Matchbox – DAF Tipper Container Truck
Scale model of a dump truck, the DAF Tipper Container Truck, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 47, included in the "Matchbox 1–75" series. It is made in England, in 1969. Metal cab-chassis assembly, painted metallic gray; metal cargo box painted yellow, gray plastic cover. Sub-base (under the cab) in red plastic. Cab windows represented in transparent blue tinted plastic. No interior details in the cab. Black plastic wheels. No suspension. Tilting cargo box with removable cover; capable of maintaining the unloading position. License plate "K-14-68". The nominal scale is 1:94 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.9 oz. This model represents a dump truck ¹. The cab-chassis assembly is based on that of the DAF 2600 truck, introduced in 1962. The DAF 2600 trucks were initially equipped with the 210 hp (154 kW) Leyland/DAF DP "L6" diesel engine. Later, they benefited from power increases with the DK (212 hp), DKA (230 hp) and DKB (304 hp) diesel engines.
As a kid, I remember these trucks well—I didn't find them particularly attractive, but they certainly had a modern look. On my wanderings around the city, I would sometimes catch them speeding down Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa towards Lisbon's port area, making the viaduct over the Northern railway line tremble as they passed. So many good memories come flooding back when I see this DAF Tipper Container Truck in the palm of my hand. Offered by Matchbox in 1968 and 1969 with regular wheels, it was updated between 1970 and 1973 with "Superfast" wheels—the variant shown is from 1969. The casting is of good quality, very robust, well-proportioned and detailed, and the cab design is accurately reproduced, as is the characteristic windshield. The red plastic sub-base extends forward and fits into the cab, meticulously forming the face of the truck—the "DAF" signature in the correct font is an excellent detail. The paint is well applied and durable. The cab has no interior details. The wheels and axles are robust and adequately fulfill their function. The play value lies primarily in the enormous tilting cargo box with a removable cover, capable of maintaining the unloading position. I remember that, due to its metallic gray paint, modern look, and enormous tilting cargo box, this truck was a favorite of many kids—a reliable partner for long "work days" on the road. Fortunately, like the full-size DAF 2600, it was well-built and very robust. ●

Em miúdo, lembro-me bem destes camiões—não os considerava particularmente apelativos, mas tinham sem dúvida um aspecto moderno. Nas minhas deambulações pelos arredores da cidade, surpreendia-os por vezes a descer apressados a Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, rumo à zona portuária de Lisboa, fazendo estremecer à sua passagem o viaduto sobre a linha ferroviária do Norte. Tantas boas memórias ao ver este DAF Tipper Container Truck sobre a palma da minha mão. Proposto pela Matchbox em 1968 e 1969 com rodas regulares, é actualizado entre 1970 e 1973 com rodas "Superfast"—a variante mostrada é de 1969. O molde é de boa qualidade, muito robusto, bem proporcionado e detalhado, e o desenho da cabina é adequadamente reproduzido, assim como o característico pára-brisas. A sub-base em plástico vermelho prolonga-se para a frente e encaixa na cabina, formando meticulosamente o rosto do camião—a assinatura "DAF" com a fonte correcta é um excelente pormenor. A pintura é bem aplicada e resistente. Cabina sem detalhes no interior. As rodas e os eixos são robustos e cumprem adequadamente a sua função. O valor lúdico reside sobretudo na enorme caixa de carga basculante com cobertura amovível, capaz de suster a posição de descarga. Lembro-me que pela pintura cinzenta metalizada, pelo aspecto moderno e enorme caixa de carga basculante, este camião era o favorito de muitos miúdos—um parceiro incansável para longos "dias de trabalho" na estrada. Felizmente, tal como o DAF 2600 de tamanho real, era bem construído e muito resistente. ●
