Technofix – Rangierlok

The overall length is approximately 3.2 in, or 3.6 in including the coupler. About 3 oz. This toy represents a switcher locomotive (or locotractor) in cartoon style, used on industrial branches and yards, maybe based on a 1966 LKM Babelsberg B 22 B. 

Ever since I was a child, I had the privilege of playing with Märklin electric trains. I was particularly impressed by their realistic details and mechanisms, as well as by the prodigious automation provided by electromagnets (relays), patiently explained by my father. At some point, I was assigned to maintain and repair the layout, including transformers, switchgear, signaling and all rolling stock – under strict supervision, of course. However, despite my fascination with these sophisticated electric trains, I never looked down on the other, simpler ones, made of plastic or sheet metal, powered by batteries or operated by wind-up mechanisms. I was always captivated by their simplicity, their improbable shapes and colors – and their obvious limitations. My favorites were the industrial trains from Biller, but at a certain point, even the scenic tracks from Technofix caught my attention. In these, the operational challenge was almost non-existent – but the rolling stock had a certain charm, as can be seen in this Rangierlok from the "Shunting Loader" set (325), launched in 1969. Its identity is unclear, it almost looks like an adaptation of a small pickup truck, but with a little good will we might discover similarities with the B 22 B switcher manufactured by LKM Babelsberg from 1966 onwards – or maybe not. For what really matters, I like this swither, its peculiar hump on the top of the hood hiding the spring of the mechanism, its aesthetic disharmony – and the attentive crew members, duly uniformed. In mechanical terms, it stops at pre-determined points on the track and reverses the direction of travel. The wind-up mechanism offers good autonomy, but does not allow towing large loads ³, despite the slightly serrated drive wheels to increase traction. I really like this switcher, which is almost sixty years old. The original scenic track has long since been lost – but one of these days I'll build another, nicer and bigger one, so that this Rangierlok and his friends can stretch their legs. ●

É feito na Alemanha (Western Germany), possivelmente em 1969. Carroçaria em metal (folha prensada) litografada em azul, com representação de vários detalhes. Rodas em metal prensado. Rodas traseiras com contornos ligeiramente serrilhados para aumentar a tracção. Mecanismo de corda com "embraiagem" ² e mudança automática de direcção. Número de frota "V 10202". O comprimento total é de aproximadamente 81 mm, ou 92 mm incluindo o engate. Cerca de 84 g. Este brinquedo representa uma locomotiva de manobras (ou locotractor) em estilo caricatural, utilizada em ramais e pátios industriais, talvez baseada numa LKM Babelsberg B 22 B de 1966.  

Desde pequeno que tive o privilégio de brincar com comboios eléctricos da Märklin. Neles, deslumbravam-me sobretudo os seus detalhes realistas e os mecanismos, assim como os prodigiosos automatismos assegurados por electroímanes (relés), pacientemente explicados pelo meu pai. A dada altura, foi-me atribuída a manutenção e reparação da maqueta, incluindo transformadores, desvios, sinalização e todo o material circulante – sob rigorosa supervisão, naturalmente. Contudo e apesar do fascínio por estes sofisticados comboios eléctricos, nunca desprezei os outros, mais simples, fabricados em plástico ou folha, alimentados a pilhas ou accionados por mecanismos de corda. Sempre me encantaram pela simplicidade, pelas suas formas e cores improváveis – pelas suas evidentes limitações. Os meus favoritos eram os comboios industriais da Biller mas, a certa altura, até as pistas-cenário da Technofix prenderam a minha atenção. Nelas, o desafio operacional era quase nulo – mas o material circulante tinha um certo encanto, como se pode verificar nesta Rangierlok proveniente do conjunto "Shunting Loader" (325), lançado em 1969. A sua identidade é pouco clara, quase parece a adaptação de uma pequena camioneta, mas com alguma boa vontade talvez descubramos nela parecenças com a locomotiva de manobras B 22 B fabricada pela LKM Babelsberg a partir de 1966 – ou talvez não. Para aquilo que realmente importa, gosto desta locomotiva de manobras, da sua peculiar bossa no topo do capot a esconder a mola do mecanismo, da sua desarmonia estética – dos atentos tripulantes devidamente fardados. Em termos mecânicos, pára em pontos pré-determinados na pista e inverte o sentido de marcha. O mecanismo de corda oferece uma boa autonomia, mas não permite rebocar grandes cargas ³, apesar das rodas motoras ligeiramente serrilhadas para aumentar a tracção. Gosto muito desta locomotiva de manobras, com quase sessenta anos. A pista cenário original há muito que se perdeu – mas um dia destes construo outra, mais bonita e maior, para que esta Rangierlok e os seus amigos possam esticar as pernas. ●

N/A Blue, wind-up mechanism with "clutch" and automatic direction change.

No matter how much I think about it, I always end up with the idea that this switcher locomotive was an adaptation of a small pickup truck. But then again, I don't know of any pickup truck in the Technofix line that could serve as a starting point. Any suggestions? The white arrow on the roof helped the children to position the vehicle correctly on the track. ●

Por mais voltas que dê, acabo sempre com a ideia de que esta locomotiva de manobras foi a adaptação de uma pequena camioneta. Mas, por outro lado, não conheço na gama da Technofix nenhuma camioneta que lhe pudesse servir de ponto de partida. Alguma sugestão? A seta em branco sobre o tejadilho ajudava as crianças a posicionar correctamente o veículo na pista. ●

 

Here too, the mechanism of this Technofix toy manufactured in 1969 continues to work perfectly. On the "belly", near the rear wheels, we see the "clutch" tab which, when it reaches a rectangular opening in the center of the rails, drops and stops the vehicle. The rear wheels benefit from slightly serrated contours to increase traction. Between them, the lever that allows the vehicle to reverse direction stands out. In this type of toy, I am always delighted by the subtlety and reliability of the mechanical solutions. ●

Também aqui, o mecanismo deste brinquedo da Technofix fabricado em 1969 continua a funcionar perfeitamente. Na "barriga", junto às rodas traseiras, vemos a patilha da "embraiagem" que, ao chegar a uma abertura rectangular no centro da via-férrea, descai e imobiliza o veículo. As rodas traseiras beneficiam de contornos ligeiramente serrilhados para aumentar a tracção. Entre ambas, sobressai a alavanca que permite ao veículo inverter o sentido da marcha. Neste tipo de brinquedo, encanta-me sempre a subtileza e fiabilidade das soluções mecânicas. ●
