Matchbox – Atlas
Scale model of a dump truck, the Atlas, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 23, included in the "1–75 Superfast" series. It is made in England, between 1977 and 1980. Metal cab and chassis painted in a purplish-blue color, metal cargo bed painted in orange. Metal base (clear coated?). Cabin windows represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in the cab in beige plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. No suspension. Tilting cargo bed. A fictional vehicle without a precise scale, but associated with the context of "3-inch" models ¹. The overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 2.2 oz. This model represents a fictional dump truck in a futuristic style.
I've always liked robust dump trucks, especially the titanic examples associated with mining operations, always loaded to the limits of their capacity. As for this fictional Matchbox model, I suspect the original design wouldn't have lasted long in a construction yard, with its large glazed surfaces exposed to all sorts of projections and scorching engine inside the cab, right behind the seats and without any perceptible ventilation. Even so, I remember that this dump truck was quite popular with kids. In the seventies, all my friends seemed to have one or two, usually worn down by an intense working life. In fact, the Atlas secured its place in the catalog for almost a decade, between 1975 and 1982, with a final variant in 1991. Based on a futuristic concept, the miniature proposed by Matchbox is quite appealing. The casting is of reasonable quality, very robust, well-proportioned, and featuring interesting details. Here too, the metal base fits into the front of the cab to form the grille and headlights. The paint job is of good quality and durable. The crew's access to the cab intrigues me, but for all intents and purposes the interior is adequately detailed, even including the engine, right behind the seats. The wheels are robust and suitable for outdoor play on dirt. In terms of play value, the functional cargo bed is irresistible to children, and as I mentioned before, it was rare to see a well-preserved Atlas. At some point, my two examples were retired from service and scrapped for pieces. Fortunately, about twenty years later, I had the opportunity to acquire a small fleet, still in their packaging. It was a happy day. ●

Este modelo representa um camião basculante fictício em estilo futurista.
Sempre gostei dos robustos camiões basculantes, sobretudo dos titânicos exemplares associados a actividades mineiras, sempre carregados nos limites das suas capacidades. Quanto a este modelo fictício da Matchbox, suspeito que o pressuposto original não teria vida longa num estaleiro, com as suas amplas superfícies vidradas expostas a todo o tipo de projecçõese os escaldantes motores geminados dentro da cabina, logo atrás dos assentos e sem qualquer ventilação perceptível. Mesmo assim, lembro-me que este camião basculante era bastante popular entre os miúdos. Nos anos setenta, todos os meus amigos pareciam ter um ou dois, normalmente desgastados por uma intensa vida de trabalho. De facto, o Atlas garantiu a sua presença no catálogo ao longo de quase uma década, entre 1975 e 1982, com uma derradeira variante em 1991. Baseada num conceito futurista, a miniatura proposta pela Matchbox é bastante apelativa. O molde é de qualidade razoável, muito robusto, bem proporcionado e enriquecido com interessantes detalhes. Também aqui, a base em metal encaixa-se na frente da cabina para formar a grelha e os faróis. A pintura é de boa qualidade e resistente. O acesso dos tripulantes à cabina intriga-me, mas para todos os efeitos o interior mostra-se adequadamente detalhado, incluindo até os motores geminados, logo atrás dos assentos. As rodas são robustas e adequadas a brincadeiras no exterior, sobre a terra. Em termos de valor lúdico, a caixa de carga funcional é irresistível para os miúdos e como refiro anteriormente era difícil ver um Atlas bem conservado. A dada altura, os meus dois exemplares foram retirados de serviço e desmantelados para peças. Felizmente, cerca de vinte anos depois, tive a oportunidade de adquirir uma pequena frota, ainda dentro das embalagens. Foi um dia feliz. ●

After "operating" my Atlas trucks to exhaustion, it was a privilege, some twenty years later, to have had the opportunity to acquire a small fleet still in their packaging. The Atlas dump truck was very popular among boys. During outdoor play, on dirt and stones, the generous glazed surfaces were quickly damaged, but the functional cargo boxes were almost indestructible. ●
