Corgi – AMC Pacer
Scale model of an automobile, the AMC Pacer, made by Corgi. This example is reference E62, included in the "Corgi Juniors" series. It is made in Great Britain, introduced in 1977. Metal body painted in metallic blue. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in white plastic (with a subtle blue tint). Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. No suspension. Tow hitch. The nominal scale seems to be 1:60 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in, or 2.9 in including the towing device. About 0.9 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly the 1975 AMC Pacer D/L 232 Hatchback, equipped with the 3801 cm³, 74.5 kW (100 hp) AMC 232 "L6" engine. Top speed around 90 mph.
As a kid, I never felt much enthusiasm for the "Corgi Juniors" series. With a few notable exceptions, the models were lightweight, with flimsy suspensions and delicate functional elements—I still remember the annoying engine cover on the Fiat X1/9. At some point, the integration of eye-catching models from the ephemeral "Corgi Rockets" series made things more interesting, but even then the enthusiasm remained moderate. In this AMC Pacer, the casting is acceptable, despite the simplification or even absence of some details. As for the proportions, I believe they are close to the originals—perhaps even closer than the Tomica model—but something about them doesn't feels right. The embossed representation of the hood and doors opening lines is disconcerting, but, on a positive note, the longer door on the right side to facilitate access to the rear seats was not forgotten—very good. Another positive note is the detailed base. Combining the interior details, the front and the rear in a single piece is an interesting technical solution, but the result, especially in the treatment of the front, could have been better. The interior details are adequate, but without the finesse found in other manufacturers. The paint job is well applied and reasonably durable. The "Whizzwheels" type wheels are well molded and finished and roll very well, and in terms of play value, kids could count on a towing device. The AMC Pacer is one of my favorite "ugly ducklings." I've always liked it, both full-size and miniature. Of the model proposed by Corgi, I have a few in my garage. But not the version with the "chrome" interiors—even for an enthusiast of the peculiar Pacer, that's going too far. ●

Em miúdo, nunca senti um grande entusiasmo pela série "Corgi Juniors". Salvo notáveis excepções, os modelos eram leves, com suspensões frágeis e elementos funcionais delicados—ainda me lembro da irritante tampa do motor no Fiat X1/9. A dada altura, a integração de apelativos modelos provenientes da efémera série "Corgi Rockets" tornou as coisas mais interessantes, mas mesmo assim o entusiasmo permaneceu moderado. Neste AMC Pacer, o molde é aceitável, apesar da simplificação ou mesmo ausência de alguns pormenores. Quanto às proporções, acredito que se aproximem das originais—talvez até mais do que as do modelo Tomica—mas há nelas qualquer coisa que não bate certo. A representação em relevo das linhas de abertura do capot e das portas é desconcertante, mas, como nota positiva, não foi esquecida a porta mais longa no lado direito para facilitar o acesso aos bancos traseiros—muito bom. Outra nota positiva é a base detalhada. Associar os detalhes interiores, a frente e a traseira numa só peça é uma solução técnica interessante, mas o resultado, sobretudo no tratamento da frente, podia ter sido melhor. Os detalhes interiores são adequados, mas sem a finura encontrada noutros fabricantes. A pintura é bem aplicada e razoavelmente resistente As rodas, do tipo "Whizzwheels", são bem moldadas e acabadas e rolam muito bem, e em termos de valor lúdico, os miúdos podiam contar com um dispositivo de reboque. O AMC Pacer é um dos meus "patinhos-feios" favoritos. Sempre gostei dele, em tamanho real e em miniatura. Do modelo proposto pela Corgi, tenho alguns na minha garagem. Mas não a versão com os interiores "cromados"—mesmo para um entusiasta do peculiar Pacer, isso é ir longe demais. ●
