Matchbox – Stretcha Fetcha

A fictional vehicle without a precise scale, but associated with the context of "3-inch" models ¹. The overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 1.5 oz. This model represents a fictional ambulance, in a futuristic style. The vehicle's name, Stretcha Fetcha, is a play on the words "stretcher" and "fetch," expressing the idea of "picking up (the patient) on a stretcher".

At some point in the seventies, and perhaps influenced by the need to react to some of Hot Wheels' astonishing creations (Deora, Silhouette, Beatnik Bandit, among others), several manufacturers proposed a good number of fictional vehicles, some reasonably believable, others completely delirious. The Stretcha Fetcha ambulance is one example proposed by the normally conservative Matchbox. Without dwelling on some technical challenges, such as the enormous panoramic windshield, the curious amphibious front, or the crew's access to the cabin, the Stretcha Fetcha is indeed eye-catching and reasonably believable, remaining in the catalog between 1972 and 1976, with variants until 1980—and originating peculiar copies in Spain. The casting is of good quality, robust, and well detailed. The white paint is well applied and quite resistant. The metal base, painted red, extends forward to form the grille, headlights, and turn signals. The cab interior is detailed, as is the area designated for transporting patients, showing one already on its way to the hospital. The wheels are robust and roll well. In terms of play value, the opening of the rear door is fundamental for the credibility of the rescues. As a kid, I played with this Stretcha Fetcha and transported some victims of spectacular accidents on the carpet to the hospital—fortunately, and as far as I remember, they all turned out well. ●

A dada altura nos anos setenta e talvez influenciados pela necessidade de reagir a algumas espantosas criações da Hot Wheels (Deora, Silhouette, Beatnik Bandit, entre outros), vários fabricantes propuseram um bom número de veículos fictícios, uns razoavelmente credíveis, outros completamente delirantes. A ambulância Stretcha Fetcha é um dos exemplos propostos pela normalmente conservadora Matchbox. Sem nos prendermos por alguns desafios técnicos, como o enorme pára-brisas panorâmico, a curiosa frente anfíbia ou o acesso dos tripulantes à cabina, a Stretcha Fetcha é de facto apelativa e razoavelmente credível, permanecendo no catálogo entre 1972 e 1976, com variantes até 1980—e originando peculiares cópias em Espanha. O molde é de boa qualidade, robusto e bem detalhado. A tinta branca é bem aplicada e bastante resistente. A base em metal, pintada de vermelho, prolonga-se para a frente para formar a grelha, os faróis e piscas. O interior da cabina é detalhado, assim como a área destinada ao transporte de pacientes, mostrando um já a caminho do hospital. As rodas são robustas e rodam bem. Em termos de valor lúdico, a abertura da porta traseira é fundamental para a credibilidade dos resgates. Em miúdo, brinquei com esta Stretcha Fetcha e conduzi ao hospital algumas vítimas resultantes de aparatosos acidentes sobre o tapete—felizmente e tanto quanto me recordo, todas ficaram bem. ●

Following a spectacular crash and rollover, the modern Stretcha Fetcha ambulance enabled the victim's quick and safe transport to the hospital. Thanks to the use of a seatbelt, the driver suffered only minor abrasions and trauma. ●
