Rajá – Ele & Ela

Miniatures of human figures in "cartoon" style constituting the series "Ele & Ela". This series of 16 miniatures appears in 1969 associated with the Rajá ice cream brand, which offers a figurine on each ice cream purchased. Monochrome plastic, various colors. No movable or removable parts. The height of the figurines varies between approximately 1.3 in and 1.4 in. About 0.1 oz. These miniatures depict a group of boys and girls dressed in Portuguese regional costumes, some playing a musical instrument. Two characters of the series are also available in larger sized figures, announced as "bonecos super-gigantes". These figures are hollow, made in plastic ("ultratene", ultrathene) and with painted details. Kids need to find an ice cream stick showing the word "Brinde" (gift or premium) and then trade it at the vendor for one of these colorful figures. Under the base of the monochrome figurines, we find the character's name in capital letters and the Rajá logo. 

As a note of interest, the Rajá brand also produces chocolate bars and, possibly in parallel with the promotional action on ice creams, for a while the wrappers of these chocolate bars are decorated with characters from the theme "Ele & Ela", including several biographical notes and a contextual story, "A group of friends, university students, decided to hold a ball, in which each one would disguise himself as best as possible, using Portuguese regional costumes for this purpose. ". Created in 1955, Rajá is acquired by its competitor, Olá, in 1970.

These figurines, of excellent quality at various levels and in perfect harmony with their time, do not appear to be associated with any comics or tv cartoons – all the clues indicate that they are characters with strictly promotional purposes created within Rajá itself in the late 1960s. The authorship of the graceful illustrations used in the wrappers of the chocolate bars and starting point for the plastic figurines is apparently unknown, but several clues from the ongoing investigation seem to converge to a name – to be confirmed. As for the manufacture of these plastic figurines, it is attributed to Tito, from Tito Basto, a name later associated in Spain with the manufacture of numerous promotional items for brands such as Dunkin, Walt Disney or Coca-Cola. Necessary corrections or additions to the above are welcome.

Miniaturas de figuras humanas em estilo "cartoon" constituindo a série "Ele & Ela". Esta série de 16 miniaturas aparece em 1969 associada à marca de gelados Rajá, que oferece uma figurinha em cada gelado comprado. Plástico monocromático, diversas cores. Sem peças móveis ou amovíveis. A altura das figurinhas varia entre aproximadamente 32 e 35 mm. Cerca de 2 a 4 g. Estas miniaturas representam um grupo de rapazes e raparigas vestidos com trajes regionais portugueses, alguns a tocar um instrumento musical. Dois personagens da série também estão disponíveis em figuras de tamanho maior, anunciadas como "bonecos super-gigantes". Estas figuras são ocas, feitas em plástico ("ultratene", ultrateno) com detalhes pintados. As crianças precisam de encontrar um pauzinho de gelado mostrando a palavra "Brinde" e trocá-lo no vendedor por uma destas figuras coloridas. Sob a base das figurinhas monocromáticas encontramos o nome do personagem em letras maiúsculas e o logótipo da Rajá. 

Como nota de interesse, a marca Rajá também produz barras de chocolate e, possivelmente em paralelo com a acção promocional dos gelados, durante algum tempo os invólucros destas barras de chocolate vêm decorados com personagens do tema "Ele & Ela", incluindo diversas notas biográficas e uma história contextual, "Um grupo de amigos, estudantes universitários, resolveu realizar um baile, em que cada um se disfarçaria o melhor possível, usando para o efeito trajos regionais portugueses.". Criada em 1955, a Rajá é adquirida pela sua concorrente, Olá, em 1970.

Estas figurinhas, de excelente qualidade a vários níveis e em perfeita sintonia com a sua época, não parecem estar associadas a nenhuma banda desenhada ou a desenhos animados – todas as pistas indicam que são personagens com fins estritamente promocionais criados no seio da própria Rajá no final dos anos sessenta. A autoria das graciosas ilustrações utilizadas nos invólucros das barras de chocolate e ponto de partida para as figurinhas em plástico é aparentemente desconhecida, mas diversas pistas da investigação em curso parecem convergir para um nome – a confirmar. Quanto ao fabrico das figurinhas em plástico, é atribuído à Tito, de Tito Basto, nome posteriormente associado em Espanha ao fabrico de numerosos artigos promocionais para marcas como a Dunkin, a Walt Disney ou a Coca-Cola. Devidas correcções ou adições ao acima descrito são bem-vindas.

