Matchbox – Freeway Gas Tanker "Burmah"

As far as I know, all versions of the Freeway Gas Tanker came with "Maltese Cross" wheels on the tractor and "5-Spoke Square" wheels on the trailer. No suspension. The tractor has a small round spike that fits into the base of the trailer. License plate "DWC 447L". A fictional vehicle without a precise scale, but associated with the context of "3-inch" models ¹. The overall length is approximately 3.1 in. About 1.7 oz. This model represents a fictional articulated tank truck in a futuristic style, operated by Burmah Oil.
As a kid, my relationship with these small Matchbox articulated trucks was interesting—I liked their futuristic look and maneuvering them, especially with two trailers, but given the small cab and the very short wheelbase of the tractor, maintaining a straight line along the freeways I imagined on the carpets was always a challenge—and the cause of a few accidents. Even so, I remember that this tank truck was reasonably popular among kids. The "Burmah" variant secured its place in the catalog between 1973 and 1978, and the last variant, with the attractive "BP" livery, was offered in 1981. The casting of this Freeway Gas Tanker is of good quality, reasonably robust, and shows interesting details, especially on the trailer. The paint job is also of good quality and resistant. The dense purple hue on the windows conveniently hides the absence of interior details. The wheels are robust and, even without suspension, roll well. In terms of play value, the concept of a small articulated truck was irresistible to kids, especially the "Two Pack" version, which allowed for the addition of a second trailer. My fleet was taken out of service a long time ago. But the audacious design of the Freeway Gas Tanker continued to populate my fantasies of an amazing and optimistic world where I would soon live. Reality proved to be different. ●

Em miúdo, a minha relação com estes pequenos camiões articulados da Matchbox era interessante—gostava do seu aspecto futurista e de os manobrar, sobretudo com dois atrelados, mas, dada a pequena cabina e a curtíssima distância entre eixos do tractor, manter uma linha recta ao longo das auto-estradas imaginadas sobre os tapetes era sempre um desafio—e motivo de alguns acidentes. Mesmo assim, lembro-me que este camião-cisterna era razoavelmente popular entre os miúdos. A variante "Burmah" garantiu a sua presença no catálogo entre 1973 e 1978, e a última variante, com a apelativa decoração "BP", foi proposta em 1981. O molde deste Freeway Gas Tanker é de boa qualidade, razoavelmente robusto e mostrando detalhes interessantes, sobretudo no atrelado. A pintura é também de boa qualidade e resistente. A densa tonalidade púrpura nos vidros oculta convenientemente a ausência de detalhes interiores. As rodas são robustas e, mesmo sem suspensão, rolam bem. Em termos de valor lúdico, o conceito de um pequeno camião articulado era irresistível para os miúdos, sobretudo na versão "Two Pack", que permitia adicionar um segundo atrelado. A minha frota foi retirada de serviço há muito tempo. Mas o audacioso desenho do Freeway Gas Tanker continuou a povoar as minhas fantasias de um mundo espantoso e optimista onde em breve haveria de viver. A realidade provou ser diferente. ●
