Matchbox – Dodge Crane Truck
Scale model of a crane truck, the Dodge Crane Truck, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 63, included in the "Matchbox 1–75" series. It is made in England, in 1968 and 1969. Metal cab-platform assembly painted yellow; metal crane painted yellow. Sub-base (under the cab) in black plastic. Windows of the truck and crane cabs represented in transparent green tinted plastic. No interior details in the cabs. Black plastic wheels. No suspension. Crane with rotating motion; pivoting hook. The nominal scale is 1:86 and the overall length is approximately 2.7 in, or 3 in, including crane projections. About 1.3 oz. This model represents a crane truck. The cab-chassis assembly is based on that of the Dodge 500 truck, introduced in 1964. Dodge 500 trucks could be equipped with Cummins "V6" or "V8" diesel engines, producing 130–170 hp (97–127 kW), or Perkins "L6" diesel engines, producing 120 hp (89 kW). The 6x4 version had payload capacities of 12 to 16 tons. I don't know if the Dodge 500 has ever been configured as a crane truck.
In my childhood games, the need for a crane truck was minimal. Especially since the most desired functionality, the boom capable of lifting and allowing loading and unloading, didn't exist, as was the case here with this truck whose crane was limited to a rotating movement. Even so, I had two of these Dodge Crane Trucks in my fleet, a reference that remained in the Matchbox catalog between 1968 and 1972, updated with "Superfast" wheels from 1970 onwards. The casting is of good quality, robust, well-proportioned and detailed. The cab, shared with other models, is combined here with a platform that serves as a base (accommodating the rear axles) and where the robust crane rests. A black plastic sub-base (under the cab) extends forward to form the bumper, grille and headlights. The application of the yellow paint is reasonable and suitable for demanding outdoor play. Neither the truck nor the crane cab feature interior details. The wheels are sturdy, but in my example they fulfill their function with some effort. In terms of play value, the kids were entitled to the rotating crane with a pivoting hook, but without the much-desired lifting capacity. Of course, nothing that their fertile imaginations couldn't overcome. ●

Nas minhas brincadeiras de miúdo, a necessidade de um camião-grua era muito reduzida. Sobretudo, quando a funcionalidade mais pretendida, a lança com capacidade para se elevar e permitir cargas e descargas, não existia, como era aqui, neste camião com a grua limitada a um movimento rotativo. Ainda assim, tinha na minha frota dois destes Dodge Crane Truck, uma referência se manteve no catálogo da Matchbox entre 1968 em 1972, actualizada com rodas "Superfast" a partir de 1970. O molde é de boa qualidade, robusto, bem proporcionado e detalhado. A cabina, partilhada com outros modelos, é aqui combinada com uma plataforma que serve como base (acomodando os eixos traseiros) e onde assenta a robusta grua. Uma sub-base em plástico preto (sob a cabina) prolonga-se para a frente para formar o pára-choques, a grelha e os faróis. A aplicação da pintura amarela é razoável e adequada às exigentes brincadeiras no exterior. Nenhuma das cabinas, do camião e da grua, possui detalhes no seu interior. As rodas são robustas, mas no meu exemplar cumprem com algum esforço a sua função. Em termos de valor lúdico, os miúdos tinham direito à grua rotativa com um gancho pivotante, mas sem a tão pretendida capacidade de elevação. Bem entendido, nada que as suas férteis imaginações não conseguissem ultrapassar. ●
