Tomica – Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
Scale model of an automobile, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ¹, made by Tomica. This example is reference F19, included in the "Tomica Foreign" series. It is made in Japan, possibly in 1980. Metal body painted in silver. Metal base, unpainted. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in red plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (2F). With suspension. Opening doors. License plate "BENZ". The nominal scale is 1:63 and the overall length is approximately 2.9 in. About 1.4 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, equipped with the 182.8 cu in (2996 cm³), 243 hp (179 kW) Mercedes-Benz M198 "L6" engine. Top speed around 163 mph.
Perhaps the proportions and stance of this little Mercedes-Benz 300 SL made by Tomica are not the best. Even so, when I saw it in the early eighties, I didn't hesitate to buy it. To my eyes, this 300 SL seemed too tall and narrow, even chubby, but the amazing functional "gull-wing" doors made up for it all – and it was one of my favorite cars. For all intents and purposes, the casting is of excellent quality and reproduces all the main details well, including the subtle arch of the "eyebrows" over the wheel arches. The doors open and stay open if necessary. The interior is reasonably detailed, with the gear lever on the console and the rear-view mirror sketched on the dashboard. The suspension, curiously stiffer than normal in a Tomica, compromised "comfort", but allowed this "Gullwing" to "fly" on the roads imagined on the carpet. I liked this car a lot, even more than other larger ones, like the one made by Solido, which allowed you to see the engine, but only opened one door, on the driver's side – while this Tomica, although smaller, opened both doors. Today, as I carefully prepare it for the photos, I am amazed that it has withstood so many hours of enthusiastic "driving," abuse and play, almost unscathed. I smile. I'm glad it held out. ●

Talvez as proporções e a postura deste pequeno Mercedes-Benz 300 SL feito pela Tomica não sejam as melhores. Mesmo assim, quando o vi no início dos anos oitenta, não hesitei em adquiri-lo. Aos meus olhos, este 300 SL parecia demasiado alto e estreito, até gordinho, mas as assombrosas portas "asa-de-gaivota" funcionais desculpavam tudo – e era um dos meus automóveis favoritos. Para todos os efeitos, o molde é de excelente qualidade e reproduz bem todos os principais detalhes, inclusive o subtil arqueamento das "sobrancelhas" sobre as cavas das rodas. As portas abrem e ficam abertas se necessário. O interior é razoavelmente detalhado, com a alavanca de mudanças na consola e o espelho retrovisor esboçado sobre o tablier. A suspensão, curiosamente mais rígida do que o habitual num Tomica, comprometia o "conforto", mas permitia a este "Asa-de-Gaivota" "voar" nas estradas imaginadas sobre a carpete. Gostava bastante deste carrinho, até mais do que de outros maiores, como o feito pela Solido, que permitia ver o motor, mas abria apenas uma porta, no lado do condutor – ao passo que este Tomica, apesar de mais pequeno, abria as duas portas. Hoje, enquanto o preparo cuidadosamente para as fotografias, surpreende-me que tenha resistido quase incólume a tantas horas de entusiástica "condução", de abuso e brincadeira. Sorrio. Fico feliz que tenha resistido. ●
