Matchbox – Refuse Truck
Scale model of a garbage truck, the Refuse Truck, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 36, included in the "1–75 Superfast" series. It is made in England, in 1981. Metal body painted in dark metallic red, garbage collection module in yellow plastic. Metal base, painted in aluminum. Cab windows represented in transparent orange tinted plastic. No interior details in the cab. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. No suspension. The garbage collection module features moving elements that allow for "automatic" garbage disposal, activated by sliding side flaps. License plate "GSK 77T". The nominal scale is 1:86 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.8 oz. This model represents a garbage truck equipped with the Heil Colectomatic system, which could be mounted on chassis from various manufacturers. In this case, the chassis-cab assembly appears to be based on that of the 1975 Berliet GR 260 or 280 truck.
Showing off a model with ingenious mechanisms and functionalities to your friends was always a feat for any kid. And this Refuse Truck didn't disappoint. Certainly due to its high sales figures, it remained in the catalog for over twenty years, between 1981 and 2002, with a final version in 2006. Presumably based on a Berliet GR truck and equipped with a Heil Colectomatic garbage collection module, the model proposed by Matchbox is quite appealing. The casting is very good, very robust, well-proportioned and detailed—I suppose the lack of mention of the chassis manufacturer is deliberate. The metal base, painted in aluminum, extends forward and fits into the cab forming the grille. Among other details, the two headlights integrated into the bumper suggest that we are looking at a Berliet KB 2400 cab with the design revised in 1975. The paint job is very good. As for the interior of the cab, once again the tinted windows attempt to disguise the absence of any details. The wheels are robust and turn well, but the poor axle mounting causes disconcerting lateral oscillation. In terms of play value, the garbage collection module, well-detailed and reasonably robust, with moving elements allowing for "automatic" garbage unloading activated by sliding side flaps, was a hit with the kids, entertaining them for hours on end. Because of this model and two others, from Husky and Majorette, I ended up assembling an interesting fleet of garbage trucks over the years. All of them very appealing and almost always with ingenious mechanisms and functionalities. ●

A escala nominal é 1:86 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 77 mm. Cerca de 51 g. Este modelo representa um camião de recolha de lixo equipado com o sistema Heil Colectomatic, que podia ser montado em chassis de diversos fabricantes. Neste caso, o conjunto chassis-cabina parece basear-se no do camião Berliet GR 260 ou 280 de 1975.
Chegar junto dos amigos e retirar do bolso um modelo com engenhosos mecanismos e funcionalidades era sempre uma mais-valia para qualquer miúdo. E este Refuse Truck não desapontava. Decerto pelo bom número de vendas, permanece no catálogo por mais de vinte anos, entre 1981 e 2002, com uma derradeira versão em 2006. Presumivelmente baseado num camião Berliet GR e dotado de um módulo de recolha de lixo Heil Colectomatic, o modelo proposto pela Matchbox é bastante apelativo. O molde é muito bom, muito robusto, bem proporcionado e detalhado—suponho que a falta da menção ao fabricante do chassis seja deliberada. A base em metal, pintada em alumínio, prolonga-se para a frente e encaixa na cabina formando a grelha. Entre outros detalhes, os dois faróis integrados no pára-choques sugerem que estamos na presença de uma cabina Berliet KB 2400 com o desenho revisto em 1975. A aplicação da pintura é muito boa. Quanto ao interior da cabina, mais uma vez os vidros fumados procuram dissimular a ausência de quaisquer detalhes. As rodas são robustas e rodam bem, mas o deficiente assentamento dos eixos provoca uma desconcertante oscilação lateral. Em termos de valor lúdico, o módulo para recolha de lixo, bem detalhado e razoavelmente robusto, com elementos móveis a permitir a descarga "automática" do lixo, accionada por patilhas laterais deslizantes, era um sucesso entre os miúdos, entretendo-os horas a fio. Por causa deste modelo e de outros dois, da Husky e da Majorette, acabei por reunir ao longo dos anos uma interessante frota de camiões de recolha de lixo. Todos eles muito apelativos e quase sempre com engenhosos mecanismos e funcionalidades. ●

In terms of play value, the Heil Colectomatic module of the Refuse Truck proposed by Matchbox in 1981 features moving elements that allow for the "automatic" unloading of garbage, activated by the sliding movement of side flaps. An interesting mechanism, capable of withstanding long hours of "service". As a point of interest, the Ford Transcontinental truck is often mentioned as the starting point for this miniature. Personally, I believe the starting point is the Berliet GR (1975 facelift) 260 or 280 4x2, whose excellent KB 2400 (1969) cab is, at some point, adapted and reused in the Ford Transcontinental (1975) and Renault R (1980) series. But I could be wrong. ●
Em termos de valor lúdico, o módulo Heil Colectomatic do Refuse Truck proposto pela Matchbox em 1981 possui elementos móveis que permitem a descarga "automática" do lixo, accionada pelo movimento deslizante de patilhas laterais. Um mecanismo interessante, capaz de resistir a longas horas de "serviço". Como nota de interesse, é habitual ver mencionado o camião Ford Transcontinental como ponto de partida para esta miniatura. Pessoalmente, considero que o ponto de partida é o Berliet GR ("facelift" de 1975) 260 ou 280 4x2, cuja excelente cabina KB 2400 (1969) é, a dada altura, adaptada e reutilizada nas séries Ford Transcontinental (1975) e Renault R (1980). Mas posso estar errado. ●
