Perfect Engineering

«After crossing the Sado River aboard the "Garça Branca", the opportunity arises to explore the natural landscape. First, my eyes discover the beautiful mouth of the river as seen from the Troia Peninsula. Above all, I am looking for the Large Psammodromus gecko – but I know that this time of day is not the best time to find it. Instead I find a splendid grasshopper, whose species I cannot identify. For a moment, it tolerates my proximity and allows me to appreciate and record in detail its astonishing morphology. Perfect engineering.» ●

«Depois de atravessar o Rio Sado a bordo do "Garça Branca", surge a oportunidade para explorar a paisagem natural. Primeiro, os meus olhos descobrem a bela foz do rio vista a partir da Península de Tróia. Mas logo, coisas mais pequenas despertam a minha atenção. Sobretudo, procuro a lagartixa Large Psammodromus – mas sei que esta altura do dia não é a melhor para a encontrar. Em vez dela, encontro um esplêndido gafanhoto, cuja espécie não consigo identificar. Por instantes, tolera a minha proximidade e permite-me apreciar e registar detalhadamente a sua espantosa morfologia. Engenharia perfeita.» ●

Marshland

«Pedras d'el Rei is a tourist resort located near Tavira, on the Algarve coast. A 1 ft 11 5⁄8 gauge railway line runs for approximately 0.6 mile through the Ria Formosa marshland and provides easy access between the tourist resort and Praia do Barril, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. In these two images, the characteristic landscape along the line.» ●

Uma linha ferroviária com bitola de 600 mm percorre cerca de 1 km através do sapal da Ria Formosa e permite a fácil ligação entre a estância turisitica e a Praia do Barril, banhada pelo Oceano Atlântico. Nestas duas imagens, a característica paisagem ao longo da linha.» ●

Mimicry

«Mimicry is, in short, the ability of a living being to visually adapt to the environment in which it lives, or even to another living being. Something we can also understand as natural camouflage. One of the best known examples in Portugal is the chameleon. In the marine environment, plaice and octopus can remain almost invisible to predators and prey, and among insects the diversity, complexity and near perfection of mimicry is literally astonishing. Certain praying mantises are nearly invisible through twigs and leaves, and grasshoppers seem, depending on the species, to adapt to any setting – sand, rocks, leaves and logs. In this image, just a slight movement revealed the presence of the grasshopper (I don't know the species), confirmed at a short distance. Remarkable.» ●

«O mimetismo é, em poucas palavras, a capacidade de um ser vivo adaptar-se visualmente ao meio onde habita, ou mesmo a outro ser vivo. Algo que também podemos entender como uma camuflagem natural. Um dos exemplos mais conhecidos em Portugal é o do camaleão. No meio marinho, a solha e o polvo conseguem ficar quase invisíveis a predadores e presas, e entre os insectos a diversidade, complexidade e quase perfeição de mimetismos é literalmente espantosa. Certos louva-a-deus são quase invisíveis por entre ramos e folhas, e os gafanhotos parecem, consoante a espécie, adaptar-se a qualquer cenário – areias, rochas, folhas e troncos. Nesta imagem, apenas um ligeiro movimento revelou a presença do gafanhoto (desconheço a espécie), confirmada a curta distância. Notável.» ●

On the Rocks

«As I wrote recently, regarding mimicry, grasshoppers seem, depending on the species, to adapt to any scenario – sand, rocks, leaves and tree trunks. In this image, an example. In the distance, what I assume to be an Oedipoda caerulescens, is barely visible on the rocks. Just a slight movement reveals its presence.» ●

«Tal como escrevi há pouco tempo, a propósito de mimetismos, os gafanhotos parecem, consoante a espécie, adaptar-se a qualquer cenário – areias, rochas, folhas e troncos. Nesta imagem, um exemplo. À distância, o que presumo ser um Oedipoda caerulescens, é quase invisível sobre as rochas. Apenas um ligeiro movimento revela a sua presença.» ●

I see you!

«After hours of photographing miniature vehicles, small things (that – normally – don’t move), it’s interesting to photograph small things (that move – fast and a lot!). Birds, reptiles and insects are a challenge. You need to know their habits – and their rhythms, predict their movement. Sometimes they cooperate, but it is rare. Usually they give us 3, 4 seconds. But the result is rewarding and allows for so many stories to be told. Like here, where this alert dragonfly, upon detecting the approach of a human, seems to "think" – I see you!»  ●

«Depois de horas a fotografar veículos em miniatura, coisas pequenas (que – normalmente – não se mexem), é interessante fotografar coisas pequenas (que se mexem – depressa e muito!). Pássaros, répteis e insectos são um desafio. É preciso conhecer-lhes os hábitos – e os compassos, prever-lhes o movimento. Por vezes, cooperam, mas é raro. Normalmente, dão-nos 3, 4 segundos. Mas o resultado é gratificante e dá para contar tantas histórias. Como aqui, onde esta atenta libélula, ao detectar a aproximação de um humano, parece "pensar" – 'Tou-te a ver!» ●

Astonishing Beauty

Sand Creatures

«As is customary in my wanderings, I'm always on the lookout for small creatures, for the nearly invisible local inhabitants. Here, my gaze met the gaze of a sand creature, poised for a moment on the Transpraia trackbed. Further on, another astonishing creature, nearly invisible on the sand. In both cases I would like to know which species – any entomologists around here?» ●

«Como é hábito nas minhas perambulações, estou sempre atento às pequenas criaturas, aos habitantes locais quase invisíveis. Aqui, o meu olhar cruzou-se com o olhar de uma criatura das areias parada por instantes sobre o leito de via do Transpraia. Mais adiante, outra espantosa criatura, quase invisível sobre a areia. Em ambos os casos gostaria de saber qual a espécie – algum entomólogo por aqui?» ●

Ghosts

«In August 2023, above, we see the northern terminus of the Transpraia in Costa de Caparica, now devoid of tracks and turntable. Below, the southern terminus in Fonte da Telha, almost hidden under the sand. Are there ghosts in the dunes?» ●

«Em Agosto de 2023, vemos acima o término norte do Transpraia na Costa de Caparica, já desprovido de carris e placa inversora. Abaixo, o término sul na Fonte da Telha, quase desaparecido sob a areia. Será que existem fantasmas nas dunas?» ●
