Norev – Renault Dauphine Police
Scale model of a police car, the Renault Dauphine Police, made by Norev. This example is reference 423395, included in the "Renault Toys – Les P'tites Mythiques" series. It is made in China, I don't know its production period. Metal body painted in black and white ("pie" scheme), with printed details. Emergency lights in amber tinted transparent plastic. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the windshield. Interior details in black plastic. Detailed plastic rims with "chrome" finish, plastic tires with molded details. No suspension. The nominal scale is 1:54 and the overall length is approximately 2.9 in. About 1.3 oz. This model represents a police car operated by the Préfecture de police (Paris), possibly the 1958 Renault Dauphine, equipped with the rear mounted 845 cm³, 32 hp (23.5 kW) Renault Ventoux "L4" engine. Top speed around 71 mph. I don't know if the first Renault Dauphines used as police cars from 1958–59 received mechanical improvements. For all intents and purposes, from 1960 onwards the preference was for the more powerful Gordini version. Visually, the Renault Dauphine inherited the black and white livery of the Renault 4CV, earning them the nickname "Dauphines pie", presumably due to the resemblance to the plumage of the pie bavarde (magpie).
Renault Dauphine police cars are completely unfamiliar to me. Perhaps I've seen them occasionally in some French police film, but I don't remember. For all intents and purposes, the idea of a police car with only 32 hp seems ambitious to me—but it at least has a nice figure. Just like the miniature proposed by Norev. Based on the civilian version, it essentially retains the same attributes. However, applying the "pie" paint scheme to a bulbous body isn't easy. Just look at the delicate black outline of the rear window to understand the challenge. Still, Norev achieves a good result—despite some paint splatter in unexpected areas. The application of the "Dauphine" signature is excellent, but the accents given by paint to other elements are limited here to the taillights. The emergency light (gyrophare, in French) seems oversized to me, but, for children, I understand the need for robustness. Unfortunately, in my example, the nice steering wheel fell onto the seat and the somewhat wobbly wheels add a certain drama to any police chase. But, and for what really matters, I really like this miniature and when I find one that's already been played with, I'll take the opportunity to make a (fictitious) Portuguese version, of the Public Security Police—géographie oblige. ●

Este modelo representa um carro de polícia operado pela Préfecture de police (Paris), possivelmente o Renault Dauphine de 1958, equipado com o motor Renault Ventoux "L4" de 845 cm³ e 32 hp (23,5 kW). Velocidade máxima na ordem dos 115 km/h. Desconheço se os primeiros Renault Dauphine utilizados como carros de polícia a partir de 1958–59 receberam melhorias mecânicas. Para todos os efeitos, a partir de 1960 a preferência vai para a versão Gordini, mais potente. Visualmente, os Renault Dauphine herdaram dos Renault 4CV a farda em preto e branco, valendo-lhes o cognome de "Dauphines pie", presumivelmente pela semelhança com a plumagem da pie bavarde (pega-rabuda).
Carros de polícia Renault Dauphine não me são de todo familiares. Talvez os tenha visto ocasionalmente em algum filme policial francês, mas não me recordo. Para todos os efeitos, a ideia de um carro de polícia com apenas 32 hp parece-me ambiciosa—mas tem pelo menos uma boa figura. Assim como a miniatura proposta pela Norev. Baseada na versão civil, retém essencialmente os mesmos atributos. Todavia, aplicar o esquema de pintura "pie" numa carroçaria bulbosa não é fácil. Basta apreciar o delicado contorno a preto da janela traseira para o compreender o desafio. Ainda assim, a Norev consegue um bom resultado—apesar de alguns salpicos de tinta em áreas inesperadas. A aplicação da assinatura "Dauphine" é excelente, mas o realce dado por pintura a outros elementos é aqui limitado às luzes traseiras. A luz de emergência (rotativo, "pirilampo", ou gyrophare, em francês) parece-me sobredimensionada, mas, pelas crianças, compreendo a necessidade de robustez. Infelizmente, no meu exemplar, o bonito volante descaiu sobre o assento e as rodas, algo desengonçadas, conferem um certo drama a qualquer perseguição policial. Mas, e para aquilo que de facto interessa, gosto muito desta miniatura e quando encontrar alguma já brincada aproveito e faço uma versão portuguesa (fictícia), da Polícia de Segurança Pública—géographie oblige. ●
