Welly – Renault 5
Scale model of an automobile, the Renault 5, made by Welly. This example is reference 52361. It is made in China, possibly in 2016. In Portugal, this model was available in the "Carros Miniatura II" series, promoted by Cofina in 2016–2017. When purchasing the newspapers "Correio da Manhã" or "Record", the reader could additionally purchase the model ¹. Metal body painted in red, with printed details. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the windshield. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels, tires with detailed tread and rims with metallic gray finish. No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:49 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 1.2 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly the 1972 Renault 5 L, equipped with 845 cm³, 38 hp (28 kW) Renault "L4" engine. Top speed around 76 mph.
Modern in appearance, economical, easy to drive, and spacious, for many years the Renault 5, along with the Fiat 127, seemed to be the car of choice for young people and teachers. In the context of "3-inch" cars, I particularly remember the Matchbox model, with its functional tailgate and towing device—a more common model than those offered by Majorette or Norev and, in my opinion, better executed. At this scale, Welly offers a good quality casting, with addequate proportions and stance. It's a shame that the characteristic vents on the "C" pillars only appear as printed details. The passenger doors are well molded—not so much the tailgate, nor the taillights. The paint is well applied, as are the printed details. The black plastic base (not always well fitted) extends to the front and rear—at the front, it flawlessly displays the headlights and turn signals, the grille, and the wraparound bumper; at the rear, it shows the wraparound bumper and reflectors. On this scale, the interior details are also flawless, including the characteristic steering wheel, the ribbed dashboard, and the peculiar gearshift lever inherited from the Renault 4, present in the early series. The wheels, one of the standard Welly types, are well-shaped and detailed, but once again, they refuse to race. In short, like the Renault 4 from the same manufacturer, this little creature is far from perfect, but it does its best to get there, and that's part of its charm. For those who want to, it's easy to improve it—just paint the bumpers gray, properly accent the turn signals and reflectors, and add one or two more details to make a big difference. But, for what matters, even without modifications this is surely one of the best Renault 5s in the "3-inch" world. ●

Em Portugal, este modelo foi disponibilizado na série "Carros Miniatura II", promovida pela Cofina em 2016–2017. Na compra dos jornais "Correio da Manhã" ou "Record" o leitor podia comprar adicionalmente o modelo ¹. Carroçaria em metal pintada em vermelho, com detalhes impressos. Base em plástico preto. Vidros representados em plástico transparente com detalhes moldados no pára-brisas. Detalhes interiores em plástico preto. Rodas em plástico, pneus com piso detalhado e jantes com acabamento em cinzento metalizado. Sem suspensão. A escala nominal parece ser à volta de 1:49 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 71 mm. Cerca de 34 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, possivelmente o Renault 5 L de 1972, equipado com o motor Renault "L4" de 845 cm³ e 38 hp (28 kW). Velocidade máxima na ordem dos 122 km/h.
De aspecto moderno, económico e fácil de conduzir, espaçoso, durante muitos anos o Renault 5 parecia ser, a par do Fiat 127, o carro de eleição dos jovens e dos professores. No contexto dos "3-polegadas" lembro-me sobretudo do modelo da Matchbox, com porta traseira funcional e dispositivo de reboque, modelo mais comum do que os propostos pela Majorette ou Norev e, a meu ver, melhor conseguido. Nesta escala, a Welly propõe-nos um molde de boa qualidade, com proporções e postura adequadas. É pena que os característicos ventiladores nos pilares "C" surjam apenas como detalhes impressos. As portas dos passageiros são bem moldadas—não tanto a porta da bagageira, assim como as luzes traseiras. A pintura é bem aplicada, assim como os detalhes impressos. A base em plástico preto (nem sempre bem encaixada) prolonga-se à frente e atrás—à frente, mostra-nos de forma irrepreensível os faróis e piscas, a grelha e o pára-choques envolvente; atrás, mostra-nos o pára-choques envolvente e os reflectores. A esta escala, também os detalhes interiores são irrepreensíveis, incluindo o característico volante, o painel canelado e peculiar alavanca de velocidades herdada do Renault 4, presente nas primeiras séries. As rodas, um dos tipos padrão da Welly, são bem moldadas e detalhadas, mas mais uma vez recusam correrias. Em suma, tal como a Renault 4 do mesmo fabricante, esta pequena criatura está longe de ser perfeita, mas faz o possível para lá chegar e tem nisso parte do seu encanto. Para quem o desejar, é fácil melhorá-la—basta pintar os pára-choques de cinzento, destacar devidamente os piscas e reflectores e mais um ou dois pormenores para fazer uma boa diferença. Mas, para aquilo que interessa, mesmo sem alterações este é sem dúvida um dos melhores Renault 5 no mundo dos "3-polegadas". ●
