Hot Wheels – Peterbilt Tank Truck
Scale model of a tank truck, the Peterbilt Tank Truck, made by Hot Wheels. This example is reference 2800, included in the "1989 Workhorses" series. It is made in Malaysia in 1989. Metal cab, cargo platform, and chassis; cab and cargo platform painted yellow, chassis unpainted. Metal tank painted in metallic gray ("metalflake"), with printed details showing the inscription "SHELL" next to the famous clamshell logo. Cab windows represented in transparent black tinted plastic. Interior details in the cab in black plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims ("Black Walls"). No suspension. At the base of the tank, on both sides, two black plastic hoses can be pulled out, allowing the kids to simulate supplying fuel to gas stations. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:96 and the overall length is approximately 3.2 in (3.3 mm, including the projection of the hose tips). About 3.5 oz. This model represents a tank truck operated by Shell. The cab-chassis is presumably based on that of the Peterbilt 349, introduced in 1980 (but I might be wrong—I'll leave it to Peterbilt fans). The prototype that may have inspired this Hot Wheels model would possibly have had a Caterpillar, Cummins, or Detroit Diesel engine with a power output of around 300 hp (224 kW), and a 4000 gal steel tank with four compartments.
The first time I picked up this Peterbilt Tank Truck, I had no doubts. In the context of "3-inch" models, this was going to be the heaviest example in my collection—3.5 ounces! As for Peterbilt trucks, I don't remember ever seeing them in Portugal, but since I was a kid, any movie that featured a good dose of American trucks could count on me from beginning to end. I was therefore familiar with some of the products from White, Mack, Freightliner, Kenworth or Peterbilt. Offered by Hot Wheels between 1981 and 1994, this Peterbilt Tank Truck is a very attractive model. The casting is of good quality, reasonably proportioned and detailed, even if some details, such as air cleaners/breathers, exhaust pipes, horns and marker lights, are simplified in favor of robustness. For some unknown reason, the rearview mirrors are of different widths. Despite the oversized and peculiarly configured headlights, the front is reasonably detailed and literally indestructible, as is the massive tank—all in metal. The paint is well applied and resistant. Inside the cab, the details are limited to the black plastic molded seats, something that is barely noticeable due to the conveniently darkened windshield. The metal base includes representations of the fuel tanks, one on each side, and extends forward to form the bumper, headlights, and grille. The wheels are well-molded and finished and reasonably fulfill their function. In terms of play value, at the base of the tank, on both sides, two black plastic hoses can be pulled out, allowing the kids to simulate supplying fuel to gas stations. Typically American, very appealing with its yellow cab and metallic gray tank, displaying the popular "SHELL" brand, this Peterbilt Tank Truck is also a very robust model, surprisingly capable of running at high speeds on the orange Hot Wheels tracks and even beating some "muscle cars"! As for my particular example, born in the late eighties, I don't know its past, but since it arrived in my garage it has had a reasonably quiet life, far from any commotion, perhaps recalling the days when, driven along the carpet by tiny fingers, it filled the happy dreams of a child. ●

Na base da cisterna, dos dois lados, duas mangueiras em plástico preto podem ser puxadas, permitindo aos miúdos simular o fornecimento de combustível às estações de serviço. A escala nominal parece ser à volta de 1:96 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 82 mm (83 mm, incluindo a projecção da ponta das mangueiras). Cerca de 100 g. Este modelo representa um camião cisterna operado pela Shell. O conjunto cabina-chassis baseia-se presumivelmente no do camião Peterbilt 349, introduzido em 1980 (mas posso estar errado—dou palavra aos fãs da Peterbilt). O protótipo que pode ter inspirado este modelo Hot Wheels teria possivelmente um motor Caterpillar, Cummins ou Detroit Diesel com uma potência de cerca de 300 cv (224 kW) e um depósito de aço de 4000 gal (15142 l) com quatro compartimentos.
A primeira vez que peguei neste Peterbilt Tank Truck, não tive dúvidas. No contexto dos modelos de "3-polegadas", este iria ser o exemplar mais pesado na minha colecção—100 gramas! No que respeita aos camiões Peterbilt, não me lembro de alguma os ver em Portugal, mas, desde miúdo, qualquer filme que tivesse uma boa dose de camiões americanos podia contar comigo desde o primeiro ao último minuto. Estava pois familiarizado com alguns dos produtos White, Mack, Freightliner, Kenworth ou Peterbilt. Proposto pela Hot Wheels entre 1981 e 1994, este Peterbilt Tank Truck é um modelo muito apelativo. O molde é de boa qualidade, razoavelmente proporcionado e detalhado, mesmo que alguns detalhes, como os filtros de ar, os tubos de escape, as buzinas e as luzes de segurança, sejam simplificados a favor da robustez. Por alguma razão que desconheço, os retrovisores são de diferentes larguras. Apesar dos faróis sobredimensionados e peculiarmente configurados, a frente é razoavelmente detalhada e literalmente indestrutível, assim como a massiva cisterna—tudo em metal. A pintura é bem aplicada e resistente. No interior da cabina, os detalhes resumem-se aos assentos moldados em plástico preto, algo que mal se nota devido ao pára-brisas convenientemente escurecido. A base em metal inclui a representação dos tanques de combustível, um de cada lado, e prolonga-se para a frente para formar o pára-choques, os faróis e a grelha. As rodas são bem moldadas e acabadas e cumprem razoavelmente a sua função. Em termos de valor lúdico, na base da cisterna, dos dois lados, duas mangueiras em plástico preto podem ser puxadas, permitindo aos miúdos simular o fornecimento de combustível às estações de serviço. Tipicamente americano, muito apelativo com a cabina em amarelo e a cisterna em cinzento metalizado, exibindo a popular marca "SHELL, este Peterbilt Tank Truck é também um modelo muito robusto, surpreendentemente apto a rolar a alta velocidade nas pistas cor de laranja da Hot Wheels e a bater mesmo alguns "muscle cars"! Quanto ao meu exemplar, nascido no final dos anos oitenta, não lhe conheço o passado, mas desde que chegou à minha garagem tem tido uma vida razoavelmente tranquila, muito longe de qualquer agitação, talvez a recordar os dias em que, conduzido ao longo da carpete por dedos pequeninos, preencheu os sonhos felizes de uma criança. ●
