Tomica – Bugatti Coupe De Ville

Scale model of an automobile, the Bugatti Coupe De Ville, made by Tomica. This example is reference F46, included in the "Tomica Foreign" series. It is made in Japan, possibly in 1978. Metal body painted in blue, including the fenders and running boards. Cream decorative motifs simulated by two paper stickers, one on each side. Rear-mounted spare tire. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in beige plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. No suspension. The nominal scale is 1:80 and the overall length is approximately 3 in, including the spare tire projection. About 1 oz. This model represents the Bugatti Type 41 Royale chassis 41111. Sold in 1932 with an elegant body designed by Jean Bugatti, it is then known as the "Roadster Esders". Later, possibly in 1939, it receives this second body, designed by Henri Binder from Paris. It is in this form known as "Coupé de Ville Binder". The Type 41 has a colossal 12763 cm³, 275-300 bhp 8-cylinder (I8) engine. I am not aware of any attempt to confirm its top speed but, considering its attributes, this coupé de ville would certainly be able to exceed 100 mph – in spite of its weight of around 4 ½ tons. As a note of interest, from 1933, this engine will also equip the fast Bugatti autorails.

A Royale in the "3 inches" world is a rare thing. So, since I bought this example in 1980, I have always kept it with special devotion, despite some less positive aspects. When looking at the casting, I understand, for example, why they decided, in that position, to reproduce the decorative motifs by means of paper stickers – but the result is not very elegant. In my example, one of the stickers came misaligned out of the factory – just like the radiator shell – and for fear of damaging it with a possible realignment it has remained so for forty years. On the other hand, I do not understand the simulation of the rear window, whose adequate representation would give another charm to the rear of the model. To conclude, when analyzing the black and white photographs of the prototype, since 1939 there seem to be two or three paint schemes and, in my eyes, none seems to suggest the combination of blue and cream – but I may be wrong. This automobile, the Bugatti Coupe De Ville, is in my collection under the theme "French Vehicles". ●

Cerca de 28 g. Este modelo representa o chassis 41111 do Bugatti Type 41 Royale. Vendido em 1932 com uma elegante carroçaria desenhada por Jean Bugatti, é então conhecido por "Roadster Esders". Mais tarde, possivelmente em 1939, recebe esta segunda carroçaria, concebida por Henri Binder de Paris. É nesta forma conhecido como "Coupé de Ville Binder". O Type 41 dispõe de um colossal motor de 8 cilindros (L8) de 12763 cm³ e 275-300 bhp. Desconheço qualquer tentativa de lhe confirmar a velocidade máxima mas, considerando os seus atributos, este coupé de ville seria decerto capaz de exceder os 160 km/h – apesar do seu peso de cerca de 4 ½ toneladas. Como nota de interesse, partir de 1933, este motor irá também equipar os velozes autorails Bugatti.

Um Royale no mundo dos "3 polegadas" é uma coisa rara. Por isso, desde que comprei este exemplar em 1980, sempre o guardei com especial devoção, apesar de alguns aspectos menos positivos. Ao olhar para o molde compreendo, por exemplo, porque decidiram, naquela posição, reproduzir os motivos decorativos por meio de autocolantes em papel – mas o resultado é pouco elegante. No meu exemplar um dos autocolantes veio desalinhado de fábrica – assim como a máscara do radiador – e com receio de o danificar com um possível realinhamento, assim permanece há quarenta anos. Por outro lado, não compreendo a simulação do óculo traseiro, cuja adequada representação daria um outro encanto à retaguarda do modelo. A concluir, ao analisar as fotografias a preto e branco do protótipo, desde 1939 parecem existir dois ou três esquemas de pintura e, aos meus olhos, nenhum parece sugerir a combinação de azul e creme – mas posso estar errado. Este automóvel, o Bugatti Coupe De Ville, encontra-se na minha colecção sob o tema "Veículos Franceses". ●

Versions and color variants

I know of only two color variants – blue with cream decorative motifs and cream with brown fenders and running boards. Black or red bases. Beige, black or red interiors. Necessary corrections or additions to the above are welcome. ● Conheço apenas duas variantes de cor – azul com motivos decorativos em creme e creme com pára-lamas e estribos em castanho. Bases em preto ou vermelho. Interiores em bege, preto ou vermelho. Devidas correcções ou adições ao acima descrito são bem-vindas.
