Matchbox – Mack Dump Truck
Scale model of a dump truck, the Mack Dump Truck, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 28, included in the "Matchbox 1–75" series. It is made in England, in 1968 and 1969. Metal cab-chassis assembly painted orange; metal cargo box, also painted orange. Sub-base in unpainted metal. Cab windows represented in transparent green tinted plastic. No interior details in the cab. Detailed tires in black plastic, combined with yellow plastic rims. No suspension. Tilting cargo box, capable of holding the unloading position. The nominal scale is 1:118 and the overall length is approximately 2.7 in. About 1.8 oz. This model represents a heavy-duty dump truck, used in mining, stone extraction, and construction sites. The cab-chassis assembly is possibly based on that of the Mack M-20X truck, introduced in 1960.
As a kid, I loved simulating heavy industrial activities in my games. Activities like mining, quarrying, and construction. Unfortunately, adults didn't find much humor in the physical results of my projects, especially those involving quarrying and mining, projects that apparently affected the normal development of plants. For all intents and purposes, I had an excellent fleet of trucks ready for anything, like this powerful Mack Dump Truck, offered by Matchbox in 1968 and 1969 with "special" wheels and then, between 1970 and 1973, with "Superfast" wheels, and with a final run in 1977. I really liked this Mack Dump Truck for its robust appearance and functional dump bed, and of course, for the well-detailed tires that could be removed for cleaning and maintenance. The casting is of good quality, well-proportioned, and full of interesting details, such as the off-center cab, its access steps, the simulation of the dump bed's hydraulic arms, and the intricate structural reinforcements. In this model, the cab and chassis are cast into a single element, which also serves as the base and houses the rear axle. The unpainted metal sub-base houses the front axle and extends forward to form the massive bumpers and grille. Although thin in some areas, the paint is well applied and durable. The wheels are robust, but over time, the tires tend to become loose and cause a wobbly ride. Incidentally, it's a shame the base configuration didn't allow for the proper reproduction of dual wheels at the rear. In terms of play value, the spacious and functional cargo bed, capable of holding its unloading position, was a hit with the kids. Furthermore, this truck's genuine off-road capability allowed it to be driven over mud and sand without getting stuck. In the end, a good wash with water was all it took, and it was ready for new challenges. Mine didn't have an easy life, but it endured and has survived to this day—still with its four original tires! Which, let's face it, after so much work, is almost a miracle. ●

Este modelo representa um camião basculante pesado, utilizado em locais de mineração, extracção de pedra e construção. O conjunto cabina-chassis baseia-se possivelmente no do camião Mack M-20X, introduzido em 1960.
Em miúdo, adorava simular actividades industriais pesadas nas minhas brincadeiras. Actividades como mineração, extracção de pedra e construção. Infelizmente, os adultos não achavam grande piada aos resultados físicos dos meus projectos, sobretudo os de extracção de pedra e de mineração, projectos que aparentemente afectavam o normal desenvolvimento das plantas. Para todos os efeitos, tinha uma excelente frota de camiões dispostos a tudo, como este poderoso Mack Dump Truck, proposto pela Matchbox em 1968 e 1969 com rodas "especiais" e depois, entre 1970 e 1973, com rodas "Superfast", e com um derradeiro regresso em 1977. Gostava muito deste Mack Dump Truck, pelo seu aspecto robusto e pela caixa de carga funcional, e claro, pelos pneus bem detalhados e que se podiam remover para a devida limpeza e manutenção. O molde é de boa qualidade, bem proporcionado e pleno de interessantes detalhes, como a cabina descentrada, os seus degraus de acesso, a simulação dos braços hidráulicos da caixa de carga e os intricados reforços estruturais. Neste modelo, a cabina e o chassis são moldados num só elemento, que serve também de base e acomoda o eixo traseiro. A sub-base em metal sem pintura acomoda o eixo dianteiro e prolonga-se para a frente para formar os massivos pára-choques e grelha. Apesar de fina em algumas áreas, a pintura é bem aplicada e resistente. As rodas são robustas mas, com o tempo, os pneus tendem a ficar lassos e provocam um andamento desengonçado. A propósito, pena a configuração da base não ter permitido à retaguarda a devida reprodução do rodado duplo. Em termos de valor lúdico, a caixa de carga ampla e funcional e capaz de manter a posição de descarga era um sucesso entre os miúdos. Para mais, a genuína aptidão para todo-o-terreno deste camião permitia conduzi-lo sobre lama e areia sem ficar atascado. No fim, bastava uma boa lavagem com água e estava pronto para novos desafios. O meu não teve uma vida fácil, mas resistiu e chegou aos dias de hoje—ainda com os quatro pneus originais! O que é, convenhamos, depois de tanto trabalho, quase um milagre. ●

● Check it out on this video, retrieved from Mack Trucks Historical Museum, a nicely preserved 1963 Mack M-15X (smaller than the M-20X) flexing its muscles. Spoiler alert—although small by today's standards, still impressive.
