Tomica – Toyota Century

Scale model of an automobile, the Toyota Century, made by Tomica. This example is reference 45, included in the "Tomica Domestic" series. It is made in Japan, possibly in the early 1980s ¹. Metal body painted in black. Metal base, unpainted. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in white plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (1H). With suspension. Opening doors. License plate "Century". The nominal scale is 1:66 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.5 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1967 Toyota Century (VG20-B) sedan, equipped with the 181.9 cu in (2981 cm³), 150 hp (110 kW) Toyota 3V "V8" engine. Top speed around 106 mph. 

Many people consider the Toyota Century to be the Japanese Rolls-Royce. As for me, I prefer to consider it what it literally is – a Toyota, the ultimate Toyota. The mastery of the manufacturer taken to the highest limits of quality, ingenuity and idiosyncrasy. The sensible and discreet embodiment of comfort. Of course, in the early eighties, when I acquired the scale model made by Tomica, I had no precise idea of any of this, but I felt right away that it was a very special car. In this model, the proportions are essentially correct, the castings are excellent and well finished, even reproducing the emblems and signatures in relief, and the union between the body and the base is perfect. Just look at the front to understand the care taken in the assembly of all the elements. The paintwork is well applied and durable. After forty years, the doors still work perfectly and when you open them you are surprised by a reasonably detailed interior, evoking the comfort of the original – unfortunately the dashboard is not reproduced, but the graceful steering wheel makes up for its absence. Reasonably heavy and with good suspension, this model offered excellent "road behavior" and I particularly enjoyed "driving" it. As for the slightly cambered rear wheels, they remind me that it wasn't a good idea to leave cars parked around the house, especially in busy areas. In the early seventies, I believe Tomica designed and manufactured this little Toyota Century with particular commitment and dedication – with heart. The result is a worthy tribute to the original. ●

Este modelo representa um automóvel, possivelmente um Toyota Century (VG20-B) sedan de 1967, equipado com o motor Toyota 3V "V8" de 181.9 cu in (2981 cm³) e 150 hp (110 kW). Velocidade máxima na ordem dos 170 km/h.

Muitas pessoas consideram o Toyota Century o Rolls-Royce japonês. Quanto a mim, prefiro considerá-lo como aquilo que ele literalmente é – um Toyota, o supremo Toyota. A maestria do fabricante levada aos limites superiores da qualidade, do engenho e da idiossincrasia. A sensata e discreta materialização do conforto. Claro que no início dos anos oitenta, quando adquiri o modelo à escala feito pela Tomica, não tinha a noção precisa de nada disto, mas senti logo ali que se tratava de um automóvel muito especial. Neste modelo, as proporções estão essencialmente correctas, os moldes são excelentes e bem acabados, até reproduzindo em relevo os emblemas e assinaturas, e a união entre a carroçaria e a base é perfeita. Basta observar a frente para compreender o cuidado na montagem de todos os elementos. A pintura é bem aplicada e resistente. Ao fim de quarenta anos, as portas continuam a funcionar perfeitamente e ao abri-las somos surpreendidos por um interior razoavelmente detalhado, a evocar o conforto do original – infelizmente o tablier não é reproduzido, mas o gracioso volante compensa a sua falta. Razoavelmente pesado e com uma boa suspensão, este modelo oferecia um excelente "comportamento de estrada" e gostava particularmente de o "conduzir". Quanto às rodas traseiras ligeiramente arqueadas, recordam-me que não era boa ideia deixar os carrinhos estacionados pela casa, sobretudo em zonas movimentadas. No início dos anos setenta, acredito que a Tomica tenha concebido e fabricado este pequeno Toyota Century com particular empenho e dedicação – com coração. O resultado é um digno tributo ao original. ●
