Matchbox – Dodge Dumper Truck

Metal cab-chassis assembly painted red; metal cargo box painted red. Sub-base (under the cab) in "chrome" plastic. Cab windows represented in transparent blue tinted plastic. No interior details in the cab. Black plastic wheels. No suspension. Tilting cargo box, capable of holding the unloading position. The nominal scale is 1:85 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.6 oz. This model represents a dump truck ¹. The cab-chassis assembly is based on that of the Dodge D truck, introduced in 1961.

Yes, I have to admit—this little truck didn't have an easy life in my hands. It hauled real dirt, rocks, and sand and bravely withstood it all. Offered by Matchbox between 1967 and 1969 with "regular" wheels and then, between 1970 and 1971, with "Superfast" wheels, this Dodge Dumper Truck was a very popular model among kids—for its determined look and functional dump bed. The casting is of good quality, reasonably proportioned and detailed. The cab for medium-tonnage "D" series trucks (D400/D500/D600/D700) shows the characteristic creases, curves, and the peculiar decorative "gills" on the hood—although its combination with this dump bed and a three-axle chassis has intrigued me for some years. Could it have been the circumstantial use of the Dodge Wreck Truck cab, duly refined with the grille and headlights molded in plastic? In this model, the cab and chassis are molded in a single element, which also serves as the base and accommodates the rear axles. The "chrome" plastic sub-base houses the front axle and extends forward to form the bumper, grille, and headlights. On my example, the paint was a little runny and thin in some areas, but without compromising its usual durability. The wheels are robust and roll acceptably, within their obvious limitations. In terms of play value, the kids really enjoyed the ample, functional cargo bed that could hold its unloading position. Unfortunately, these attributes ensured a hard life for these trucks, as well as, despite their robustness, a reduced survival rate in good condition. Perhaps miraculously, mine has survived to this day—showing signs of use, but perfectly operational and ready to return to work if needed. A fine tribute to the nearly indestructible full-size Dodge trucks. ●

Caixa de carga basculante, capaz de suster a posição de descarga. A escala nominal é 1:85 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 76 mm. Cerca de 45 g. Este modelo representa um camião basculante. O conjunto cabina-chassis baseia-se no do camião Dodge D, introduzido em 1961. 

Sim, tenho que o admitir—este pequeno camião não teve uma vida fácil nas minhas mãos. Carregou terra e pedras e areia verdadeiras e resistiu com valentia a tudo. Proposto pela Matchbox entre 1967 e 1969 com rodas "regulares" e depois, entre 1970 e 1971, com rodas "Superfast", este Dodge Dumper Truck era um modelo muito popular entre os miúdos—pelo seu aspecto determinado e pela caixa de carga funcional. O molde é de boa qualidade, razoavelmente proporcionado e detalhado. A cabina para camiões da série "D" de tonelagem média (D400/D500/D600/D700) mostra os característicos vincos e curvas e as peculiares "brânquias" decorativas no capot —ainda que me intrigue desde há alguns anos a sua combinação com esta caixa de carga e um chassis de três eixos. Terá sido o circunstancial aproveitamento da cabina do Dodge Wreck Truck, devidamente refinada com a grelha e faróis moldados em plástico? Neste modelo, a cabina e o chassis são moldados num só elemento, que serve também de base e acomoda os eixos traseiros. A sub-base em plástico "cromado" acomoda o eixo dianteiro e prolonga-se para a frente para formar o pára-choques, a grelha e os faróis. No meu exemplar, a pintura ficou um pouco escorrida e fina em algumas áreas, mas sem comprometer a habitual resistência. As rodas são robustas e rolam aceitavelmente, dentro das suas evidentes limitações. Em termos de valor lúdico, os miúdos gostavam bastante da caixa de carga ampla e funcional e capaz de manter a posição de descarga. Infelizmente, estes atributos garantiam uma vida dura para estes camiões, assim como, e apesar da sua robustez, uma reduzida taxa de sobrevivência em boas condições. Talvez milagrosamente, o meu chegou aos dias de hoje—com sinais de uso, mas perfeitamente operacional e pronto a voltar ao trabalho, se necessário. Um bom tributo aos quase indestrutíveis camiões Dodge de tamanho real. ●
