Best Box – T-Ford 1919
Scale model of an automobile, the T-Ford 1919, made by Best Box ¹. This example is reference 2506, included in the "Best Box Series" series. It is made in Holland, in the 1960s ². Metal body painted gray. The lower part of the body forms the seats, hood, fenders, and running boards, and also serves as the base of the model. The top side is painted red; the bottom side is unpainted. Windshield and windows without glazing. The only interior detail is the front seats, made of metal painted red. Plastic tires reproducing the shoulder blocks, unpainted metal spoked wheels. No suspension. The nominal scale is 1:62 and the overall length (including wheel projections) is approximately 2.2 in. About 1.4 oz. This model represents an automobile, the 1919 Ford Model T sedan, equipped with the 176.7 cu in (2896 cm³), 20 hp (15 kW) Ford "L4" engine. Top speed around 40–45 mph.
In Best Box's 1919 T-Ford models, the adoption of a modular concept is evident from the outset, the intention to combine the base (representing the interior, hood, fenders, and running boards in a single element) with various body styles, sometimes resulting in peculiar compromises. For example, in one of the pickup truck versions, the roof is so low that we doubt anyone could actually drive it. Conversely, in this sedan version, and despite the dimensions seeming essentially correct, the roof gives the impression of being too high, especially at the front, due to the exaggerated distance to the firewall. For all intents and purposes, and despite the obvious technical limitations, the casting is acceptable, the proportions and stance are good, even if the wheels are very small and the tires very thick, and, for 1919, with visionary off-road capabilities. These 1919 T-Ford models produced by Best Box do not have windows, and blatantly display the interior reduced to the front seats and a post approximately in the middle of the cabin (fixing the body to the base) ³. Regarding the paint job, it went reasonably well on this example. At the front, an interesting technical solution: in a single piece, which also houses the front axle, we see the headlights, the grille, the robust starter crank, and suspension components. Very good. As an interesting note, it's possible to find the sedan (and the coupe) with or without the charming spare tire mounted on the rear. In short, this is a model that wins us over more with its personality than with the perfection of its body, its details, and its finish. It's about sixty years old and is a poignant legacy of its time. Like the children who saw it new, perhaps in a toy store window, I can't resist its appeal. It's a privilege to take care of it, to hold it safely in the palm of my hand. Until one day I'm left behind and it continues its long and amazing journey. ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em cinzento. A parte inferior da carroçaria forma os assentos, o capot, os pára lamas e os estribos e funciona também como base do modelo. O lado de cima vem pintado de vermelho; o lado de baixo não vem pintado. Pára-brisas e janelas desprovidas de vidros. O único detalhe interior são os assentos da frente, em metal pintado de vermelho. Pneus em plástico reproduzindo os blocos do ombro, jantes raiadas em metal, sem pintura. Sem suspensão. A escala nominal é 1:62 e o comprimento total (incluindo as projecções das rodas) é de aproximadamente 56 mm. Cerca de 40 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, o Ford Model T sedan de 1919, equipado com o motor Ford "L4" de 2896 cm³ e 20 hp (15 kW). Velocidade máxima na ordem dos 64–72 km/h.
Nos modelos T-Ford 1919 da Best Box, é evidente desde o princípio a adopção de um conceito modular, a intenção de combinar a base (representando num só elemento o interior, o capot, os pára-lamas e os estribos) com diversas carroçarias, o que resultará por vezes em peculiares compromissos. Como numa das versões camioneta, onde o tejadilho fica tão baixo que duvidamos que alguém consiga assumir o posto de condução. Pelo contrário, nesta versão sedan, e apesar das dimensões me parecerem essencialmente correctas, o tejadilho dá-nos a impressão de ficar demasiado alto, sobretudo à frente, pela distância exagerada à antepara do capot. Para todos os efeitos e apesar das evidentes limitações técnicas, o molde é aceitável, as proporções e a postura são boas, mesmo que as rodas sejam demasiado pequenas e os pneus demasiado grossos e, para 1919, com visionárias características todo-o-terreno. Estes T-Ford 1919 produzidos pela Best Box não recebem vidros, e mostram despudoradamente o interior reduzido aos assentos dianteiros e a um poste sensivelmente a meio do habitáculo (fixando a carroçaria à base) ³. Quanto à pintura, correu razoavelmente bem neste exemplar. Na frente, uma interessante solução técnica: numa só peça, que acomoda também o eixo dianteiro, vemos os faróis, a grelha, a robusta manivela de arranque, e elementos da suspensão. Muito bom. Como nota de interesse, é possível encontrar o sedan (e o coupe) com ou sem o encantador pneu sobresselente montado à retaguarda. Em suma, este é um modelo que nos conquista mais pela sua personalidade do que pela perfeição do seu corpo, dos seus detalhes e acabamento. Tem cerca de sessenta anos e é um comovente legado do seu tempo. Como as crianças que o viram novo, talvez na montra de uma loja de brinquedos, não resisto ao seu apelo. É um privilégio cuidar dele, aconchegá-lo em segurança na palma da minha mão. Até que um dia eu fique para trás e ele continue o seu longo e espantoso caminho. ●
