Matchbox – 8-Wheel Crane

Metal cab-platform assembly painted green; metal crane painted orange, hook in yellow plastic. Sub-base (under the cab) in metal, unpainted. Cab without glazing in the windows; no interior details. Black plastic wheels. No suspension. Crane with rotating motion; pivoting hook. The nominal scale is 1:114 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in (3.1 in, including crane projections). About 1.9 oz. This model represents a crane truck. Several sources mention that it is based on a Faun model, but it must be a rather obscure vehicle, as I can't find anything from the German manufacturer that resembles it, even considering the 8x4 Faun Typ L 1400 introduced in 1958, and equipped with a 175 hp (129 kW) Deutz engine.
As I mentioned in another post, in my childhood games, the need for a crane truck was very small. However, and perhaps due to my early interest in heavy vehicles, people tended to offer me all kinds of trucks: flatbed trucks, dump trucks, cement trucks, dumpers, and, naturally, crane trucks. That's how this curious 8-Wheel Crane, offered by Matchbox between 1966 and 1969 with regular wheels and in 1970 with "Superfast" wheels, ended up in my hands. The casting is of good quality, robust, well-proportioned, and detailed. The cab and platform are combined into a single element that also serves as a base (accommodating the rear axles) and where, on the platform, rests the well-detailed crane, displaying powerful (non-functional) hydraulic arms. An unpainted metal sub-base (under the cab) extends forward to form the bumper, grille, and headlights. The application of the green and orange paint is good and suitable for demanding outdoor play. The cab has no windows or interior details. The wheels are robust and roll properly. Like the Dodge Crane Truck from the same manufacturer, in terms of play value, the kids were entitled to a rotating crane with a pivoting hook, but without lifting capacity. As for me, what I appreciated most about this vehicle was its austere, robust, almost military air. In fact, at some point it was almost painted olive green and incorporated into my little army. But I'm glad I didn't. Apart from the natural wear and tear on the paint, it's good to continue seeing it as it came into my hands—more than fifty years ago. ●

Cabina sem vidros nas janelas; sem detalhes interiores. Rodas em plástico preto. Sem suspensão. Grua com movimento giratório; gancho pivotante. A escala nominal é 1:114 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 72 mm (78 mm, incluindo projecção da grua). Cerca de 53 g. Este modelo representa um camião-grua. Várias fontes mencionam que é baseado num modelo Faun, mas deve ser um veículo bastante obscuro, pois não consigo descobrir nada do fabricante alemão que se lhe assemelhe, mesmo considerando o Faun Typ L 1400 8x4 introduzido em 1958, equipado com um motor Deutz de 175 hp (129 kW).
Como referi noutra publicação, nas minhas brincadeiras de miúdo, a necessidade de um camião-grua era muito reduzida. Todavia, e talvez pelo meu precoce interesse em veículos pesados, as pessoas tinham tendência a oferecer-me todo o tipo de camiões: camiões plataforma, camiões basculantes, camiões de cimento, "dumpers" e, naturalmente, camiões-grua. Foi assim, que este curioso 8-Wheel Crane, proposto pela Matchbox entre 1966 em 1969 com rodas regulares e em 1970 com rodas "Superfast", veio parar às minhas mãos. O molde é de boa qualidade, robusto, bem proporcionado e detalhado. A cabina e a plataforma são combinadas num único elemento que serve também como base (acomodando os eixos traseiros) e onde, sobre a plataforma, assenta a grua, bem detalhada, exibindo poderosos braços hidráulicos (não funcionais). Uma sub-base em metal sem pintura (sob a cabina) prolonga-se para a frente para formar o pára-choques, a grelha e os faróis. A aplicação das pinturas verde e cor de laranja é boa e adequada às exigentes brincadeiras no exterior. A cabina não dispõe de vidros nas janelas, nem de detalhes interiores. As rodas são robustas e rolam adequadamente. Tal como no Dodge Crane Truck do mesmo fabricante, em termos de valor lúdico, os miúdos tinham direito à grua rotativa com um gancho pivotante, mas sem capacidade de elevação. Quanto a mim, o que mais apreciava neste veículo era o seu aspecto austero, robusto, quase militar. De facto, a dada altura quase foi pintado de verde-azeitona e incorporado no meu pequeno exército. Mas ainda bem que não o fiz. À parte os naturais danos na pintura, é bom continuar a vê-lo tal como chegou às minhas mãos—há mais de cinquenta anos. ●
