 Matchboxes | SNF – "Gallarda"

Released by Sociedade Nacional de Fósforos in 1970, the series – which I choose to call – "Gallarda", comprises 24 matchboxes (53x37x15 mm, 7–8 g) with polychromatic illustrations by Francisca Gallarda Garós, printed on glossy cardstock. As a note of interest, almost all of these illustrations can also be found in a series of postcards published in Spain by Eurocromo in the seventies. Given that I do not know the titles of the illustrations, those used in the following table are merely personal and preferably transitory choices. ● 

Lançada pela Sociedade Nacional de Fósforos em 1970, a série – que opto por designar de – "Gallarda", compreende 24 caixas de fósforos (53x37x15 mm, 7–8 g) com ilustrações policromáticas de Francisca Gallarda Garós, impressas sobre cartolina brilhante. Como nota de interesse, quase todas estas ilustrações podem igualmente encontrar-se em séries de postais editados em Espanha pela Eurocromo nos anos setenta. Dado que desconheço os títulos das ilustrações, os utilizados na tabela são meramente escolhas pessoais e preferencialmente transitórias. ●

Several of the illustrations shown on these matchboxes can also be found as covers of children's storybooks published in Spain in 1969–1970 by Eurocromo (in Portugal, by Publicações Europa-América)—thanks to this association it is possible to know the names of the characters shown in the illustrations. The names verified so far appear in parentheses. ● Várias das ilustrações mostradas nestas caixas de fósforos podem igualmente ser encontradas como capas de livrinhos de contos infantis publicados em Espanha em 1969–1970 pela Eurocromo (em Portugal, pela Publicações Europa-América)—graças a essa associação é possível conhecer o nome dos personagens mostrados nas ilustrações. Collecting matchboxes – the surprising world of Phillumeny.


Matchboxes | SNF – "Calhambeques"

Released by Sociedade Nacional de Fósforos presumably in the early sixties, the series – which, in ignorance of the official title, I choose to call – "Calhambeques", comprises 15 matchbooks (50x42x7 mm, ? g) with polychromatic illustrations by F. J. (?), printed on semi-gloss cardboard. On the cover, the illustrations represent, in a somewhat stylized way, pioneering motor vehicles from the Victorian and Edwardian periods. On the back cover, we have the vehicle brand below and above, inside a red square, the date of manufacture. As a note of interest, there is a later, identical series, with 25 matchbooks and, naturally, with ten more illustrations. In this larger collection, the square on the back cover is red. ●

Lançada pela Sociedade Nacional de Fósforos presumivelmente no início dos anos sessenta, a série – que, no desconhecimento do titulo oficial, opto por designar de – "Calhambeques", compreende 15 caixas de fósforos (50x42x7 mm, ? g) com ilustrações policromáticas de F. J. (?), impressas sobre cartolina semi-brilhante. Na capa, as ilustrações representam de forma algo estilizada veículos automóveis pioneiros, dos períodos Vitoriano e Eduardiano. Na contracapa, temos em baixo a marca do veículo e acima, dentro de um quadrado vermelho, a data de fabrico. Como nota de interesse, existe uma série posterior, idêntica, com 25 carteiras de fósforos e, naturalmente, com mais dez ilustrações. Nesta colecção maior, o quadrado na contracapa é vermelho.  ●

As we can see, the style of the illustrations is somewhat stylized, but charming, and it would be interesting to know a little more about their author, who signs as "F.J." – any help? As for the chosen theme, it is from my point of view an invitation to research this fascinating period in the history of the automobile, from the last years of the nineteenth century to the eve of the first great war of the twentieth century. In the image, some examples of the series of 15 matchbooks, easily identified by the green square on the back cover. ●

Como podemos apreciar, o traço das ilustrações é algo estilizado, mas encantador, e seria interessante saber algo mais sobre o seu autor, que assina "F.J." – alguma ajuda? Quanto ao tema escolhido, é do meu ponto de vista um convite à pesquisa deste fascinante período na história do automóvel, dos últimos anos do século dezanove a vésperas da primeira grande guerra do século vinte. Na imagem, alguns exemplares da série de 15 carteiras de fósforos, facilmente identificada pelo quadrado verde na contracapa. ●

