Tomica – Neoplan Bus Skyliner
Scale model of a double-deck bus, the Neoplan Bus Skyliner, made by Tomica. This example is reference T18, included in the "Tomica T-Series" ¹. It is made in China, in the 1990s. Metal body painted in white, yellow and red, with printed details, including the inscription "SUNNY-TOURS" on the sides. Yellow plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic Interior details in red plastic on the lower floor and transparent plastic on the upper floor. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (1H). With suspension. License plate "TM792". The nominal scale is 1:154 and the overall length is approximately 3.1 in. About 1.5 oz. This model represents a double-deck bus used in tourist services, possibly based on a 1979 Neoplan Skyliner N122/3 with Japanese specifications, including right-hand drive and multiple emergency exits.
Reducing a bus to a toy model of about 3 inches without compromising its features and presence is a daring challenge. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don't. In the case of the Neoplan Bus Skyliner, Tomica couldn't manage it—even I, with a reasonable knowledge of buses, hesitated to confirm its identity. In this case, I have in my hands the T18 reference from the Tomica T-Series, made in China in the nineties, and the casting falls short of usual standards. The attempt to represent the main details is noticeable, but the proportions are defiant, and the stance, compromised by the use of oversized wheels, results in a caricatured look. The paint job is also below Tomica's usual standards, although the printed details are of good quality. The plastic base shows some details. At the front, it extends (exaggeratedly?) to form the bumper, grille, and headlights, and at the rear it projects out to form the other bumper. The interior is reasonably detailed, despite the transparent seats upstairs. The suspension is of good quality, and the wheels, well-molded and detailed, roll flawlessly. In this model, I believe the compromises were taken too far, to the point of almost losing the identity of the (rather impressive) full-size bus. But I'm sure that didn't matter to the children. The Neoplan Bus Skyliner was a colorful, attractive toy model that rolled like a Hot Wheels. More than enough for long hours of playtime. ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em branco, amarelo e vermelho, com detalhes impressos, incluindo a inscrição "SUNNY–TOURS" nas laterais. Base em plástico amarelo. Vidros representados em plástico transparente. Detalhes interiores em plástico vermelho no piso inferior e plástico transparente no piso superior. Rodas em plástico com detalhes "cromados" a simular as jantes (1H). Com suspensão. Matrícula "TM792". A escala nominal é 1:154 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 78 mm. Cerca de 42 g. Este modelo representa um autocarro de dois pisos utilizado em serviços turísticos, possivelmente o Neoplan Skyliner N122/3 com especificações japonesas, incluindo o volante à direita e várias saídas de emergência.
Reduzir um autocarro a um modelo-brinquedo com cerca de 76 mm, sem lhe comprometer as características e presença, é um desafio audacioso. Por vezes, consegue-se, outras vezes não. No caso do Neoplan Bus Skyliner, a Tomica não o conseguiu—até eu, com um razoável conhecimento de autocarros, hesitei em confirmar-lhe a identidade. Neste caso, tenho nas minhas mãos a referência T18 da Tomica T-Series, feita na China nos anos noventa, e o molde está aquém dos padrões habituais. É perceptível a tentativa de representar os principais detalhes, mas as proporções desafiam os sentidos, e a postura, comprometida pelo uso das rodas sobredimensionadas, resulta caricatural. A pintura, também ela, está aquém dos padrões habituais da Tomica, ainda que os detalhes impressos sejam de boa qualidade. A base em plástico mostra alguns detalhes. Na frente, prolonga-se (exageradamente?) para formar o pára-choques, a grelha e os faróis, e atrás sobressai para formar o outro pára-choques. O interior é razoavelmente detalhado, apesar dos assentos transparentes no piso superior. A suspensão de boa qualidade e as rodas, bem moldadas e detalhadas , rolam impecavelmente. Neste modelo, creio que os compromissos foram levados longe demais, ao ponto de quase se perder a identidade do autocarro em tamanho real. Mas tenho a certeza de que para os miúdos isso não tinha qualquer importância. O Neoplan Bus Skyliner era um modelo-brinquedo colorido, apelativo e rolava como um Hot Wheels. Mais do que o suficiente, para longas horas de brincadeira. ●
¹ I can't find any reference to the name of the series on the packaging. I assume that this is the low-cost series conventionally called "Tomica T-Series" ("T" for "Toy"), with the same characteristics as the "Pocket Cars" series (USA/Canada), but for distribution in Europe from the UK. As I don't know the official name, I usually refer to it as the "Tomica Europe" series. It includes several models from the "Tomica Foreign" series, but manufactured in China, sometimes with different finishes (as in this Neoplan Bus Skyliner) and/or simplified (as in the case of the Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL). ● Não encontro na embalagem qualquer referência ao nome da série. Presumo que se trata da série económica convencionalmente designada por "Tomica T-Series" ("T" de "Toy", brinquedo), com as mesmas características da série "Pocket Cars" (EUA/Canada), mas para distribuição na Europa a partir do Reino Unido. No desconhecimento do nome oficial, costumo designá-la por série "Tomica Europe". Inclui diversos modelos da série "Tomica Foreign", mas fabricados na China, por vezes com acabamentos diferentes (como neste Neoplan Bus Skyliner) e/ou simplificados (como no caso do Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL).
