Paul's Model Art – Fiat 500

Scale model of an automobile, the Fiat 500, made by Paul's Model Art. This example is reference 640 121500, included in the "Microchamps" ¹ series. It is made in China, possibly in 1995. Metal body painted in ochre yellow ², with printed details. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in beige and pale green plastics, with printed accents. Plastic wheels, detailed plastic rims with a polished aluminum-look finish. No suspension. Canvas roof shown in open position. The nominal scale is 1:64 and the overall length is approximately 1.8 in. About 0.5 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly the 1965 Fiat 500 F, equipped with the air-cooled rear-mounted 499.5 cm³, 18 hp (13 kW) Fiat "L2" engine. Top speed around 59 mph. 

 

In the context of "3-inch" models, this Fiat 500 is perhaps the most endearing car in my collection—it's impossible to look at it without smiling. The model is captivating, and it almost seems as if Paul's Model Art magically reduced the prototype to the size of a stuffed olive. The casting is excellent and captures well the chubby proportions and cheeky stance of the original. The paintwork is well applied, as are the printed details—the "aluminum" or "rubber" window frames are almost flawless. At the front, a detailed ornament with a proper representation of the grille and the presence of the Fiat emblem would be "the icing on the cake". But it's fine as it is. The canvas roof kept in the open position is an excellent choice and allows us to observe the impeccable interior—where I, who have had the pleasure of driving some of these creatures, easily recognize the details, including the starting levers (choke and ignition). The tiny wheels are well molded and feature correctly detailed rims, but they have no ambition for racing on the carpet—this is clearly a model for display. The Fiat 500, alongside its larger sibling, the 600, defined an era where the pleasure of driving was more linked to a sense of connection with the car, to a feeling of emancipation and freedom, than to size, comfort, power, or speed ³. How many times, at the end of the workday, behind the wheel of the Fiat 500 or 600, did I choose the longer route home, the window open, a breeze on my face, my arm resting on the window, the hoarse but refined voice of the engine—and a smile that wouldn't fade. Mentalities don't always change for the better and tragically some premises of happiness are lost forever. ●

Este modelo representa um automóvel, possivelmente o Fiat 500 F de 1965, equipado com o motor Fiat "L2" de 499.5 cm³ e 18 hp (13 kW), refrigerado a ar e montado à retaguarda. Velocidade máxima na ordem dos 95 km/h. 

No contexto dos modelos  "3-polegadas", este Fiat 500 é talvez o carro mais ternurento da minha colecção—é impossível olhar para ele sem esboçar um sorriso. O modelo é cativante e quase parece que a Paul's Model Art se limitou por artes mágicas a reduzir o protótipo ao tamanho de uma azeitona recheada. O molde é excelente e capta bem as proporções gordinhas e a postura traquinas do original. A pintura é bem aplicada, assim como os detalhes impressos—as molduras das janelas em "alumínio" ou "borracha" são quase irrepreensíveis. Na frente, um ornamento detalhado com a devida representação da grelha e a presença do emblema Fiat, seria "a cereja no topo do bolo". Mas está bem assim. O tejadilho de lona mantido em posição aberta é uma excelente escolha e permite-nos observar o interior irrepreensível—onde eu, que tive o gosto de conduzir algumas destas criaturas, reconheço facilmente os pormenores, incluindo as alavancas de arranque ("ar" e ignição). As minúsculas rodas são bem moldadas e exibem jantes correctamente detalhadas, mas não têm qualquer ambição para correrias sobre o tapete—este é claramente um modelo para a vitrina. O Fiat 500, ao lado do seu irmão maior, o 600, definiram uma época onde o prazer de conduzir estava mais ligado à cumplicidade com o carro, à sensação de emancipação e liberdade, do que ao tamanho, ao conforto, à potência ou velocidade disponíveis ³. Quantas vezes, ao final do dia de trabalho, ao volante do Fiat 500 ou do 600, escolhia o caminho mais longo para regressar a casa, a janela aberta, brisa no rosto, o braço apoiado na janela, a voz rouca, mas afinada, do motor—e um sorriso que não anoitecia. Nem sempre as mentalidades mudam para melhor e tragicamente há premissas de felicidade que se perdem para sempre. ●
