Welly – Cadillac Seville
Scale model of an automobile, the Cadillac Seville ¹, made by Welly. This example is reference 101B ², included in the "Racers" series. It is made in Hong Kong, possibly in the 1990s. Metal body painted in silver featuring a glitter effect, with printed details (racing stripes) on the hood and top. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in white plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. Opening doors. The nominal scale is 1:69 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 0.9 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly a 1980 Cadillac Seville Elegante sedan, equipped with the 368.4 cu in (6.0 L), 145 hp (108 kW) Cadillac L61 EFi "V8" engine..
Some time ago, when analyzing a Welly model, I mentioned that "When the starting point is a Tomica model from the seventies, there is not much that can go wrong." But – I now add – when it does go wrong, the result can be disconcerting. Not because of the expected simplification of the molds (body and base) and finishes – but rather, in this case, because of the inadequate paint and decoration. Instead of choosing any of the colors expected of a luxurious American sedan from the eighties and creating a distinct variant of the Cadillac Seville, Welly paints it in silver with an expressive glitter effect and decorates it with red and white stripes on the hood and roof. I believe that not even the exuberant Liberace would go that far. Of course, proposing the sumptuous Cadillac Seville in a series entitled "Racers" already hinted that something was about to go wrong. But there was no need to embarrass the distinguished creature. ●

Há tempos, ao analisar um modelo da Welly, referi que – «Quando o ponto de partida é um modelo Tomica dos anos setenta, não há muito que possa correr mal.» Mas – acrescento agora – quando corre mal, o resultado pode desnortear-nos. Não pela esperada simplificação dos moldes (carroçaria e base) e dos acabamentos – mas sim, neste caso, pela desadequada pintura e decoração. Em vez de escolher qualquer uma das cores esperadas num luxuoso sedan americano dos anos oitenta e criar uma distinta variante do Cadillac Seville, a Welly aplica-lhe uma pintura em prateado com um expressivo efeito de purpurina e decora-o com faixas em vermelho e branco sobre o capot e o tejadilho. Creio que nem o exuberante Liberace iria tão longe. Claro que propor o sumptuoso Cadillac Seville numa série intitulada de "Racers" (carros de corrida) já sugeria que algo estava prestes a correr mal. Mas não era preciso embaraçar a distinta criatura. ●

How much?
Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case and in Portugal, I will pay up to €3 for a Cadillac Seville made by Welly, loose and in good condition, or up to €5 if boxed and in perfect condition. ●
