Tomica – Nissan Gloria Van

Scale model of an automobile, the Nissan Gloria Van, made by Tomica. This example is reference 47, included in the "Tomica Domestic" series. It is made in Japan, possibly in 1977. Metal body painted in metallic blue. Metal base, unpainted. "Glazing" represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the windshield. Interior details in red plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (1H). With suspension. Opening tailgate. License plate "VAN". The nominal scale is 1:65 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 1.6 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1975 Nissan Gloria Van 2000 DeLuxe (330), equipped with the 121.7 cu in (1998 cm³), 115 hp (85 kW) Nissan L20A "L6" engine. Top speed  around 93 mph. 

I remember exactly when I bought this model, on a beautiful spring day, after leaving school, in a stationery and tobacconist's in Lisboa, next to Calçada da Tapada. The store was small, four or five customers were enough to fill it, and we were all crammed in, but on the right side of the counter there was a display case full of colorful Tomica cars, placed on top of their respective blue and white or black and yellow packaging – and that was all I cared about. That day, new models had arrived. One of them caught my eye and wouldn't let go – it was this metallic blue Nissan Gloria Van, which opened the tailgate. I immediately imagined so many stories, loading and unloading this beautiful van. I brought it with me and I'm glad I did. Its design was familiar to me, especially from the Datsun 2200, 220C and 280D sedans, export versions of the Nissan Gloria and Cedric families and reasonably common in taxi services in Lisboa. Vans were less common, but now I had one myself, a tiny one, in my garage. Manufactured by Tomica for about two years, this model reproduces the proportions, character and stance of the original very well. The casting is of excellent quality, as is the paintwork. The tailgate still works well, but more with a touch than with force – gently press upwards at the top of the window. The interior is well detailed, including the T-spoke steering wheel, and the suspension has all the usual attributes of the manufacturer. Today, I know that this model was not a great sales success and that after a short time (1977–1978) it gave way to the Nissan Cedric Airport Taxi, also short-lived (1979–1980). For me, it doesn't matter, I don't even understand its failure – it was love at first sight and objectively an excellent model. Nowadays, it is particularly coveted and valuable. I'm glad I brought it home. ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em azul metalizado. Base em metal, sem pintura "cromado". Vidros representados em plástico transparente com detalhes moldados no pára-brisas. Detalhes interiores em plástico vermelho. Rodas em plástico com detalhes "cromados" a simular as jantes (1H). Com suspensão. Abre a porta traseira. Matrícula "VAN". A escala nominal é 1:65 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 72 mm. Cerca de 46 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, possivelmente um Nissan Gloria Van 2000 Deluxe (330) de 1975, equipado com o motor Nissan L20A "L6" de 121.7 cu in (1998 cm³) e 115 hp (85 kW). Velocidade máxima na ordem dos 150 km/h.

Lembro-me precisamente de quando adquiri este modelo, num belo dia de Primavera, depois de sair da escola, numa papelaria e tabacaria em Lisboa, junto à Calçada da Tapada. A loja era pequena, bastavam quatro ou cinco clientes para encher, para ficarmos todos apertados, mas do lado direito do balcão havia uma vitrina cheia de coloridos carrinhos da Tomica, colocados sobre as respectivas embalagens azuis e brancas ou pretas e amarelas – e era tudo o que me  importava. Nesse dia, tinham chegado novos modelos. Um deles prendeu o meu olhar e não mais o largou – era este Nissan Gloria Van azul metalizado, que abria a porta traseira. Imaginei logo ali tantas histórias, a carregar e a descarregar esta bonita carrinha. Trouxe-o comigo e ainda bem. O seu desenho era-me familiar, sobretudo pelos sedans Datsun 2200, 220C e 280D, versões de exportação das famílias Nissan Gloria e Cedric e razoavelmente comuns no serviço de táxi em Lisboa. As carrinhas eram menos comuns, mas agora eu próprio tinha uma, pequenina, na minha garagem. Fabricado pela Tomica durante cerca de dois anos, este modelo reproduz bem as proporções, o carácter e a postura do original. O molde é de excelente qualidade, assim como a pintura. A porta traseira ainda funciona bem, mais com jeito de que com força – pressionar suavemente para cima no topo da janela. O interior apresenta-se bem detalhado, incluindo o volante com raios em "T", e a suspensão tem todos os atributos habituais do fabricante. Hoje, sei que este modelo não foi um grande sucesso de vendas e que ao fim de pouco tempo (1977–1978) deu lugar ao Nissan Cedric Airport Taxi, também ele de produção efémera (1979–1980). Para mim, não importa, nem compreendo o seu insucesso – foi amor à primeira vista é e objectivamente um excelente modelo. Hoje em dia, é particularmente cobiçado e valioso. Ainda bem que o trouxe para casa. ●
