Matchbox – Stake Truck

Scale model of a stake truck, the Stake Truck, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 4, included in the "Matchbox 1–75" series. It is made in England, between 1968 and 1969. Metal body painted in yellow; green plastic cargo box, crossbars with a wood texture. Metal base, unpainted. Cab windows represented in transparent green tinted plastic. No interior details in the cab. Black plastic wheels. With suspension. The nominal scale is 1:86 and the overall length is approximately 2.9 in. About 1.3 oz. This model represents a stake truck. The cab-chassis assembly is based on that of the Dodge 500 truck, introduced in 1964. Dodge 500 trucks could be equipped with Cummins "V6" or "V8" diesel engines, producing 130–170 hp (97–127 kW), or Perkins "L6" diesel engines, producing 120 hp (89 kW). The 3-axle version had payload capacities of 12 to 16 tons.

Common in the United States, I don't recall seeing "stake trucks" in Portugal. I don't even know if there's an equivalent expression here. Perhaps "camião de taipais altos", truck with high sides, but forgive me, professionals, I might be talking complete nonsense here. Regarding the Dodge 500 trucks (later Dodge K), I think I have a vague memory of seeing one or two near the port area of ​​Lisbon in the late seventies and not finding them particularly attractive, despite the cabs (I know this now) being designed in Italy by Ghia. On the contrary, I really like the miniature offered by Matchbox between 1967 and 1971, the last two years of which were fitted with "Superfast" wheels. The casting is of good quality, robust, well-proportioned and detailed, and the elaborate cab design is very well reproduced, as is the "DODGE" inscription. The unpainted metal base extends forward to form the bumper and, fitting into the cab through three openings, the grille and headlights. The paint is well applied and resistant. The cab has no interior details. The wheels are robust, have suspension, and roll well. The play value lies in the ample, well-molded cargo bed with the appropriate wood texture on the crossbars. For the boys, it was more than enough for "long days at work." As for the Dodge 500 truck cab design, it must have greatly pleased its creators, as we find it again in other references, in interesting combinations. ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em amarelo; caixa de carga em plástico verde, travessas com textura de madeira. Base em metal, sem pintura. Vidros da cabina representados em plástico transparente com tonalidade verde. Sem detalhes interiores na cabina. Rodas em plástico preto. Com suspensão. A escala nominal é 1:86 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 74 mm. Cerca de 36 g. Este modelo representa um camião. O conjunto cabina-chassis baseia-se no do camião Dodge 500, introduzido em 1965. Os camiões Dodge 500 podiam ser equipados com motores Cummins diesel "V6" ou "V8", de 130–170 hp (97–127 kW), ou Perkins diesel "L6", de 120 hp (89 kW). A versão com 3 eixos tinha capacidades de carga de 12 a 16 toneladas.

Comuns nos Estados Unidos, não me lembro de ver em Portugal "stake trucks". Nem sei mesmo se existe por aqui uma expressão equivalente a "stake truck", literalmente camião (com leito) de estacas. Talvez "camião de taipais altos", mas perdoem-me os profissionais, posso estar a dizer aqui um absoluto disparate. Quanto aos camiões Dodge 500 (depois, Dodge K), julgo ter uma vaga ideia de no final dos anos setenta ver um ou outro nas imediações da zona portuária de Lisboa e de não os achar particularmente apelativos, apesar das cabinas (sei-o hoje) desenhadas em Itália pela Ghia. Pelo contrário, gosto muito da miniatura proposta pela Matchbox entre 1967 e 1971, nos últimos dois anos já dotada de rodas "Superfast". O molde é de boa qualidade, robusto, bem proporcionado e detalhado, e o elaborado desenho da cabina é muito bem reproduzido, assim como a inscrição "DODGE". A base em metal, sem pintura, prolonga-se para a frente para formar o pára-choques e, encaixando na cabina por via de três aberturas, a grelha e os faróis. A pintura é bem aplicada e resistente. Cabina sem detalhes no interior. As rodas são robustas, possuem suspensão e rodam bem. O valor lúdico resume-se à ampla caixa de carga, bem moldada e com a adequada textura de madeira nas travessas. Para os miúdos, era mais do que o suficiente para "longos dias de trabalho". Quanto ao molde da cabina do camião Dodge 500, deve ter agradado bastante aos seus criadores, pois voltamos a encontrá-lo noutras referências, em interessantes combinações. ●
