possibly in the 1990s. Metal body painted in metallic blue, with printed details on the hood and top. Number "4" on the hood. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the windshield. Interior details in red plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. Opening doors. The nominal scale is 1:64 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 0.9 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1975 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe, equipped with the 350 cu in (5.7 L), 205 hp (153 kW) Chevrolet RPO L-82 "V8" engine.

When your starting point is a Tomica model from the seventies, there's not much that can go wrong. It's true that some details, such as the "Stingray" and "GM" signatures, fall by the wayside, but the proportions and functionality remain, even if the manufacturing and finishing quality is, overall, noticeably inferior. In the Welly model the plastic base is different – it extends to form the lower part of the nose and provides suspension by means of two tabs. The wheels are well molded and the axles adequate, but with only 0.9 oz of weight and a suspension that barely moves, for children of the nineties the "road behavior" must have left a lot to be desired. Still, this Welly model is attractive and has its charm and deserves a place in any collection of small Corvettes. ●

Este modelo representa um automóvel, possivelmente um Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe de 1975, equipado com o motor Chevrolet RPO L-82 "V8" de 350 cu in (5.7 L) e 205 hp (153 kW).

Quando o ponto de partida é um modelo Tomica dos anos setenta, não há muito que possa correr mal. É certo que alguns pormenores, como as assinaturas "Stingray" e "GM" ficam pelo caminho, mas as proporções e funcionalidades mantêm-se, mesmo que a qualidade de fabrico e acabamento seja, de uma forma geral, perceptivelmente inferior. No modelo da Welly a base em plástico é diferente – prolonga-se para formar a parte inferior do nariz e assegura a suspensão por meio de duas patilhas. As rodas são bem moldadas e os eixos adequados, mas com apenas 26 g de peso e uma suspensão que mal se mexe, para os miúdos dos anos noventa o "comportamento de estrada" deve ter deixado muito a desejar. Ainda assim, este modelo da Welly é apelativo e tem o seu encanto e merece o lugar em qualquer colecção de pequenos Corvette. ●

How much?

Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case and in Portugal, I will pay up to €3 for a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray made by Welly, loose and in good condition, or up to €5 if boxed and in perfect condition. ●
