Matchbox – Refuse Truck

Scale model of a garbage truck, the Refuse Truck, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 7, included in the "Matchbox" series. It is made in England, between 1967 and 1969. Metal body painted orange. Garbage collection module in gray plastic; rear "lid" ¹ painted in metallic gray. Metal base, unpainted. Cab windows represented in transparent green tinted plastic. No interior details in the cab. Black plastic wheels. No suspension. The garbage collection module has moving elements that allow for garbage disposal; by pulling up the front part of the module, the "lid" ¹ at the rear rises, allowing the garbage to be discharged by gravity. The nominal scale is 1:95 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.7 oz. This model represents a garbage truck. In this case, the chassis-cab assembly is based on that of the Ford D truck, introduced in 1965.

As a kid, I don't remember seeing Ford D garbage trucks—my memory leads me to Mercedes-Benz products. But in other roles, they were a familiar presence, with their distinctive white grilles, side-by-side with the peculiar Morris FG, the chubby Hanomag Kurier, or the spirited OM Cerbiatto. There were also many—many indeed—Bedford TJ and TK models. As for this Matchbox model of the Ford D garbage truck, it's quite appealing. The casting is very good, very robust, well-proportioned and detailed—the wheel axles are almost indestructible. In my eyes, the stance is perfect. The unpainted metal base extends forward and meticulously forms the truck's distinctive face. The paint application is very good. Inside the cab, as was common at that time, there are no details. The wheels are robust (but susceptible to breaking with certain types of impact) and in some examples roll surprisingly well. In terms of play value, the well-detailed and reasonably robust garbage collection module, with moving elements allowing for waste disposal, was much appreciated by kids. It's a shame that this Refuse Truck was only in the Matchbox catalog for four years, between 1967 and 1970, the last year already featuring "Superfast" wheels. Fortunately, its modern successor, introduced in 1981, more sophisticated and versatile, and even more attractive, represented this type of vehicle, the garbage trucks, well for over twenty years. Remarkable. ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em cor de laranja. Módulo para recolha de lixo em plástico cinzento; "tampa" ¹ à retaguarda pintada em cinzento metalizado. Base em metal, sem pintura. Vidros da cabina representados em plástico transparente com tonalidade verde. Sem detalhes interiores na cabina. Rodas em plástico preto. Sem suspensão. O módulo para recolha de lixo possui elementos móveis que permitem a descarga do lixo; ao puxar para cima a parte da frente do módulo, a "tampa" ¹ à retaguarda eleva-se, permitindo a descarga por gravidade do lixo.  A escala nominal é 1:95 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 75 mm. Cerca de 48 g. Este modelo representa um camião de recolha de lixo. Neste caso, o conjunto chassis-cabina baseia-se no do camião Ford D, introduzido em 1965. 

Em miúdo, não me lembro de alguma vez ter visto camiões de recolha de lixo Ford D—a memória remete-me para produtos Mercedes-Benz. Mas, noutras funções, eram uma presença familiar, com as suas distintivas grelhas brancas, lado a lado com os peculiares Morris FG, com os gordinhos Hanomag Kurier ou com os espevitados OM Cerbiatto. Havia também muitos—mesmo muitos—Bedford TJ e TK. Quanto a este modelo do camião Ford D em funções de recolha de lixo proposto pela Matchbox, é bastante apelativo. O molde é muito bom, muito robusto, bem proporcionado e detalhado—os eixos das rodas são quase indestrutíveis. Aos meus olhos, a postura é perfeita. A base em metal, sem pintura, prolonga-se para a frente e forma meticulosamente o distintivo rosto do camião. A aplicação da pintura é muito boa. No interior da cabina e como é frequente nesta altura, não existem detalhes. As rodas são robustas (mas susceptíveis a partir com determinados tipos de impacto) e em alguns exemplares rolam surpreendentemente bem. Em termos de valor lúdico, o módulo para recolha de lixo, bem detalhado e razoavelmente robusto, com elementos móveis a permitir a descarga do lixo, era muito apreciado pelos miúdos. É uma pena que este Refuse Truck só tenha permanecido quatro anos no catálogo da Matchbox, entre 1967 e 1970, no último ano já com rodas "Superfast". Felizmente, o seu moderno sucessor, introduzido em 1981, mais sofisticado e versátil, e ainda mais apelativo, representou bem este tipo de veículos, os camiões de recolha de lixo, durante mais de vinte anos. Notável. ●

¹ Despite my attempts, I still don't know what to call this element of the module. Some sources define it as a "hatch," a term that seems somewhat incomplete to me. Any help? ● Apesar das minhas tentativas, continuo sem saber que nome dar a este elemento do módulo. Algumas fontes definem-no como "escotilha", termo que me parece algo redutor. Alguma ajuda?
