Hot Wheels – '71 AMC Javelin AMX
Scale model of a race car, the '71 AMC Javelin AMX, made by Hot Wheels. This example is reference 2, included in the "2018 50th Anniversary Favorites" series. It is made in Thailand. Metal body painted in red and white, with printed details, including "50 Hot Wheels" anniversary signatures on the sides and hood. Metal base, unpainted, but apparently sealed with lacquer. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the rear window. Interior details in silver-colored plastic. Gray plastic rims (RR8SP), rubber tires. No suspension. The nominal scale is 1:64 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.8 oz. This model, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Hot Wheels, is based on a race car, the Sunoco Javelin, an AMC Javelin AMX (or SST?) prepared by Roger Penske Racing Enterprises for the 1971 "Trans-Am Championship", driven by Mark Donohue. In that season, Mark Donohue wins the Driver's Championship and AMC the manufacturers' title.
In the seventies, the muscular AMX Javelin in metallic green proposed by Matchbox (MB9) was love at first sight. Then came others, from various manufacturers, until the arrival of GreenLight's sublime interpretation – it's hard to do better than that. However, despite being primarily a toy car, the model proposed by Hot Wheels in the "2018 50th Anniversary Favorites" series is not far behind. The casting, apparently an evolution of the one used in the 2009 AMC Javelin AMX reference, does not compromise the proportions imagined by Dick Teague and is of good quality and well manufactured. The somewhat thick paint is well applied, as are the printed details. The base is remarkable for the amount of detail on the chassis (including the side exhausts) and for forming the complex front of the car – a challenge exceptionally overcome. On the front, the printed details are "the icing on the cake". The interior shows us the characteristic environment of a Trans-Am racing car, dominated by the safety structure – shame about the steering wheel, too simplified. The RR8SP wheels with their nicely shaped grey rims are a natural choice and roll well, helped by the model's 1.8 oz or so weight. In truth, the "2018 50th Anniversary Favorites" series didn't spark much interest in me, but when I saw this '71 AMC Javelin AMX, despite the hefty price tag, I didn't hesitate – I bought two. There are things that only the heart understands. ●

Nessa temporada, Mark Donohue vence o Campeonato de Pilotos e a AMC o título de fabricantes.
Nos anos setenta, o musculado AMX Javelin em verde metalizado proposto pela Matchbox (MB9) foi paixão à primeira vista. Depois, seguiram-se-lhe outros, de vários fabricantes, até à chegada da sublime interpretação da GreenLight – difícil fazer melhor. Todavia e apesar de primariamente um carrinho de brincar, o modelo proposto pela Hot Wheels na série "2018 50th Anniversary Favorites" não fica muito longe. O molde, aparentemente evolução daquele utilizado na referência AMC Javelin AMX de 2009, não desvirtua as proporções imaginadas por Dick Teague e é de boa qualidade e bem fabricado. A pintura, algo espessa, é bem aplicada, assim como os detalhes impressos. A base é notável, pela quantidade de detalhes no chassis (incluindo os escapes laterais) e por formar a complexa frente do carro – um desafio excepcionalmente ultrapassado. Na frente, os detalhes impressos são "a cereja no topo do bolo". O interior mostra-nos o característico ambiente de um carro de corrida Trans-Am, dominado pela estrutura de segurança – pena o volante, demasiado simplificado. As rodas RR8SP com as jantes em cinzento, bem moldadas, são uma escolha natural e rolam bem, ajudadas pelos cerca de 52 g do modelo. Em boa verdade, a série "2018 50th Anniversary Favorites" não me suscitou grande interesse, mas ao ver este '71 AMC Javelin AMX, apesar do preço salgado, não hesitei – comprei dois. Há coisas que só o coração compreende. ●

How much?
Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described.
