Welly – Renault 4
Scale model of an automobile, the Renault 4, made by Welly. This example is reference 52362. It is made in China, possibly in 2016. In Portugal, this model was available in the "Carros Miniatura II" series, promoted by Cofina in 2016–2017. When purchasing the newspapers "Correio da Manhã" or "Record", the reader could additionally purchase the model ¹. Metal body painted in white ², with printed details. Black plastic sunroof, closed. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels, tires with detailed tread and rims with metallic gray finish. No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:49 and the overall length is approximately 2.9 in. About 1.2 oz. This model represents an automobile, possibly the 1961 Renault 4 Limousine Découvrable, equipped with 747 cm³, 27.6 hp (20.3 kW) Renault "L4" engine. Top speed around 62 mph.
When I see the ugliness of contemporary automotive production, especially in the last decade, these grotesquely bloated, aseptic, and fragile digital potatoes, I'm reminded of the times when even ugly (or less beautiful) cars had their charm. Cars that won us over with their pragmatism, their simplicity, the singular ingenuity of their technical and aesthetic solutions—their personality. They were cars that didn't pretend to be more than they were, that had obvious limitations, but within their capabilities gave everything they had to avoid disappointing us, provided we knew how to handle them—and this complicity, this loyalty marked us for life. The Renault 4 was one of those cars. In this model and scale, I believe Welly tried its best—and it didn't fall far short. The casting is of good quality, the proportions and stance are good, and the manufacturer's commitment to adding as many details as possible is noticeable, including the exterior door hinges—but it's a pity they forgot the side turn signals. The mold for the sunroof is impeccable. Regarding the paint job, it leaves something to be desired, and I can't tell if the perceptible yellowing is intentional or just paint degradation; the printed details are acceptable. At the front, the well-molded "chrome" grille is a nice detail, but it came stubbornly misaligned on my example. In this scale, the interior details are excellent. I particularly like the steering wheel and gearshift lever, as well as the open sliding windows on the front doors. The wheels, one of the standard Welly types, are well-molded and detailed, but refuse to roll properly. Like the Renault 4, this little creature is far from perfect, but it does its best to get there, and that's part of its charm. For all intents and purposes, and for anyone who wants to, it's easy to improve. For me, apart from the paint job, it's fine as it is. ●

Na compra dos jornais "Correio da Manhã" ou "Record" o leitor podia comprar adicionalmente o modelo ¹. Carroçaria em metal pintada em branco ², com detalhes impressos. Tecto solar (ou de abrir) em plástico preto, fechado. Base em plástico preto. Vidros representados em plástico transparente. Detalhes interiores em plástico preto. Rodas em plástico, pneus com piso detalhado e jantes com acabamento em cinzento metalizado. Sem suspensão. A escala nominal parece ser à volta de 1:49 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 74 mm. Cerca de 34 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, possivelmente o Renault 4 Limousine Découvrable de 1961, equipado com o motor Renault "L4" de 747 cm³ e 27,6 hp (20,3 kW). Velocidade máxima na ordem dos 100 km/h.
Quando me apercebo da feiura da produção automóvel contemporânea, sobretudo da última década, destas batatas digitais grotescamente inchadas, assépticas e frágeis, recordo-me dos tempos em que até os automóveis feios (ou menos bonitos) tinham o seu encanto. Automóveis que nos conquistavam pelo seu pragmatismo, pela sua simplicidade, pela singular genialidade das suas soluções técnicas e estéticas—pela sua personalidade. Eram automóveis que não pretendiam ser mais do que aquilo que eram, que tinham limitações evidentes, mas que dentro das suas capacidades davam tudo o que tinham para não nos desiludirem, desde que soubéssemos lidar com eles—e essa cumplicidade, essa lealdade marcava-nos para toda a vida. O Renault 4 era um desses automóveis. Neste modelo e nesta escala, acredito que a Welly tenha tentado fazer o seu melhor—e não ficou longe de o conseguir. O molde é de boa qualidade, as proporções e a postura são boas e nota-se o empenho do fabricante em adicionar o máximo de detalhes, incluindo as dobradiças exteriores das portas—mas é pena o esquecimento das luzes laterais de mudança de direcção. O molde do tecto solar é irrepreensível. Quanto à pintura, deixa a desejar e não consigo compreender se o perceptível amarelecimento é intencional ou degradação da tinta; os detalhes impressos são aceitáveis. Na frente, a grelha "cromada", bem moldada, é um bom pormenor, mas veio teimosamente desalinhada no meu exemplar. A esta escala, os detalhes interiores são excelentes. Gosto sobretudo do volante e da alavanca de velocidades, assim como dos vidros de correr abertos nas portas da frente. As rodas, um dos tipos padrão da Welly, são bem moldadas e detalhadas, mas recusam correrias. Tal como o Renault 4, esta pequena criatura está longe de ser perfeita, mas faz o possível para lá chegar e tem nisso parte do seu encanto. Para todos os efeitos e para quem o desejar, é fácil melhorá-la. Por mim, à parte a pintura, está bem assim. ●
