Yatming – Ford Thunderbird


Scale model of an automobile, the Ford Thunderbird, made by Yatming. This example is reference 1008, included in the "Fastwheel" series. It is made in Hong Kong, possibly in the 1980s. Metal body painted in brown. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic. Interior details in white plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:76 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in (72 mm). About 0.8 oz (23 g). This model, the Ford Thunderbird, represents the 1972 Ford Thunderbird, possibly equipped with the 7.5 L (7530 cm³), 167 kW (227 hp) 385 V8 engine. Top speed would exceed 120 mph (193 km/h). 

On the 1:1 scale, the 1972 Ford Thunderbird has a strong presence. Its length of 214 inches (5,44 m) and a curb weight of more than 4800 pounds (2177 kg) when equipped with the 385 V8 460 engine, confirm this. For a model that was born small, a two-seater convertible in 1955, in response to the Chevrolet Corvette, the increase in size and weight until the seventies is surprising and this 1972 Ford Thunderbird is very close to the huge top-of-the-range Lincoln Continental Mark IV. On the presumed scale of 1:76, however, Yatming offers us a "cookie" with about 23 grams. The lines and proportions are not far from the truth, as are some details, and the color itself evokes one of the manufacturer's options. But the general effect falls short of reality, still penalized by a cartoonish stance, common in fact to other contemporary Yatming models . Finally, some components are poorly aligned and the transparent plastic came fogged up. But, as I usually say, never mind, these imperfections are part of its charm. This automobile, the Ford Thunderbird, is in my collection under the theme "American Vehicles". ●

Para um modelo que nasceu pequeno, um descapotável de dois lugares em 1955, em resposta ao Chevrolet Corvette, o aumento de tamanho e de peso até aos anos setenta é surpreendente e este Ford Thunderbird de 1972 pouco se distancia do enorme topo de gama, o Lincoln Continental Mark IV. Na presumível escala de 1:76, todavia, a Yatming oferece-nos um "biscoitinho" com cerca de 23 gramas. As linhas e as proporções não andam longe da verdade, assim como alguns detalhes, e a própria cor evoca umas das opções do fabricante. Mas o efeito geral fica aquém da realidade, penalizado ainda por uma postura caricatural, comum aliás a outros modelos contemporâneos da Yatming. Por fim, alguns componentes estão mal alinhados e o plástico transparente veio embaciado. Mas, como costumo dizer, não importa, estas imperfeições fazem parte do seu encanto. Este automóvel, o Ford Thunderbird, encontra-se na minha colecção sob os temas "Veículos Americanos". ●

This series of 16 miniatures appears in 1970 associated with the Rajá ice cream brand, which offers a figurine on each ice cream purchased. Monochrome plastic, various colors. Obstacles In editorial terms, 2023 was a year without surprises for the " FUTURE MEMORY | TRANSPORTATION " and " FUTURE MEMORY | TOYS & MODELS " websites. But it is increasingly clear that one life is not enough to share my entire photographic collection.