"Bonecos super-gigantes" – Bigger and different

Two characters of the series, "Tonicha Toxina" and "Duarte Direito", are also available in larger sized figures, announced as "bonecos super-gigantes". These figures, around 8.5 in tall, are hollow and made of plastic ("ultratene", ultrathene) with painted details. Contrary to what many collectors think, these are not copies of the monochromatic figures, but, as can be seen in these images courtesy of João Gonçalves, reproduced from different molds. ● 

Dois personagens da série, "Tonicha Toxina" e "Duarte Direito", também estão disponíveis em figuras de tamanho maior, anunciadas como "bonecos super-gigantes". Estas figuras, com cerca de 21,5 cm de altura, são ocas e feitas em plástico ("ultratene", ultrateno) com detalhes pintados. Ao contrário do que muitos coleccionadores pensam, não são cópias das figuras monocromáticas, mas sim, e como se pode verificar nestas imagens cortesia de João Gonçalves, reproduzidas a partir de moldes diferentes. ●

Little plastic souls

In my memory, these figurines are always associated with happy summer days on the beach, with the sweet aromas of vanilla and strawberry and chocolate, with people laughing and playing in the sand, with the waves gently lapping in the distance. To be honest, I don't play much with these figurines – it's hard for me to find suitable stories that last a whole day. But I find it fun to collect them. Fifty years later, I realize how graceful and well-made they are – and how well they represent the spirit of their time. The sixties and seventies are not easy times – but I remember that there was a kind of hope in the air and how things would be better if we tried hard enough. Today, in 2021, I look out my window and see streets that are almost deserted. I haven't seen many of my friends in a long time and some have left forever, taken by a disease that doesn't exist. In public spaces, my sense of smell is altered by the mandatory use of the sanitary mask – and I miss the sweet aromas of vanilla and strawberry and chocolate. As I take the picture, these sweet little figures seem to be looking at me, smiling. Do they know what is happening? Do they have memory? A little plastic soul? Yes, half a century later I am still here, holding you gently in my hands. I'm glad I didn't lose you. I'm glad you didn't leave. Thank you. ●

Na minha memória, estas figurinhas estão sempre associadas aos dias felizes de verão na praia, aos doces aromas de baunilha e morango e chocolate, às pessoas a rir e a brincar na areia, ao tranquilo marulhar das ondas ao longe. Para ser honesto, não brinco muito com estas figurinhas – é-me difícil encontrar-lhes histórias adequadas que durem um dia inteiro. Mas acho divertido coleccioná-las. Cinquenta anos depois, apercebo-me de como são graciosas e bem-feitas – e de como representam bem o espírito do seu tempo. Os anos sessenta e setenta não são tempos fáceis – mas lembro-me de haver no ar uma espécie de esperança no futuro e de como as coisas seriam melhores se tentássemos o suficiente. Hoje, em 2021, olho pela minha janela e vejo ruas quase desertas. Faz tempo que não vejo muitos dos meus amigos e alguns partiram para sempre, tomados por uma doença que não existe. Em espaços públicos, o meu olfacto é alterado pelo uso obrigatório da máscara sanitária – e sinto falta dos doces aromas a baunilha e morango e chocolate. Enquanto lhes tiro a fotografia, estas ternas figurinhas parecem olhar para mim, sorrindo. Será que sabem o que está a acontecer? Será que têm memória? Uma pequena alma de plástico? Sim, meio século depois ainda estou por aqui, segurando-vos delicadamente nas minhas mãos. Estou feliz por não vos ter perdido. Estou feliz por não se terem ido embora. Obrigado. ●

Cleaning these little things

Soap, warm water and a toothbrush is all that I need to clean these plastic figurines. If necessary, toothpaste can help remove some ink marks, especially those left by felt-tip pens. Most of these plastic figurines are now fifty years old and I do not advise the use of aggressive cleaning solutions, such as bleach. ● Sabão, água morna e uma escova de dentes é tudo o que preciso para limpar estas figurinhas de plástico. Se necessário, a pasta dentífrica pode ajudar a remover algumas marcas de tinta, sobretudo as deixadas por canetas de feltro. A maioria destas figurinhas de plástico tem agora cinquenta anos e não aconselho o uso de soluções de limpeza agressivas, como a lixívia.
