Corgi – Mercedes-Benz Bus "España 82"
Scale model of a minibus, the Mercedes-Benz Bus "España 82", made by Corgi. This example is reference E116, included in the "Corgi Juniors" series. It is made in Great Britain, introduced in 1981. Metal body painted in red, with "ESPAÑA 82" stickers on the sides. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparen plastic. Interior simulated using printed paper placed near the windows, showing passengers and other details. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. The nominal scale seems to be 1:82 and the overall length is approximately 2.9 in. About 1.3 oz. This model represents a minibus, possibly the 1977 Mercedes-Benz O 309, equipped with the 3780 cm³, 63 kW (85 hp) Mercedes-Benz OM 314 "L4" engine.
The summer of 1982 was particularly happy. Besides the usual days at the beach, two World Cups were being played—one in Spain, broadcast on television, and the other, on a smaller scale, played by me and my friends thanks to the recent acquisition of an amazing Subbuteo pitch—complete with bleachers and floodlights! My team was Portugal. After convincing all my friends that in our small-scale reality, Portugal had reached the final stage of the World Cup, the games began. The will to win was enormous, as was the clumsiness—I've never seen so many injured fingers. This Corgi Mercedes-Benz Bus "España 82" was at some point one of the many pieces of football memorabilia that came into my hands. In this miniature, the casting is acceptable, despite the flaws and the simplification or even absence of certain details. Some of the creases in the bodywork are clearly exaggerated, the wheel wells are far from the original design, and the representation of the doors intrigues me. As for the proportions, the compromises are noticeable, especially the compression—but it could be worse. The anachronistic representation of the interior using printed paper placed next to the windows may have seemed like a good idea and saved Corgi a few cents—but it didn't win over the boys. The paint job is well applied and reasonably durable. The wheels are well shaped and finished and roll very well. At the time, I bought this Mercedes-Benz Bus "España 82" as a memento of a particularly happy summer. And so it has remained in my garage, almost untouched, to this day. ●

O Verão de 1982 foi particularmente feliz. Para além dos habituais dias na praia, disputavam-se dois Campeonatos do Mundo de Futebol—um em Espanha e transmitido na televisão e o outro, em ponto pequeno, jogado por mim e pelos meus amigos graças à recente aquisição de um espantoso campo de Subbuteo—com bancadas e postes de iluminação! A minha equipa era a de Portugal. Depois de convencer todos os amigos de que nesta nossa realidade em ponto pequeno Portugal tinha chegado à fase final do Campeonato, os jogos começaram. A vontade de vencer era enorme, assim como a falta de jeito—nunca vi tantos dedos lesionados. Este Mercedes-Benz Bus "España 82" da Corgi foi a dada altura uma das várias peças de memorabilia futebolística que chegou às minhas mãos. Nesta miniatura, o molde é aceitável, apesar das falhas e da simplificação ou mesmo ausência de certos pormenores. Alguns dos vincos na carroçaria são manifestamente exagerados, os arcos das rodas ficam longe do desenho original e a representação das portas intriga-me. Quanto às proporções, notam-se bem os compromissos, sobretudo a compressão—mas podia ser pior. A anacrónica representação do interior por meio de papel impresso, colocado junto aos vidros, pode ter parecido uma boa ideia e poupado alguns cêntimos à Corgi—mas não ganhou admiradores entre os miúdos. A pintura é bem aplicada e razoavelmente resistente. As rodas são bem moldadas e acabadas e rolam muito bem. Na altura, comprei este Mercedes-Benz Bus "España 82" como memorabilia de um Verão particularmente feliz. E assim ficou na minha garagem, quase intocado, até hoje. ●
