Tomica – Isuzu Bonnet Bus
Scale model of a bus, the Isuzu Bonnet Bus, made by Tomica. This example is reference 6, included in the "Tomica Domestic" series. It is made in Japan, in the 1970s. Metal body painted in cream and blue ¹. Metal base, unpainted. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in red plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims (1H). With suspension. License plate "BUS". The nominal scale is 1:110 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.8 oz. This model represents a bus, possibly based on a 1956 Isuzu BX141 with Kitamura Seisakusho bodywork, equipped with the 5650 cm³, 110 hp (81 kW) Isuzu DA110 "L6" engine. From what I can gather from the documents and testimonies consulted, Isuzu BX buses with bonnets (hoods) were quite popular in Japan during the 1950s and 1960s. I believe this BX141 variant, with a length of about 27.3 ft, was used in urban services and could accommodate about fifty passengers.
As a kid, after seeing this bus in the toy store window, I didn't rest until I had it in my hands—it was love at first sight. In truth, accustomed to AEC Regals and Regents, I knew nothing like it—but the model, a replica of a popular Japanese bus, was literally irresistible. And I certainly wasn't the only kid to react that way—after this original version from 1976, so many others followed over the years that, I suspect, in 2026 the model is still occasionally requested for themed series. Deservedly so. The casting is of excellent quality—the proportions are harmonious (the "nose", so cute) and the stance is correct, and it shows all the main details, such as the intricate configuration of the windows, the ventilators, or the marker lights. The paint is somewhat thick, but it didn't affect the color separation in my example, which is almost perfect, especially at this scale and in the mid-seventies. The unpainted metal base is robust and adequately detailed. At the front, it extends to form the bumper and the lower part of the grille, and at the rear it projects to form the other bumper. The interior is reasonably detailed and even shows the peculiar combination of conventional and longitudinal seats. The excellent suspension and the wheels, well-molded and detailed and displaying perfect "chrome" after fifty years, offer impeccable "road handling". In this model, the play value essentially depended on the children's imagination and their ability to create interesting passenger services. As for me, I drove many miles in this little bus, taking care of it, keeping it clean and even having the axles properly lubricated, as befits things one loves. This is one of those cases where love at first sight became a lifelong passion. ●

Rodas em plástico com detalhes "cromados" a simular as jantes (1H). Com suspensão. Matrícula "BUS". A escala nominal é 1:110 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 77 mm. Cerca de 50 g. Este modelo representa um autocarro, possivelmente o Isuzu BX141 com carroçaria Kitamura Seisakusho de 1956, equipado com o motor Isuzu DA110 "L6" de 5650 cm³ e 110 hp (81 kW). Tanto quanto me consigo aperceber pelos documentos e testemunhos consultados, os autocarros Isuzu BX com capot foram bastante populares no Japão nos anos cinquenta e sessenta. Creio que esta variante BX141, com um comprimento de cerca de 8,30 m, era utilizada em serviços urbanos, podendo acomodar cerca de cinquenta passageiros.
Em miúdo, depois de ver este autocarro na montra da loja de brinquedos, não descansei enquanto não o tive nas minhas mãos—foi assim, amor à primeira vista. Em boa verdade, habituado aos AEC Regal e Regent, não conhecia nada de parecido—mas o modelo, réplica de um popular autocarro japonês, era literalmente irresistível. E não fui decerto o único miúdo a reagir assim—depois desta versão original, de 1976, sucederam-se tantas outras ao longo dos anos que, suspeito, em 2026 o modelo ainda deve ser ocasionalmente solicitado para séries temáticas. Merecidamente. O molde é de excelente qualidade—as proporções são harmoniosas (o "nariz", encantador) e a postura correcta, e mostra todos os detalhes principais, como a intricada configuração das janelas, os ventiladores ou as luzes de presença. A pintura é algo espessa, mas não afectou no meu exemplar a separação das cores, quase perfeita, sobretudo nesta escala e em meados dos anos setenta. A base em metal sem pintura é robusta e adequadamente detalhada. Na frente, prolonga-se para formar o pára-choques e a parte inferior da grelha, e atrás sobressai para formar o outro pára-choques. O interior é razoavelmente detalhado e mostra até a peculiar combinação de bancos convencionais e longitudinais. A suspensão excelente e as rodas, bem moldadas e detalhadas e exibindo "cromados" perfeitos ao fim de cinquenta anos, oferecem um "comportamento de estrada" irrepreensível. Neste modelo, o valor lúdico dependia essencialmente da imaginação dos miúdos e da sua capacidade para criarem interessantes serviços de passageiros. Quanto a mim, fiz muitos quilómetros ao volante deste pequeno autocarro, cuidando dele, mantendo-o limpo e até com os eixos devidamente oleados, como convém às coisas que se amam. Este é um dos casos em que o amor à primeira vista se tornou uma paixão para toda a vida. ●
