Matchbox – Bedford 7½ Ton Tipper

Scale model of a dump truck ¹, the Bedford 7½ Ton Tipper, made by Matchbox. This example is reference 3, included in the "1–75" series. It is made in England in 1961. Metal cab and chassis painted in grey, metal cargo bed painted in maroon. Cab with metal base painted in black. No glazing. No interior details. Plastic wheels (RW). No suspension. Tilting cargo bed opens tailgate. The nominal scale is 1:85 and the overall length is approximately 2.6 in. About 1.2 oz. This model represents a dump truck based on the 1960 Bedford TK. 

As a kid, in the seventies, I see many Ford Ds, with their distinctive white grilles, driving along our roads. As well as the peculiar Morris FGs, the chubby Hanomag Kuriers or the perky OM Cerbiattos. I also see a lot of Bedford TJs and TKs. Of the latter, I don't know how many units were produced, but in Portugal they sold well. They are seen everywhere, in the most diverse functions. However, I don't remember them with tipping cargo boxes, more associated with various Mercedes-Benz, Scania-Vabis MAN or Volvo models. But certainly, particularly in the UK, some versions of the Bedford TK would carry various bulk cargoes such as dirt, sand or gravel. The Bedford 7½ Ton Tipper, made by Matchbox, is in its fundamental traits well proportioned and detailed and even comes equipped with dual rear wheels. The functional cargo box ensures long hours of play transporting sand brought in from the beach or dirt discreetly removed from the planters. The paint is of good quality and durable. But, above all, after so many years, what I still love about this miniature is its elegant simplicity. It certainly lacks the windows and interior details in the cab – but nothing that a fertile imagination can't solve. This dump truck, the Bedford 7½ Ton Tipper, is in my collection under the themes "British Vehicles" and "Trucks". ●

Modelo à escala de um camião basculante, o Bedford 7½ Ton Tipper, feito pela Matchbox. Este exemplar é a referência 3, incluída na série "1–75". É feito em Inglaterra em 1961. Cabina e chassis em metal pintados em cinzento, caixa de carga em metal pintada em "maroon" ². Cabina com base em metal pintada em preto. Sem vidros.Sem detalhes interiores. Rodas em plástico (RW). Sem suspensão. Caixa de carga basculante abre o taipal à retaguarda. A escala nominal é 1:85 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 65 mm. Cerca de 34 g. Este modelo representa um camião basculante, possivelmente baseado no Bedford TK de 1960. 

Em miúdo, nos anos setenta, vejo muitos Ford D, com as suas distintivas grelhas brancas, a circular pelas nossas estradas. Assim como os peculiares Morris FG, os redondinhos Hanomag Kurier ou os espevitados OM Cerbiatto. Vejo também muitos Bedford TJ e TK. Deste último, não sei quantas unidades foram produzidas, mas em Portugal venderam-se bem. Vêem-se por todo o lado, nas mais diversas funções. Contudo, não me lembro deles com caixas de carga basculantes, mais associadas a diversos modelos Mercedes-Benz, Scania-Vabis MAN ou Volvo. Mas decerto que, sobretudo no Reino Unido, algumas versões do Bedford TK transportariam diversas cargas a granel, como terra, areia ou gravilha. O Bedford 7½ Ton Tipper, feito pela Matchbox, é nos seus traços fundamentais bem proporcionado e detalhado e vem mesmo equipado com rodado duplo traseiro. A caixa de carga funcional assegura longas horas de brincadeira a transportar areia trazida da praia ou terra discretamente subtraída às floreiras. A pintura é de boa qualidade e resistente. Mas, sobretudo, ao fim de tantos anos, o que ainda me encanta nesta miniatura é a sua elegante simplicidade. Decerto que lhe faltam os vidros e os detalhes interiores na cabina – mas nada que uma fértil imaginação não resolva. Este camião basculante, o Bedford 7½ Ton Tipper, encontra-se na minha colecção sob os temas "Veículos Britânicos" e "Camionetas & Camiões". ●
