Matchbox – Toe Joe
Scale model of a tow truck, the Toe Joe, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 74, included in the "1–75 Superfast" series. It is made in England, between 1976 and 1978. Metal body painted in metallic green, cranes in green plastic ¹, hooks in red plastic. Metal base, unpainted. Windows represented in transparent orange (amber) tinted plastic, with molded details in the windshield. Emergency lights in transparent orange (amber) tinted plastic. Interior details in yellow plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. Pivoting cranes. The nominal scale seems to be 1:66 ² and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in, or 2.9 in with boom projection included. About 1.6 oz. This model represents a fictional tow truck in a futuristic style. The vehicle's name, Toe Joe, is a play on the words "tow" and "joe" (slang for "dude" or "fellow"), and it's difficult to express its precise meaning, perhaps something like "the dude/vehicle that tows".
As a kid, this Toe Joe was one of my favorite models. In truth, the twin cranes didn't make towing vehicles any easier, especially on curves—but the design, stance, and modern feel of this tow truck were irresistible. To the point that I eventually amassed a small fleet of these creatures. And I wasn't alone—considering all versions, the Toe Joe remained in the catalog for a decade, between 1972 and 1982, and I remember that almost all my friends had one. The casting is of good quality, robust, and well-detailed. The unpainted metal base fits into the front of the body to form the perfectly molded grille and headlights. The application of the metallic green paint is very good and displays a pleasant, almost satin finish. The cab interior is suitably detailed—and the seats are spacious and comfortable! The wheels are sturdy and roll well. In terms of play value, the functional cranes allow for long hours of fun rescuing and diligently transporting damaged vehicles to the workshop. As a kid, I played a lot with these Toe Joes. Some fifty years later, I still smile when I see them in my garage enjoying a deserved rest. ●

O nome do veículo, Toe Joe, é uma brincadeira com as palavras "tow" (reboque) e "joe" (em gíria, tipo) e é difícil expressar em português o seu sentido preciso, talvez algo como "o tipo/veículo que reboca".
Em miúdo, este Toe Joe era um dos meus modelos favoritos. Em boa verdade, as gruas gémeas não facilitavam o reboque dos veículos, sobretudo nas curvas—mas o desenho, a postura e o ar de modernidade deste pronto-socorro encantavam-me. Ao ponto de eventualmente reunir uma pequena frota destas criaturas. E eu não estava sozinho—consideradas todas as versões, o Toe Joe permaneceu no catálogo ao longo de uma década, entre 1972 e 1982, e lembro-me que quase todos os meus amigos tinham um. O molde é de boa qualidade, robusto e bem detalhado. A base em metal, sem pintura, encaixa na frente da carroçaria para formar a grelha e os faróis, perfeitamente moldados. A aplicação da pintura verde metalizada é muito boa e exibe um agradável acabamento próximo do acetinado. O interior da cabina é adequadamente detalhado—e os assentos são amplos e confortáveis! As rodas são robustas e rodam bem. Em termos de valor lúdico, as gruas funcionais permitem longas horas de brincadeira a resgatar e levar diligentemente até à oficina os veículos avariados. Em miúdo, brinquei imenso com estes Toe Joe. Cerca de cinquenta anos depois, ainda sorrio quando os vejo na minha garagem a desfrutar de um merecido descanso. ●
