Welly – Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Scale model of an automobile, the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am ¹, made by Welly. This example is reference 101B ², included in the "Racers" series. It is made in Hong Kong, possibly in the 1990s. Metal body painted in black, with a stylized Firebird printed in gold on the hood. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the windshield. Interior details in red plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. Opening doors. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:68 and the overall length is approximately 2.9 in. About 0.8 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am T/A Coupe, equipped with the 400 cu in (6.6 L), 200 hp  (149 kW) Pontiac "V8" engine. Top speed probably around 100 mph. As a note of interest, the "Firebird" is a mythological creature present in several ancient cultures, including the Native American. In the automotive context, the term is used by General Motors in the fifties on a series of turbine-powered prototypes, before being chosen by Pontiac in 1967 to name their venture into the "pony car" segment, dominated by the Ford Mustang, released in 1965.

Since their first "3-inch" models in the early eighties, Welly, based in Hong Kong, has made a remarkable evolution, improving the quality of their products and widening their offer to include all the most popular scales – 1:87, 1:60, 1:43, 1:38, 1:32, 1:24, 1:18 and 1:12. In 2025, not all of their "3-inch" models are spot-on, but most are certainly well-made, with clean and well defined castings, nice paint finishes, and good looking standard wheels. This Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, however, takes us back to Welly's early years. The proportions are essentially correct and the casting is reasonable, but the finish is not the best. At least, if we don't abuse them, the doors work well, the tampo printing is acceptable and the plastic interior is well detailed – and without having lost the steering wheel along the way. The wheels are well molded and finished, but the suspension integrated into the base is inefficient and they roll poorly and must have upset many kids in the nineties. The plastic base extends to form part of the rear of the vehicle and the result is, once again, not the best. Weighing just 24 grams, this is one of those models that I affectionately call "cookies". In this case, a "cookie" with an unmistakable Asian flavor from the eighties. ●

Vidros representados em plástico transparente com  detalhes moldados no pára-brisas. Detalhes interiores em plástico vermelho. Rodas em plástico com detalhes "cromados" a simular as jantes. Com suspensão. Abre as portas. A escala nominal parece ser à volta de 1:68 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 73 mm. Cerca de 24 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, possivelmente um Pontiac Firebird Trans Am T/A Coupe de 1977, equipado com o motor Pontiac "V8" de 400 cu in (6.6 L) e 200 hp (149 kW). Velocidade máxima provavelmente na ordem dos 161 km/h. Como nota de interesse, o "Firebird", "Pássaro de Fogo" ou "Fénix", é uma criatura mitológica presente em várias culturas ancestrais, incluindo a Nativa Americana. No contexto automóvel, o termo é usado pela General Motors nos anos 50 numa série de protótipos movidos a turbina, antes de ser escolhido pela Pontiac em 1967 para nomear a sua entrada no segmento "pony car", dominado pelo Ford Mustang, lançado em 1965.

Desde seus primeiros modelos "3-inches" no início dos anos 80, a Welly, baseada em Hong Kong, fez uma evolução notável, melhorando a qualidade dos seus produtos e ampliando a sua oferta para incluir todas as escalas mais populares – 1:87, 1:60, 1:43, 1:38, 1:32, 1:24, 1:18 e 1:12. Em 2025, nem todos os seus modelos "3-inches" são perfeitos, mas a maioria é certamente bem-feita, com moldes limpos e bem definidos, bons acabamentos de pintura, e rodas padrão de boa aparência. Este Pontiac Firebird Trans Am leva-nos, todavia, aos primeiros anos da Welly. As proporções estão essencialmente correctas e o molde é razoável, mas o acabamento não é o melhor. Pelo menos, se não abusarmos delas, as portas funcionam bem, a tampografia é aceitável e o interior em plástico apresenta-se bem detalhado – e sem ter perdido o volante pelo caminho. As rodas são bem moldadas e acabadas, mas a suspensão integrada na base é ineficiente e rolam mal e devem ter aborrecido muitos miúdos nos anos noventa. A base em plástico prolonga-se para formar parte da traseira do veículo e o resultado não é, mais uma vez, o melhor. Com apenas 24 gramas, este é dos tais modelos a que chamo carinhosamente de "biscoitinhos". Neste caso, um "biscoitinho" com um inconfundível sabor asiático dos anos oitenta e noventa. ●

How much?

Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case and in Portugal, I will pay up to €3 for a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am made by Welly, loose and in good condition, or up to €5 if boxed and in perfect condition. ●
