LB – Packard Coupe Roadster
Scale model of an automobile, the Packard Coupe Roadster, made by LB ¹. Reference and series unknown. It is made in Hong Kong, possibly in the 1980s. Metal body painted in red, including fenders and running boards. Dual side-mounted spare tires. Black plastic roof simulating canvas. Metal base, unpainted. Windshield without "glazing". Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. The nominal scale is 1:72 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.3 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1937 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster (Model 1507-1039), equipped with the 473.3 cu in (7.8 L), 175 hp (130 kW) Packard "V12" engine.
I know little about LB, presumably based in Hong Kong (LB Champions, according to some published sources). Only that, according to the HobbyDB page, it produced four models – Rolls-Royce 25/30 Convertible, Bugatti Coupe de Ville, Packard Coupe Roadster and Morgan Plus 8. Of these four models, the last three are evident copies of Tomica originals, discontinued from the "Tomica Foreign" series during the eighties – I do not know the origin of the Rolls-Royce. As a matter of sequence of events, I believe the date of manufacture was in the transition years between the 1980s and 1990s. As for this Packard Coupe Roadster, it is clearly a simplified copy of the Tomica original, but still of good quality. If on the one hand, and among other examples, the "rumble seat" loses its functionality, and the doors, the top of the hood and the spare tire covers deviate subtly from the original design, on the other hand the finish and paint job are reasonable and it maintains the metal base, good wheels and a good suspension. In this case, I don't think kids would be too disappointed to receive an LB car instead of a Tomica one. For those who consider copying to be a form of flattery, I believe that at some point LB (as well as CF, Yatming or Welly), unequivocally expressed its deep admiration for Tomica's incredible models. ●

Pouco conheço sobre a LB, presumivelmente baseada em Hong Kong (LB Champions, segundo algumas fontes publicadas). Apenas que, e de acordo com a página HobbyDB, produziu quatro modelos – Rolls-Royce 25/30 Convertible, Bugatti Coupe de Ville, Packard Coupe Roadster e Morgan Plus 8. Destes quatro modelos, os últimos três são evidentes cópias de originais Tomica, descontinuados da série "Tomica Foreign" ao longo da década de oitenta – desconheço a origem do Rolls-Royce. Por uma questão de sequência de eventos, acredito que a data de fabrico tenha ocorrido nos anos de transição entre as décadas de oitenta e noventa. Quanto a este Packard Coupe Roadster é claramente uma cópia simplificada do original da Tomica, mas ainda assim de boa qualidade. Se por um lado e entre outros exemplos, o "banco-da-sogra" perde a funcionalidade, e as portas, o topo do capot e as coberturas dos pneus suplentes se afastam subtilmente do desenho original, por outro lado o acabamento e a pintura são razoáveis e mantém a base em metal, boas rodas e uma boa suspensão. Neste caso, não creio que os miúdos ficassem muito desiludidos ao receber um carrinho da LB em vez de um da Tomica. Para aqueles que consideram que a cópia é uma forma de elogio, creio que a dada altura a LB (assim como a CF, a Yatming ou a Welly), expressou inequivocamente a sua profunda admiração pelos espantosos modelos da Tomica. ●
¹ Some sources identify this manufacturer as "LB Champions". I believe there are documents that justify this, but as I am not aware of them, I will opt for the name as it appears on the base of the models – "LB". ● Algumas fontes identificam este fabricante como "LB Champions".
