Tomica – Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
Scale model of an automobile, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, made by Tomica. This example is reference F21, included in the "Tomica Foreign" series. It is made in Japan, possibly in 1977. Metal body painted in white, with printed details on the sides. Decorative adhesive on the hood. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the windshield. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (2F). With suspension. Opening doors. License plate "GM". The nominal scale is 1:64 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 1.2 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1975 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe, equipped with the 350 cu in (5.7 L), 205 hp (153 kW) Chevrolet RPO L-82 "V8" engine.
When I saw this Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in the window of one of the toy stores in downtown Lisboa at the end of the seventies, I couldn't resist. At the time, I was enthusiastically listening to "Life In The Fast Lane" by the Eagles, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf or "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen and this car, with its exuberant "USA" decoration, had it all – and it was all I needed to impress my friends during the endless hours of play, after school. And it was a success, starting with its weight and suspension, which gave it impeccable "road behavior". Today, almost fifty years later, as I look at it meticulously in the palm of my hand, I can confirm that it is an excellent model – the proportions are correct, the casting is well defined and (except for slight imperfections) of good quality, as is the application of the printed details – the rear lights highlighted in red were a very rare personal touch. The sticker on the hood keeps the colors bright, without wear or yellowing and the doors continue to be properly aligned and working perfectly, as on the first day. In fact, when I open the door and look at the well-detailed interior, I feel like I'm back in the late seventies, when I imagined myself turning on the radio with my girlfriend and driving off down the road, hand in hand, listening to "Born to Run". In fact, that part has long since become reality. But I still need a Corvette Stingray – a bigger one. ●

Quando no final dos anos setenta vi este Chevrolet Corvette Stingray na montra de uma das casas de brinquedos na baixa de Lisboa, não resisti. Na altura, escutava com entusiasmo "Life In The Fast Lane" dos Eagles, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" de Meatloaf ou "Born to Run" de Bruce Springsteen e este carrinho, com uma exuberante decoração "USA", tinha tudo a ver – e era tudo o que precisava para impressionar os amigos nas intermináveis horas de brincadeira, depois da escola. E foi um sucesso, a começar pelo seu peso e suspensão, que lhe davam um irrepreensível "comportamento de estrada". Hoje, passados quase cinquenta anos, ao observá-lo meticulosamente sobre a palma da minha mão, confirmo que se trata de um excelente modelo – as proporções estão correctas, o molde é bem definido e (salvo ligeiras imperfeições) de boa qualidade, assim como a aplicação dos detalhes impressos – as luzes traseiras destacadas a vermelho foram um raríssimo toque pessoal. O próprio autocolante sobre o capot mantém as cores vivas, sem desgaste ou amarelecimento e as portas continuam devidamente alinhadas e a funcionar perfeitamente, como no primeiro dia. De facto, quando abro a porta e observo o interior bem detalhado, sinto-me a regressar ao final dos anos setenta, quando me imaginava a ligar o rádio ao lado da namorada e a arrancar estrada fora, de mão dada, a ouvirmos "Born to Run". De facto, essa parte há muito se tornou realidade. Mas falta-me ainda um Corvette Stingray – maior. ●