In this image, we see on our left a matchbook from the series with the green square on the back cover – all the others are from the series with the red square. Fifteen of the illustrations are shared by both series, but with different numbers. ● 

Nesta imagem, vemos à nossa esquerda uma carteira de fósforos da série com o quadrado verde na contracapa – todas as demais são da série com o quadrado vermelho. Quinze das ilustrações são partilhadas por ambas as séries, mas com números diferentes. ●

Matchboxes | Fosforeira Portuguesa –  "Aviões de Combate"

Released by Fosforeira Portuguesa (Espinho), presumably in 1976, the series – which, in ignorance of the official title, I choose to call – "Aviões de Combate", comprises 24 matchbooks (50x42x7 mm, 6 g) with polychromatic illustrations by unknown author/s, printed on semi-gloss cardstock. On the cover, the illustrations represent, in a fairly accurate way, contemporary fighter aircraft from various countries. On the back cover, we find a brief description of the aircraft and three basic technical details – wingspan, length and speed. Also shown, the name and flag of the country in which the aircraft operates and the corresponding Air Force insignia. ●

Lançada pela Fosforeira Portuguesa (Espinho), presumivelmente em 1976, a série – que, no desconhecimento do título oficial, opto por designar de – "Aviões de Combate", é constituída por 24 carteiras de fósforos (50x42x7 mm, 6 g) com ilustrações policromáticas de autor(es) desconhecido(s), impressas em cartolina semi-brilhante. Na capa, as ilustrações representam, de forma bastante fiel, aviões de caça contemporâneos de vários países. Na contracapa, encontramos uma breve descrição da aeronave e três pormenores técnicos básicos – envergadura, comprimento e velocidade. São ainda apresentados o nome e a bandeira do país em que a aeronave opera e a insígnia da Força Aérea correspondente. ●

As we can see, the style of the illustrations is fairly accurate and dynamic. It would be interesting to know the authorship – any help? The theme must have been quite appealing to both kids and adults and provides an interesting overview of contemporary fighter aircraft. ●

Como podemos ver, o estilo das ilustrações é bastante preciso e dinâmico. Seria interessante saber a autoria – alguém me pode ajudar? O tema deve ter sido bastante apelativo tanto para miúdos como para adultos e oferece uma visão geral interessante dos aviões de combate contemporâneos. ●

On the back cover of the matchbooks we find a brief description of the aircraft and three basic technical details – wingspan, length and speed. The technical data appear to be correct, but several descriptions are certainly misattributed. Among other examples, the suggestion of MiG-21 fighters operating in the UK or BAC Lightning in the USSR seems ambitious.●

Na contracapa das carteiras de fósforos, encontramos uma breve descrição da aeronave e três pormenores técnicos básicos – envergadura, comprimento e velocidade. Os dados técnicos aparentam estar correctos, mas várias descrições estão decerto mal atribuidas. Entre outros exemplos, a sugestão de caças Mig-21 a operar no Reino Unido ou BAC Lightning na URSS parece ambiciosa. ●

Portuguese toy. An iron that my mother played with in the mid-1930s. Heated with embers, it actually allowed her to iron the dolls' clothes, usually made by my grandmother. ●

Brinquedo português. Ferro de engomar brincado pela minha Mãe em meados dos anos trinta. Aquecido em brasas, permitia de facto passar a ferro as roupinhas das bonecas, normalmente confecionadas pela minha Avó. ●

Model Trains | Paulo Santos – Locotractor

Model trains. Billard-inspired locotractor, body made of plastic (styrene), Roco chassis, 1:87 scale, H0e system. The "inspiration" stems from the need, at the time, without access to Tenshodo or Caramel chassis, to adapt the dimensions to what was providentially available: Roco, Fleischmann, or Ibertren. Unfortunately, lack of time and inclination have kept more than a dozen of these charming creations unfinished. ●

Comboios em miniatura. Locotractor de inspiração Billard, carroçaria criada em plástico (estireno), chassis Roco, escala 1:87, sistema H0e. A "inspiração" resulta da necessidade de, na altura, sem acesso a chassis Tenshodo ou Caramel, ter adaptado as dimensões ao que providencialmente existia na gaveta: Roco, Fleischmann, ou Ibertren. Infelizmente, a falta de tempo e disposição têm mantido por concluir mais de uma dezena destas encantadoras criaturas. ●
