Tyler's – Animales de la Selva


Miniatures of animal figures constituting the series "Animales de la Selva". This series of 30 miniatures appears in Spain possibly in the mid 1980s associated with the chewing gum brand Tyler's. The chewing gum is sold in a sachet, accompanied by a figurine. Monochrome plastic, various colors. No movable or removable parts. As expected, these figurines are not made to a constant scale and the relation of sizes is sometimes disconcerting—take for example the tiny camel. The height of the figurines varies between approximately 0.3 and 1.8 in. About >0.1 oz to 0.2 oz.These miniatures depict several wild animals and are possibly the reissue of the series "Fieras del Zoo" launched in 1967 and associated with the brand of chewing gum Dunkin. 

I don't remember these figurines being released in Portugal ¹, but out of mere curiosity I have been buying some of them at collectors' fairs over the years. They do not show excellent quality and the disparity in the presumed scales is disconcerting. But they have a certain charm, especially if contextualized in their time. And some collectors tell me that these figurines constitute the first series launched by Dunkin, the "Fieras del Zoo" which, due to its success, is later reissued by other brands, such as Tyler's in the "Animales de la Selva" series or Kellogg's in the "Super Safari" series offered in the Frosties cereals. It is perhaps time in my personal context to recognize their due value and to try to complete the series of nothing less than—30 figurines! And try not to mix examples of the different series... ●

Esta série de 30 miniaturas aparece em Espanha possivelmente em meados dos anos oitenta associada à marca de pastilhas elásticas Tyler's. A pastilha elástica é vendida dentro de uma saqueta, acompanhada por uma figurinha. Plástico monocromático, diversas cores. Sem peças móveis ou amovíveis. Como esperado, estas figurinhas não são feitas numa escala constante e a relação de tamanhos é por vezes desconcertante—tomemos como exemplo o minúsculo camelo. A altura das figurinhas varia entre aproximadamente 8 e 46 mm. Cerca de >2 a 5 g. Estas miniaturas representam diversos animais selvagens e são possivelmente a reedição da série "Fieras del Zoo" lançada em 1967 e associada à marca de pastilhas elásticas Dunkin. 

Não me lembro de estas figurinhas terem sido lançadas em Portugal ¹, mas por mera curiosidade fui comprando algumas delas em feiras de coleccionismo ao longo dos anos. Não evidenciam uma excelente qualidade e a disparidade das presumíveis escalas é desconcertante. Mas têm um certo encanto, especialmente se contextualizadas no seu tempo. E dizem-me alguns coleccionadores que estas figurinhas constituem a primeira série lançada pela Dunkin, a "Fieras del Zoo" que, mercê do seu sucesso, é depois reeditada por outras marcas, como a Tyler's na série "Animales de la Selva" ou a Kellogg's na série "Super Safari" oferecida nos cereais Frosties. Está talvez na hora de no meu contexto pessoal lhes reconhecer o devido valor e procurar completar a série de nada menos que—30 figurinhas! E tentar não misturar exemplares das diversas séries... ●


¹ It's certain that at some point Olá launches the "Jardim Zoológico" series. However, and as far as I can verify from contemporary advertisements in the press and on television, there are differences in some of the figurines, as well as the presence of two that I don't find in other series. Did the figurines shown in the advertisements correspond to those actually offered with the purchase of the ice creams? Does any reader have the complete "Jardim Zoológico" collection that could clarify this doubt? ● É certo que a dada altura a Olá lança a série "Jardim Zoológico". Todavia, e tanto quanto me é possível verificar em anúncios contemporâneos na imprensa e na televisão, existem diferenças em algumas das figurinhas, assim como a presença de duas que não encontro noutras séries. Terão as figurinhas mostradas nos anúncios correspondido àquelas efectivamente oferecidas na compra dos gelados? Terá algum leitor a colecção completa "Jardim Zoológico" que permita esclarecer esta dúvida?

Cleaning these little things

Soap, warm water and a toothbrush is all that I need to clean these plastic figurines. If necessary, toothpaste can help remove some ink marks, especially those left by felt-tip pens. Most of these plastic figurines are now fifty years old and I do not advise the use of aggressive cleaning solutions, such as bleach. ● Sabão, água morna e uma escova de dentes é tudo o que preciso para limpar estas figurinhas de plástico. Se necessário, a pasta dentífrica pode ajudar a remover algumas marcas de tinta, sobretudo as deixadas por canetas de feltro. A maioria destas figurinhas de plástico tem agora cinquenta anos e não aconselho o uso de soluções de limpeza agressivas, como a lixívia.

It is made in Germany (Western Germany), possibly in 1966. Metal body (pressed tinplate) lithographed in white, with black top and representation of various details. Metal (tinplate) base. Rajá – Colecção Espacial

Miniatures of human and alien figures constituting the series " Colecção Espacial ". This series of 16 miniatures appears in 1970 associated with the Rajá ice cream brand, which offers a figurine on each ice cream purchased. Monochrome plastic, various colors. Although the figurines themselves do not have movable or removable parts, two of them, offered separately, can be fitted together – the Capitão Roskoff and his Disco Volante. The height of the figurines varies between approximately 0.9 and 1.4 in. About 0.1 to 0.2 oz. These miniatures depict a group of astronauts, aliens and a smiling robot. A small flying vehicle used by one of the astronauts is also included. Two characters of the series are also available in larger sized figures.
